Cuba SUCKS, I'm Leaving. (why it's the worst country i've ever visited) 🇨🇺
🌎 TRINIDAD, CUBA (1.9)
This video tells a story, so make a hot drink, turn your phone horizontal and get comfortable. Come with me as I explore Trinidad and chat to the locals about life on the island to find out what Cubans are protesting about? What's it like to live on the island? What basic amenities are available to the population? What's Cuba like? and more. #FREECUBA
I start off buying a sombrero from a couple that have never left Trinidad and explain their difficulties in buying materials for their business. I then head to the local store to show the limited stock they have and how it's impossible for locals to buy anything because the stores don't accept the national currency. Ridiculous I know. After drinking a Cancanchara we get a bicycle taxi to the housing projects where tourists don't go to show a different side to Trinidad. We ascend a roof through a tiny hole and get shown photos of La Trova when the island was a popular tourist destination.

I am Cuban, Santiago invited you to the best place in Trinidad. I have visited that place a lot, when I lived in Cuba and after I left. Without a doubt, La Trova is the best place, but it seems that there are no tourists in the country. It is better that you do not return until the dictatorship falls or there is a transition. What I do know is that if they don't hand over power, the people will execute them. So, it's going to be a civil war.

You said 20,000 pesos for your hat. That's about 700 euros not 20. Is that correct or did you say the wrong cost ?
@luissmith8559
Жыл бұрын
@@sammayhew1064 The hat in Cuba costs 10 dollars, if he gave 20 they cheated him. When he visited Cuba, 10 dollars was 1,700 Cuban pesos on the black market. The Cuban state exchanges your dollars at 120 Cuban pesos for one dollar, but the state does not sell dollars. So that creates inflation so much inflation every day that today it is 300 Cuban pesos for one dollar on the black market. Which means that 10 dollars today are 3,000 Cuban pesos. Of course, the state is always going to pay you the dollar at a much lower price than the black market. So tourists take dollars in cash and exchange it on the black market for Cuban pesos, because it is much more profitable.

@Luis smith i was there 6 months ago it certainly wasn't that much. He must have been ripped off. When I was in Havana. I went into a coffee shop with my friends. They immediately turn off the Wi-Fi. After saying they had free Wi-Fi to lure us into place. Also told us they accepted visa. Which was not true. The bill came to about $20. Then they said we could not leave until we had spent $15 more. $$$$ is all they want. The exchange rate was about 340 cup in £10 on my visit.

Trinidad is my most favorite city in Cuba. I am; however, very glad that you covered some of the truth about the country. Most tourists never leave the resort or tourist areas, which is sad in my opinion. I'm also glad you went to the rooftop. Trinidad is a rooftop town. It's absolutely beautiful. If one ever goes to Trinidad you must go for a hike in the mountains! Don't miss out on it. I've been to areas of Cuba where people are living in train containers and homes build on dirt with scrap metal and wood. It's safe to say that not all Cubans live equally when it concerns quality of life. When many KZreadrs cover Havana I sometimes have to write within the comment section that Havana is not Cuba. Unfortunately, many tourists never see the truth. When you go to Cuba, if you're a tourists, remember that you are there like someone who is rich that visits your country. See what you have access to, as someone who is rich in comparison, and then take the time to think how hard life is for the average Cuban citizen. That Cuban dude who gave them both a coffee, that's like you buying 2 Starbucks coffees for a complete stranger you just met. For people who have so little, they are very generous!

Over populated, over consumed, massively polluted parts of the world should not allow the struggling inhabitants to keep breeding like flies and add to the burden and competition for survival. Do not create life when yours is extremely poverty stricken. Never mind you can spread out and run to richer countries and put more strain on us. Also, there are some touristy restaurants, but I never went there because i wanted a Cuban experience to see what it's like to live on the island. FREE CUBA!

This is so sad, I travelled to this country 5 years ago and stayed in the heart of Havana with the locals. Had the best time of my life! Yes, the supermarkets were dyer, and Yes we had to go to the central squares/gardens to connect to the internet but my god it's the least of your worries, with streets filled with music, fresh delicious fruits every morning, incredible parties and if you do your research beforehand the restaurant options were phenomenal. Like I mean top-tier delicious food (and I’m a privileged girl from London). The soul of Havana has stayed in my heart ever since, and I've longed to come back and visit Trinidad specifically. Saddened to know that the country running low on water and the devastation of its economy. Such a shame the people there are Amazing!

Thank you Dan for this video from Trinidad. I was there around 2017 and it was definitely lively, but I visited within only the tourist colonial area that was quite charming. I'm glad to see the are where locals truly live with those soviet era style block buildings, no care for aesthetics or quality of life there! You ask why people are paid in national currency but must pay in foreign currency at the supermarket. The supermarket you visited is not for the average citizen, only for foreigners or cubans who receive dollars or euros from relatives who have emigrated and send monthly support for their family back home to be able to buy food. The government needs foreign currency, which is why you are not able to buy food at those markets without bringing in dollars or euros. Obviously, this causes a large divide in nutrition between those who get economic support from family abroad and those who do not have such support available.

I had wanted to visit Cuba for years but lived in other Latin countries instead. I finally visited in 2017 and was so disappointed. Havana was great. I'm a mixed brown skin guy so could easily blend in and get lost in Havana, seeing the real cuba, the good and the bad. But since I didn't rent a car, when I left the city I was forced to take the tourist bus, and then you're on the tourist trail. We'd stop somewhere on for a break and immediately a salsa band would start playing and then demand money. Felt like the whole country had been told to divert to catering to tourists and selling cuban culture. If they knew you were a tourist, they were basically always trying to sell you something. I found the people cool in a distant kind of way, they were educated and fairly worldly, despite having mostly been confined to this small island. But this also meant they were way more cold and less friendly than other Latin Americans, I guess the result of decades of the gov reprimanding them if they fraternised with foreigners. Despite speaking Spanish I found it hard to pierce this divide and get into cuban social circles. People were generally interesting, talkative, engaging, but there always remained that sort of distance. The food in the casas particulares was great, but in restaurants it was terrible. There were a couple new hipstery type restaurants in Havana that had good produce but were also ridiculously expensive. So yeah, very mixed feelings about the place. Cubans told me I'd be amazed by santiago de cuba, that it's so clean and has beautiful buildings. I almost felt bad when I realised that they thought this simply because it was marginally cleaner than anywhere else and had a couple of new-ish two story buildings and an ok looking church. Really made me realise that their perceptions are warped by having never seen anything more impressive in person

I’m from Sancti-Spíritus and this video brought me so many memories I made there with my mom who occasionally worked in Trinidad. Saddened to see how bad things are. Nothing ever changes for the better. On a positive note, thank you for making a thorough video. You’re very well informed.

I visited cuba in June 2022, i stayed at Sol palmeras in varadero, And i was in total shock to learn the hardships the cubans live through in Day to Day life... i had done 0% research on the country before going on Holiday there. I can Quite honestly, the cubans i sat with and spoke with, touched my soul, they are so wholesome and polite, smile so much even though they're treated like slaves... i am going back in June 2023 but this time, i am going to take simple supplies to help them out. I visited a super market at the Las americanaz, Plaza and it was just empty, very shocking to a brit who is used to seeing, Asda, Tesco, morrisons ect ect with everything i could ever imagine at my finger tips, Yet in Cuba you see Locals stood with a little Rations book 🤦♂️🤦♂️ !! I understand your frustrations about your way of travelling through cuba because Quite clearly all the food, watwr ect is prioritised for the Hotels, so i could never Go from town to town like yourself, so i take my hat off to you. Great Video though, Thank You for sharing. 😊😊 La viva Cuba 💪💪💪💪

Hey buddy, good to hear from another Brit that travelled there recently. I'm the same, I did 0% research before I went and I was in shock. When I make videos on my channel I always get off the beaten track and interact with the locals to see how people really live. Watch my video where i Meet Elio in the mountains of Vinales. he told me when he harvests his crops from the field, he has to sell it to the government and then they sell it to the local businesses. A country of slaves. FRE CUBA! Feel free to comment your opinions of my other videos, i also have some from other countries. Peace mate :)

I visited Havana, also in June 2022. My biggest regret is that I didn't bring along a care package with basic supplies such as apririn, coffee, cookies, and other snacks for the nice lady at my hostel. I wish that it were easier to mail care packages to Cuba. As far as I know, there's only a shipping company out of Miami that delivers to the island (I live in Houston, and don't think that there's any service from here). I wanted to ship a package from Mexico, but was told that there's no delivery service between the two countries.....
Thanks for showing the deep Cuba, it is the first time that I see your videos. It is real that we the cubans are very open with foreing people, as you could see in person, we are a noble society and we aren't much more because for decades the regime didn't allow conctact between locals and tourist, used to be a criminal matter. I could talk more but your material it is very explicit for feeling the sadness. I only have one complain, dude, to buy pictures os fidel castro and che guevara!? Please it's too much.

Does she regret her decision? I visited Havana last year, and cannot imagine anyone actually wanting to move there??? I've never seen such urban and social decay in my life (and yes, I've visited communist countries in my youth), and it's an absolutely wretched existence for most people there. There was an elderly lady at my hostel who may well have supported Fidel Castro when he came to power, but all enthusiasm for the revolution had long since evaporated and she had no hope for her country.....

Trinidad was once a magical town. My first visit there in 2011 was enchanting 🎉 My last visit in 2018 I could see the downward changes. Most of my local friends there have married Americans or Canadians to flee. Those who are left behind are suffering immensely 😢 I have never been to Chancancara when there wasn't live music. The music in Trinidad has also died. My heart breaks.

Cuban music is so good, must have been nice listening to them live at a local bar. The economical situation at Cuba isn't the best right now, some countries got hit hard cause of the pandemic, so we can't really blame them for their unfortunate twist of faith. But its still good to see the local people coping up with their misery and trying to survive whist being kind to tourists. Papa Santiago still wants to party like he did in his youth, that man was so happy to see you show up at the bar. Also, you never introduced us with your friend.. Is this the end of Cuban episodes or are there more to come?

Seeing the live music in the bar at Trinidad was a perfect way to end the trip mate. Santiago made me laugh when he said 'lots of girls' and did a little dance. There were no girls there, just old men. 1 more cuban video but next it's time for the videos from Mexico!!

Well done, Dan. You caught the heartbreak of the place, its isolated subsistent economy in this one-time beauty spot, AND the fortitude of the people who have been very badly served by their revolution. Trinidad is a world heritage site, and the centre is quite beautiful but like the rest of Cuba, if you travel outside the tourist centre to where the Cubans live, the local life becomes visible as an impoverished thing, a battle for survival that ordinary Cubans call 'la lucha' the struggle. Unless you're a scuba diver, a musician or a sex-tourist, there's little to interest ordinary people in this island which has recently been name 'the most economically miserable country' on the planet. In the center square near the Cathedral, there is dancing and music int he open air every night after the heat of the day departs. You dance and meet strangers under the canopy of. a Caribbean sky full of stars.. Aguadiente, incidentally, is the cheapest form of rum, the kind cuban workers drink. It is made off-license and is cheaper than Havana Club. Casa de Trova is a world famous spot for trova, (although not as famous as the bar of the same name in Santiago): well worth a visit.
