Crysis Remastered PC Review: Beautiful Tech, Brutally Limited Performance

Ойындар

Join Alex Battaglia for the definitive tech review of Crysis Remastered on PC - a game that elevates and modernises much of the original game's technology, but at a cost of poor performance on today's CPUs... and some legacy tech debt from Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 that we really shouldn't see on a PC game.

It just blows my mind that they thought reworking a stripped-down console port was the correct way to approach a remaster of a game whose reputation is built on being a PC technical showcase. Did they just think that people wouldn't notice all the missing effects? What a joke.

  • @GrandmasterofWin

    @GrandmasterofWin

    3 жыл бұрын

They didn't think this was the best approach. They know better. They did it this way because the PC version of Crysis was too different from the console versions already, so it would have been an entire separate remaster process to do the pc version right. Much cheaper to start at the same foundation for all ports/"remasters". Also, most cross-platform developers try to release an almost identical product across all platforms, I think, to appease Sony and Microsoft. Obviously the PC version could be leagues ahead of the consoles, but for Crytek "passable" is good enough. They probably just hoped no one would notice, or maybe they knew they would get called out, so they released it on Epic to scrape every dollar they could and not have to deal with the open criticism from steam reviews. Absolute corporate trash.

@DigitalFoundry and audience, I was able to speak with one of the higher ups at. Crytek about this remaster. The remaster was to be planed to be the showcase for the Cryengine 6, but because numerous delays, events, mishaps etc. it couldn't be and the management decided mainly because of financial aspects to only do a remaster of the original console version, the paned PC version was canceled, but luckily (?) forced by many original developers. The source did not say how. Unfortunately during the development of the remastered the dev team changed two times and it was partly done by Crytek Istanbul and outsourced, which is the main reason for the differences of the quality and design aspects and why for example the in-game cutscenes in the remastered look so boring in comparison. What was planed for the PC version and in perticular the "Can it run Crysis" settings was canceled too, other projects which are far more important (financially) caused this. So what it is now is basically cheating, they simply used high res shadows, textures etc., increased the number of grass and such, used only one lod preset, add more rays for the software raytracing and some other minor modifications. Planed was a similar thing as showcased in the UE5 tech demo for the PS5 just leveled up for PC, also things like an actual learned ai controlling the npcs, a realistic behaving weather simulation focused heavily on the wind and rain effects, which would have had massive effects on the foliage and other things, software and hardware raytracing combined and much more. So once against Crytek's questionable management ruined something.

    1. The remaster team was console-centric in every way imaginable and did not reference the original PC game adequately, then Crytek's in-house remaster "repair" team didn't have enough time to go back and (comprehensively) tweak Saber's shortcomings, piece by piece. 2. That 2006-2008 Crytek dev team was comprised of some of the industry's absolute top technical talent, a real all star group of uncompromising programmers and engineers, and many of them have since moved on to other developers like Ubisoft, id, and Monolith. 3. Some of the shortcomings we see here are almost embarrassing, in terms of simply missing what made the original shine in those scenarios. Indicative of not enough 'legacy' team members remaining with a clear memory and respect for the minutiae of the PC original.

Crytek's Engine is a masterpiece. I know many hate Crysis 2 and Crysis 3, But to me all of the trilogy including Warhead are not just one of the but the finest of all PC FPS games to date, They were in loss when the first game came only on PC and pushed the goddamned HW to hell. Then EA got the rights and funded them but to push it on Console trash as well, the Crytek team did that and it was a failure of loss in all technological advancements from sandbox of the game to the art, setting of the plot etc. Crysis 3 addressed it to major extent by making the game again with lush foliage and other beautiful art pieces. Past that also they failed, EA funded that Crysis 3 as well, that was old EA anyways. The studio went bankrupt sadly and after Ryse and that C3 only a few AAA games made it, Homefront Revolution and Prey both still look fantastic than many games. The magic of that Cry Engine during those times is something remarkable. That era is gone now, it's all political dogshit in games and MTX with console BR crowd appeasement.

I don't buy the whole "we didn't like that level" excuse. They just remastered the console version, as it already on a newer version on CryEngine. It being a port of the console version would explain why the character model look so poor. Just a port of a port.

Agreed. There was nothing wrong with the level aside from its performance issues. It controlled well, was relatively short, and served as a fun little diversion/rollercoaster ride leading up to the finale on the aircraft carrier. For them to completely rip it out, rather than _at least_ try and improve on it (since they claim to despise it) is telling. That's just one of many reasons why this "remaster" is both horrendously disappointing and a complete disservice to the original game.

*"Seriously though, I'm puzzled why they made so many compromises in a remaster of a game that is known for bringing PCs to their knees."* Why are you puzzled? We've known since Crysis 2 that Cevat Yerli is a greedy, dishonest genius. Crysis was both a critical AND financial success, surpassing expectations, and--last time I checked several years ago--selling 7M copies ON PC. But he was butt-hurt that he only got large profits and not ultra-large COD profits, so he wrongly blamed piracy and swore off PC gaming in order to make deliberately mediocre console games. His company paid dearly for his greed. He went from success that any dev would envy to excreting telephone games. You might think that a person would realize his mistake....would see that CDPR flat out proved you wrong about piracy....and maybe set a precedent by becoming the first AAA PC developer since the Great Consolization of 2008. But not Cevat Yerli. Nope...After all, he insisted that Crysis 3 was the best Crysis yet.

I'm disappointed by the remaster honestly. Like you Alex, I fell in love with Crysis back in 2007 and it launched a lifetime of interest in hardware, performance, and rendering techniques. The most disappointing thing to me is the lack of volumetrics, which was a HUGE deal back in 2007. SVOGI makes some great improvements to the overall look of a scene, but the implementation is messy. I often find light bleed or weird flickering indoors when standing in certain places and I found it's a screen space effect. The destruction was dumbed down, the sound is constantly glitching, random AI soldiers without weapons spawn in for some reason, the HDR doesn't work right, plants aren't as interactive, the new weapon menu is terrible, and the performance is in no way stable. Why on Earth would you use the xbox 360/PS3 port as a starting point? They had to dumb down and remove soooooooooo many features to get it to even run on those consoles. Anyway, enough complaining, let me contribute something useful. I'm running on an RTX2080 and i7-9700K with 32GB RAM. With this setup, I can easily stay above 60fps in 1440p on all high (RT Off). 4k is not practical with this setup. Ray Tracing in this game adds very little to any scenes, while costing 10% of your performance. I just turned it off since SVOGI isn't dependent on that option. I also found that if I have a browser open with Netflix or something on in the background, it can cause stuttering. Something I haven't seen in other games.

No one ever blamed consoles for CryEngine 2 and Crysis/Warhead not being multithreaded. It has nothing to do with consoles. Talk about a Straw Man. *"Crysis also NEVER used the Nvidia G80 Cuda Cores or Compute Stream Processors nor the Compute Units of AMD Radeon HD GPUs."* What are you _talking_ about? It seems like you're implying that Crysis doesn't take full advantage of GPUs _either,_ which is flat-out nonsense. The first time I ever played Crysis was on my brother's NVIDIA 8500 GT, a miserably weak _low-end_ card. I had zero problems, and loved every second. Several months later I built my first gaming PC with a GTX 260, and fully maxed out the game less than a year after release. Did I get 60 fps? Of _course_ not. 60 fps didn't become an expected standard until after the Great Consolization of 2008, when GPUs kept getting faster, but we kept getting the same 360 ports year after year. If I had been willing to run low settings I _could_ have done 60 fps, but I wanted to run on Ultra. Crysis is an extremely customizable experience with a vast difference in performance between lowest and highest settings. Try the same thing with the typical console port of today, and you'll hardly see any difference in performance between lowest and highest settings.

I don't understand why they made the water worse than the 2007 original, or even worse than Crysis 2 and 3 on PC. It may have better shading, but it's flat. Crysis 2007 used something called FFT (fast fourier transform), where they could easily (and quickly) create "animated" noise-channels for height-maps and normal-maps once or at runtime, allowing the water to have natural looking waves both in 3d (geometry being displaced) and 2d (normal-maps creating more details on the water). In Crysis 2 and 3 they kept some of this but added in a dynamic element to the water surface. Now the player can create ripples in the water by shooting it, stepping/swimming in it, or by throwing stuff into the water. All this while having the 3d waves from the "animated" noise-channels from the FFT and 3d ripples from the interaction by the player, etc. But in Crysis Remastered all that is gone. Why? I can only speculate as to why, but I have a hunch it's gone because of the roots for the version they have "remastered". It's essentially the 2011 console release of Crysis on Xbox 360 and PS3. There the water had to be simplified to it's flat and 2d nature seen in that release. While the interaction with the water is still present, the 3d waves are gone. This was a console specific optimization applied to all Crysis releases, both 2 and 3 also had flat water on consoles. Heck even PC had flat water in Crysis 2 until they patched DX11 support into the game finally. It's not that the latest Cryengine doesn't support the water seen previously on PC, it's just something they either forgot or didn't have time to turn on. Hopefully it's something modders can enable, or something that can be enabled with a simple console setting.

FrenchMercenary it’s a trick developers use to save memory bandwidth in a game by having very low polygon objects/textures in the distance instead of using the fully detailed asset. When you walk toward these low polygon LODs, the engine will “call in” the higher quality asset, and when handled well the player won’t even notice it happening. “Can it run crysis” mode eliminates LODs, meaning objects and scenery in the distance retain all of the texture quality/shadow quality they would as if you were standing right next to them. Personally I think it’s neat, but it’s an easy way to cripple any game on any system.

At a guess, the full original animation from the PC couldn't fit into the Xbox 360 RAM so they just dropped it completely when they did the console port. Honestly there are so many things that just look straight up worse in the remastered or feel downgraded. The whole colour grading is completely off and overdone just look at the island shot the greens and blues look horrible like Far Cry 1, vegetation physics/interactions aren't nearly as good, indirect lighting is often completely broken, volumetric lights either missing or broken, tesselation looks worse than in Crysis 3 and certrain textures just float above the tesselation, no volumetric cloud i mean come on it was one of the most defining features of Crysis and it even removes gameplay features and content. In some cases the PS3 and 360 version even has better looking lighting and volumetrics. The remastered is basicly just an excuse to release it on all consoles again. All they had to do is just try to implement proper multicore and multi threading support to the original. I wish the whole "can it run crysis?" meme was never a thing because 99% of people don't even know why it runs so badly, the fact that the developers even embrace it is even worse while still having bad multi core support. If you have a good PC just buy the original Crysis and it will look better even without mods.

Yes - this really is a 4K video, but once again, KZread's encoders are running slowly. Watch now for the information, but to see this video at its best, check back later for full 4K resolution and improved 1080p60 image quality.

You guys should know by now that the solution to this is to upload, then leave the video unlisted while KZread processes the video. Then make public approx 2 hours later.

I feel y'all, but every week we have this happen and someone gives you the solution. DO NOT release the video before it is done processing in 4k.. I'm still not sure why you guy's have an issue when others don't ie LTT, MKBHD even someone like greg salazar. I dunno, sort it out mates 🤘🤗

@@MysteryD This is just me assuming, but I think they would rather just put the video out quicker because they know a large amount of their audience cares about the information more than what resolution the video is in. They probably also assume that we are capable of making the decision to come back later if 4k resolution is that big of a deal.

It boggles the mind to think about how much _easy_ profit Yerli could have made if he simply took Crysis and CryEngine 2.0 (the last PC engine Crytek made), re-coded it to be as multi-threaded as possible, added any algorithmic optimizations from the last 10+ years, and then enhanced the crud out of it--physics, AI, and visuals. The game is already _made._ It wouldn't have taken him more than $2M USD _max_ and a year or less to do it, and it's nonsense to think he wouldn't have sold a bare minimum of 500K copies at $40 USD each. Even at that bare minimum, assuming an average gross of $20 per copy, that's $8M gross profit on $10M in revenue. I have my boxed copy of Crysis sitting right here, and I'd be glad to pay for a solid, honest *PC product* like that, and to also show the industry that there is a market for AAA-level PC games.

So they based this off on the console version of the game rather then the PC one, cut content out by removing the ascension mission, worsened certain designs like the aliens and the nano suit, and released the game in a poorly optimized state. No wonder crytek is aways having money problems. How can they expect to win over clients with this?

@Keelan That's a myth. Tesselated water was shown only in wireframe mode. If you weren't in wireframe, it wasn't rendering, hence not incurring any performance cost.

Everyone should download the Crysis Enhanced mod for the original game on ModDB. Better than Cryteks garbage remaster for PC. The mod adds 4K/8K textures, retains the original colorgrading and time of day settings while adding TAA and a bunch of other visual improvements.

what annoyed me the most about the remaster was when youre in max strength mode you grenade throws are the same in armor mode. In OG crysis it would go so much further with less of an arc. It was a lot of fun to use it tactically
