Not how I taught rundowns. Get the ball out of the glove so the other fielder can see the ball. Create a throwing lane. The issue with that rundown is the play was at 3rd. They needed to throw to 3rd earlier and then run the runner back towards 2nd. Worse case the runner is safe and runners are on 1st and 2nd.

You hit it on the head. 100% agree. Rundown 101. @jay My comment was in reference to the poster saying Nico should of caught the ball and sprinted at the runner. That is 100 percent wrong. The play has to happen at 2nd. Nico needed to get the ball out of the glove. Get the runner moving and feed the 3rd basemen. The 3rd basemen is the one who is going to run the runner back to 2nd. Nico got the ball out correctly. Nico’s throw was late though. That was the only mistake on that run down. That should never happen at this level. I would be upset with a 10u team for making that mistake. With youth teams we ended every practice with rundowns. 2 lines between 3rd and home. We were not the team to get caught in a run down against.

First of all, NO TEAM can sustain 'winning ways' playing like amateurs as the Cubs have all season long, and the runner wasn't just safe, he was safe STANDING UP! My first move is to fire the Manager. This team has no concept of winning, or playing fundamentally sound baseball and THAT"S exactly what has lost them the most games this year. The unforced errors(regardless of how they're scored), consistently throwing the ball away or even into the stands. Leading the universe in hitting into dbl plays and LOB. This team is an embarrassment to the word 'professional'.

You got to feel bad for Counsel having to deal with this crap. He had an easy job in Milwaukee, low pressure, with an organization that can build success. He called the "Cubs" job a dream job. How is your dream going Counsel? Thanks for all the amazing memories you gave us in Milwaukee. 2018 NLCS series, and taking the Dodgers to game 7. So close to the World Series. Now the continued memories of watching the Cubs stinking up the joint. The Cubs seldom are able to build success year after year. If he wanted out of Milwaukee so badly, he might have been better off going to the Cardinals, they are at least a winning organization.

Two things, both about Nico. I don't think he was loafing on the rundown. Maybe not sprinting, but he was putting in the effort. His problem was he held the ball too long. And the missed pop-up to center wasn't a routine play, especially for the second baseman. And chances are if he was under the ball there would have been a brutal collision with the sliding center fielder.

But jeez it's a bit distressing to see all these more or less good players playing like there's no point in trying. While I totally back Steele, one of the few people who actually has bankable talent here, it sucks that he had to do that. Manager should be doing it, fans should be doing it, front office, but not teammate on teammate. Morel's lack of effort ... sit him. Two games at least. And it's amazing that Little and Neris together did not give up any runs. Statistically it had to happen sometime. Crazy that Counsell put them both in but what choice does he really have. Anyway, they know what it's like to do their job properly ... hope it rubs in.

No…. Steele has to be thinking I am pitching on a little league team. Professionals that cannot even execute defensive fundamentals. Nico has to come off the bag for that throw on the stolen base and Swanson has to be there to back it up. Morel should have stayed covering 3rd as Nico ran him towards 3rd waiting for a throw on the rundown to put on a tag - Morel was totally out of position. Communication was non existent on that pop up to shallow center. The passed ball was due to sheer laziness. The Cubs are just mailing it in at this point. The few exceptions are the starting pitchers, Happ and Busch.

I may be a Brewers fan, but I know and understand the Cubs fans frustration. The ironic part, when the season ended last year I was not thrilled with the Brewers front office moves. Then when Craig Counsell left, it really seemed like our team was going flat. We traded a Cy-Young winning pitcher, we dumped off one of the best closing pitchers in the middle of a pennant race? WTH!?!?! Our managerial choice was a little puzzling as well. Then the new season started, and I honestly thought the Brewers wouldn't even win 60-65 games all year. With Craig Counsell I again honestly figured the Cubs would win the division. I mean no disrespect at all. These two teams have had one of the best rivalries in Baseball. Usually with the Cubs overtaking Miller Park, oops, American Family Field. My point is that anything can happen. Sometimes your team makes decisions that can p*ss you off to no end. It might take time. Hell, the Brewers have still only seen one World Series(1982), and we lost. I don't know what happened to Counsell? Maybe he was more lucky than good?

I agree that this inning seemed slow and sluggish…im a brewers fan so it makes it easy to say. Some of these plays seem more or less due to the lack of communication or practice in certain areas of the game. Ex. In the rundown it looks like they just are slightly uncomfortable in the scenario, the left fielder has to come in towards third, because Nido has to stay at the plate in case of a potential play at home. Is this partly on Counsell and the coaching staff? I think yes.

Dansby Heyward is quickly becoming my least favorite Cub. Can't back-up the steal attempt, nowhere to be found on the rundown, and on the pop to short CF he literally redefines the term, "lack of hustle." Either his wallet is too heavy or his new bride is actually a Succubus who's draining him of vital fluids.

If Nico backs off when PCA calls that, PCA catches that ball. Nico simply wasn't listening. You can tell in the footage that when Pete begins his slide to catch the ball, he sees Nico in his peripherals and instinctually leans away to try to dodge getting smacked in the face which pulls him just that fraction of an inch from the ball. And Swanson shouldn't have been there at all, his presence only added further confusion and he was never catching that ball. He needed to be paying attention, seeing that two teammates are both going for the ball, and getting out of there to let them communicate the play to each other. It is getting really really frustrating watching Swanson lazily saunter around the field game after game not hustling, not communicating and not playing good fundamental baseball. If these players aren't going to hustle and earn their MILLIONS of dollars, someone needs to get traded or sent down as an example.

YES !!! Finally someone gets that PCA (centerfielder) was the captain of the outfield and has right to call for every ball as needed. Nico went after it and either ignored PCA or didnt hear him...either way, Nico, needs to be aware of other players out there especially center fielder... Nico definitely caused PCA to miss that catch and almost caused a nasty collision out there

Again no disrespect intended at all, but what happened this season? I really thought Counsell would be a great fit in Chicago. One thing I noticed when he(Counsell) was in Milwaukee was that our team batting average was low, something extremely low. Little to no run support either. Pitching was usually at the top or close to the top but hitting sucked. Again I really thought Counsell would have worked?

Don't get too cocky. I am and have been a Brewers fan my entire life, but just because we won a couple of series doesn't mean that we're now the National League Champions. Yeah beating a division rival is great. And yes I remember when the Cubs were kicking our @$$e$, Miller Park would have more Cubs fans than Brewers fans. But there's still another 75-80 games left and the Cardinals, Pirates, Reds, and Cubs could still make a run. This has been an insane season. The Brewers lost their closer(Josh Hader), a Cy-Young winning pitcher (Corbin Burnes), a number of other players, and a manager that fans used to love. Add to that a insane number of injuries the Brewers have still been winning. However just remember winning streaks can also become losing streaks, and that SUCKS!
