This right-of-way travels southward into Brooklyn and is known as the former LIRR Bay Ridge Branch which dead ends in Bay Ridge at the old Ship Yards. There are a few abandoned stations along the route as this used to be a passenger route until the mid 1930's. Plans to make a connection across NY Bay to Jersey City for thru freight service have been off & on for decades due to construction costs - there is evidence of tunnel approaches in Bay Ridge that are covered up but remain if the project ever gets a budget. It would be a great idea and great for the Tri-State area as far as moving goods thru the metropolitan area via rail.

This portion of the RoW is the former Freemont Branch of the New York Connecting Railroad (New Haven, then Penn Central, then Conrail, Now the Freemont Secondary of CSX) . This is the line that runs from OAK Tower at Oak Point Yard (The Bronx) and ends at Freshpond Junction (Freemont Tower). The Bay Ridge Branch of the LIRR starts at Freshpond Junction and ends in Bay Ridge.

Great work John! As this line will be incorporated into my dream layout (flying a modern-day New York Central flag)... it's great to keep up with the latest traffic on the line through your videos. As you know, I live in Denver (for now)... but will return one day.

I hope that wasn't the police coming over for you when you hear the sirens coming at the end I once took a walk on Tri Borough Bridge near Astoria Park and was able to look accross to see the NY&A freight train heading up towards the Hell Gate bridge. It was great. Unfortunately I didn't have a camera with me.

Two tracks only for 1/3 of a mile or so. Second track was installed to facilitate construction of the current BQE lane configuration. When the work was done, they left the track in place. If they build the Cross Harbor rail tunnel, it might haul rail traffic. Depends upon who's study you believe.

Since this comment, the second track has been extended south into a long passing track, and now goes just past Queens Boulevard

I have a question. First of all why are there two tracks at this location? Second of all, if the proposed cross harbor rail tunnel would be built will it carry more rail traffic?

Awesome video! That train must of been a mile long. First time I've seen the wood trains too. Where was that location?
