Cuba embargo: Why does the US continue to reject UN moves to end it? • FRANCE 24 English

Now 60 years old, the trade embargo on Cuba has been perpetuated primarily at the behest of Washington. When it was imposed in 1962, John F. Kennedy was US president and Fidel Castro was the revolutionary leader of Cuba: a Communist too close for comfort for Washington at the height of the Cold War. Arms sales to Havana had been banned four years earlier and Cuba leant on its major ally, the Soviet Union, to fill the gap. Our panel discusses why the embargo remains in place today and if there is any hope of lifting it.

The reason for maintaining the embargo is personal. The United States considers Cuba to be within its sphere of influence, and Cuba dared to defy the wishes of the American government and align itself with the Soviet Union, and has continued to defy it for decades. Not that different from the Russian government's attitude toward Ukraine.

As an American, I feel it is high time to end the embargo altogether. A lot of the cause of the embargo is that American companies lost their holdings in Cuba with nationalization by the Castro regime. However, many of those companies were abusive of Cubans and bled Cuban resources. Finally, it is time to let this be and move ahead into an era of better relations. Americans have a right to travel freely. It is high time to end restrictions on American travel to Cuba or Americans should simply ignore such restrictions.

"A lot of the cause of the embargo is that American companies lost their holdings in Cuba with nationalization by the Castro regime" You really believe it was only American companies that lost? ALL and I do MEAN ALL companies, Foreign and even Cuban owned businesses and properties were seized "STOLEN"..! As an American... How would you feel if the government seized your Grandfathers farm? Your Mom's Hair Salon? Your own House? Took away your right to Free Speech? Please stop being so naive in thinking that the Embargo is the root of all evil. Cuba imports about 90% of all its chicken from the U.S. It's the Cuban government which stifles the Cuban people. American companies were abusive and bled Cuban resources..? What about Spain or the USSR? You think they "Helped" Cuba out of the goodness of their hearts? BTW, if you're truly American... you will not like traveling to Cuba. Their 5 Star resorts are more like 2 Stars. They people are nice and welcoming, but I'm sure you're not accustomed to regular blackouts or food shortages or sketchy transportation... I went into a Hotel in Havana (The Capital) while sightseeing with my sister, she needed to use the restroom... She shouted "Hey there's no toilet paper", I replied "Well there's no toilet in here..!" Yeah, I'm sure you will never forget your trip to Cuba..!

There can be no uprising if the people HAVE to spend most of their time for just surviving! LIFT the embargo so they can strengthen their society and THEN they will have the will, time and power to change their situation. The embargo is a gross violation of Cuban human rights by the US. How much or little USA took of oil income in Venezuela has nothing to do with stealing at all. You really need to read up on what stealing means. Oil companies, no matter what country they come from, make deals with the countries they are going to start searching and drilling for oil in. That doesn't matter if the company is from Britain, Norway, USA or another country. This "stealing as you call it, have been done by companies and not by the country USA. And that is a huge difference from what the Cuba regime did to their citizens. If a country are not tough enough when it comes to making those deals with the oil companies, they can very well get a small share of the oil profit. This has happened all over the world. It is totally natural that the oil companies take a large share of the oil profit as they are the ones taking the huge risks of searching for oil and they are the ones investing all the money in the oil drilling and transportation infrastructure as well. The countries having the oil, are taking no risks at all. I am guessing from your name that you are Norwegian and if I am correct about that, I suggest you read up on the start of the oil adventure in your own country. And Norway was by far one of, if not the toughest countries in negotiations with oil companies from Britain and USA.

Yeah it's pretty hypocritical.. but unfortunately in international relations a lot of countries behave in this manner. The United States knows that China is an economic powerhouse and simply must interact with it in the economic and political realm if it wants to maintain its own international prowess. However, Cuba has a tiny influence on the world relative to China (not saying this to disparage Cuba; it's regionally an important country) and domestic political concerns take precedence over the benefits that could come to Cubans of the embargo was lifted. It is an incredibly silly policy, but unfortunately it seems that it's deeply entrenched in the bureaucracy of American foreign policy.

Thousand of children are dying every day all over the world because of war, starvation, illnesses and more. Lots of children die every day because of lack of medicine. Even in USA are children dying because they don't get the medicine they need. And that is how it is all over the world. Including France.

And then pretend it to be some sort of unbiased discussion. I am not saying that this embargo is right or wrong, but clearly France 24 have their own view about it and that was very easy to see in how they made up this panel to "discuss" it. This was very far from being a debate. This program was clearly made to make people have the same opinion about the embargo as France 24 have.

People don't talk about WHY the embargo began!! If Castro NATIONALIZED many Industries that were in Cuba at that time, that is, if CASTRO has stolen ASSETS and the production of many Companies, and THERE WERE no FAIR INDEMNITIES, is logical to conlude that the EMBARGO was/is fair... CASTRO, by this action, repelled many companies that became afraid of building up new industries in Cuba... The stagnation began!! Not because of the embargo... although Castro (and every communist in the world) blame the embargo for the Cuban crises. Castro made himself a DICTATOR and was not able to attract new investments for Cuba... As other Socialist regimes, the ECONOMY was destroyed. But they have money to buy weapons... 3% of their GDP...This kind of regime must be discouraged by EVERYBODY... USA is doing its part since then... The embargo was not the coause of The Cuban Crisis, it was a consequence of Castro dictatorship... Why some people love dictators but don't accept the logical consequences of their acts??

So Cuba has to make a large enough purchase with their limited funds for the company and freight shipper to weigh the consequences of a transaction with Cuba which is why commerce is limited with the outside world. You try to sound clever with a simple retort that is partially factual and ignores the reality.

The embargo should continue until Cuba return the value of properties that were taken away from the original owners. And until Cuba government stop imprisonment of young/kids for protesting the abusive Cuban laws against their own people.

Return the land of the original owners. You know that the Cubans in the US (Republicans) are all of light skin color European descendants that would abuse dark skin colored Afro Latino Cubans. They ate the rich and the US couldn’t have none of it.

What embargo? There is none. What Cuba complains is credit, they want us government to give them credit. The real embargo is from the government to its population

Cuba actually buys food and medicines from USA. Which has slowly declined because they chose not to continue to purchase since they want to buy it with credit. But No country wants to give Cuba credit, they never pay their debt! That is the truth of the matter!
