Why is there so much hatred directed to these Soviet planes? Compare them to similar western aircraft of the same era and technology wise, they are similar. These planes were simply designed for a different market with different needs along with different piloting and cultural traditions. Lets just all appreciate the diversity of aviation and calm the hatred

+Alejandro Tsang I was thinking exactly the same thing. They're still flying decades later. I bought this program just to see the old designs and how they operated & appreciate the willingness of the producers to record them for what is now a bygone era. Cubana no longer flies the IL-62 leaving only a tiny handful of carriers that do.

+Alejandro Tsang Best comment so far. Fantastic to see these videos of 60s & 70s designs kept flying. What choice did Cuba have in the circumstances? The tiller as steering wheel makes a lot of sense. The Russian & Ukrainian designs were very practical and tough. Still love a TU-154M engine noise

i love russkies flew with them several times, pilots are superior to any western one. No shit, most of them are ex airforce dudes and it shows, just look how they perfomig at air shows. Simply astonishing.

Because Most of them are either stolen from Western or European counterparts or just plain ugly, along with the fact that their manufacturing quality is questionable, just like everything else manufactured in Russia. When everyone gets paid the same there's no incentive to produce quality products. Soviet aircraft fly on very sketchy shoestring operations. That's why people hate them. Antonov is probably one of the only Soviet (obviously not Soviet now) aircraft manufacturers I trust, only because they're forced to keep their company reputable because of them having the largest plane in the world and all

I flew on the IL-62M in 1987 from Warsaw, Poland to Montreal, Canada, it was a 9 hour flight and the captain let me sit in the cockpit for 4 hours of the flight. At that time i was 11 years old but i remember it like it was yesterday. The only thing i hated was the noise because i was sitting in the tail section right beside the engines. The plane i flew on crashed three weeks later while coming back for an emergency landing after it's engine exploded damaging the 3 out of 4 engines and cutting the lines for the control surfaces of the rudder and elevator, the only thing that worked was the trim tab for the elevator which gave the pilots some pitch control, unfortunately there was a fire in the tail, and just six miles from the runway it melted the plastic around the trim control cable leaving the pilots with zero control at which time it crashed. Exactly the IL62 is a mythic plane and loved by all lovers of the world aviation and you maybe never knew but they flew inhospitable and cruel routes that no plane even with GPS + fly TODAY 2017 remember that they assigned these routes to be Of the SOCIALIST block and they came and went to the degree that they never lost nigun il62 at sea in nigun ocean of the world but that such 707 AD-727 and are of the same litter were built only 166 il62 for all the intercontinental airlines of the block SOCIALIST imagines the history of flight the other accidents was by bad maintenance of the airline that flew them and the CUBANA by negligence of the captain of flight and take off with bad weather winds he was to blame (havana)

They're huge because they are still controlled by wires and cables and the pilot also has to be strong. Even the tiller is huge.

The IL-62 is truly beautiful aircraft. It's too bad that Cubana has now retired them from passenger service and perhaps, all service now even. When I was last in Cuba, in Feb 2012, I did see a couple of IL-62 on the ground at Jose Marti, that were in long-term storage mode. Later, I saw two more IL-62's flying over Havana. Perhaps a few are being used for cargo service, or perhaps they were merely on a ferry flight to a storage facility. Regardless, the IL-62 is a truly beautiful airliner.

That is just fantastic. Not too often do you get a stem to stern in & out overview of a classic "whistler" Ilyushin IL-62M That cockpit layount with the turquoise blue scheme reminds me a little of a 1950's/1960's Powerwagon dashboard

I have always wondered what the idea behind the big and small yokes was? I find it interesting that the yoke comes out of the panel, not the floor. Oh I see, it is a tiller....cool.

Although there's all sorts of old Russian jets still out there, bought by airlines that can't afford anything newer. With these planes, you have to be able to read the subtle nuances and pay attention to all 3,000 gauges in front of you. Flying was hard work back in the day. Which leads me to the point that these pilots, although from poorer nations, gain valuable experience rapidly because of this difficulty.

That is one badl*ss plane, even down to the sound of those engines. The service on that flight looks better than some of the US airlines.
