Cry Plays: Soma [P1]

Ойындар

Game : store.steampowered.com/app/282140/
Oh boy. Time for a throwback.
My channel truly began proper Let's Plays with Amnesia. That's where it all began, and Frictional Games has finally released its next proper game. Not A Chinese Room with Machine for Pigs, but Frictional Games themselves. And I gotta get in on this action.
We goin' back to our roots boys.
You all ready for a hoot and a holler?
I promise, no Michael Jackson this time.
Les go.
(And for those asking about Asura's Wrath, it's going up at the usual 12pm EST, so don't worry. Will be doing both playthroughs at once. c: )

+Aliicide It said that the person who caused the accident was a mother who was distracted with her kids in the car, and rammed into the protagonist's car. Bad enough, but it also says that the mother claimed that it was an "unavoidable" accident and tried to claim innocence.

Nice to know that you're going back to your roots for once. You've come so far Cry, from almost 10 years ago, back when you just finished High School, to now where you're a full-time KZreadr/Streamer. Your audience has grown from a few people to dozens, to thousands, and even millions. I remember back in the day when I first saw you play corpse party, to staying up and watching late night back in 2012/13. Things have changed so much since then and this video makes all of that nostalgia come back. Never stop doing you Cry, never stop. 'Til the next time.

+Late Night with Cry and Russ V2 Thought I'd chime in here as well. Sad to say, I wasn't around during Cry's big Amensia phase, but I do understand the impact that had to everyone and how this game in particular brings back those memories. Corpse Party was THE first series I watched from Cry back in 2012 and what made me subscribe to his channel. I remember when The Walking Dead Season 1 Ep. 1 was released when you were still playing Corpse Party. The comment section was absolutely nuts with the whole "Where's Corpse Party?!/The Walking Dead?!". I'm sure that was a dreadful time, but that kind of thing just sticks with you, you know? The weekly streams, man, I remember Skype calls with viewers, game/t-shirt giveaways, and pizza hour. Those were great times. Just wanted to say, thank you Cry, and everyone one else in the Late Night Crew for being the chillest people to play video games just because, well, you all like video games, and who doesn't? Enough talking, time to actually watch this video, hah.

Hearing cry sing the "get low" song reminded me of a story from back when I was in the Air Force jrotc. It was during our annual military ball and I was one of the cadets that was djing. My friend and I saw that song on our tech sergeant's laptop and decided it would be hilarious to play it. Does anyone here know what it's like to have several active duty officers from the Air Force and a retired general stare at you as over 100 cadets start screaming "to the windooowww. to the wall. to the sweat drips down my balls"? Well let me tell you that it isn't a fun feeling.

This has got me thinking to back when you had around 40k subscribers and why I started watching you in the first place. I often don't watch your videos the second they come out--I save them for a time when my life is a wreck. They honestly help me get through so much. I can get scared with you, and laugh with you, and be sad with you, and I don't have to think about anything else. A lot of things in my life have been shit lately. A lot of things I care about are ending, going away, and even dying. You're kind of the one thing right now that just hasn't changed, and that means so much to me. Thank you, Cry. Heh, I just realized your profile picture is still the same as it was a few years back.

Hey, I know how you feel. I haven't experienced death in my life but I have come close with both my parents before, and now other things are looming around the corner due to their age. At 15 that can be hard to handle, but I just enjoy the time I have. Life is always a big wreck. A clusterfuck of wtf is this and other things alike. It can be hard knowing the fleetingness and futility of it all but, then again, just the fact that it exists can make someone cry tears of joy. I gues what I'm trying to say is, it'll get better, but in those hard moments, remember that you're still here. Remember that the things you care about, who are still here with you, may go away soon or forever from now. Appreciate the past or present existence of everything. It helps. It helped me through the shitstorm of last christmas (my dad was that tough old bastard and he didn't go to the doctor's after contracting pneumonia, until he was just about ready to die) and the shitstorm of my fifth grade year. (mom had cancer)

So is the "SOMA" title a reference to Brave New World? I would think it is, given the sci fi theme, and the Phillip K Dick quote, given that Brave New World was a huge influence to PKD's work. If this is the case, that's actually a damn cool reference.

Nah. "Soma" appears as an item in SMT games as well :P Soma was a drink iiin I think Hindu processions. There was a text or hymn or smth that claimed it granted divinity or immortality or something like that. Well, if you wanna know more about it I'm sure you can find more reliable information out there. I'm sure the title of this game was picked carefully.

  • @TheChocoXCheese

+spiritmint Soma has multiple meanings and origins. It's a word in the English language borrowed from Greek that means "body". It's used in science to refer to parts of an organism that aren't reproductive cells, or as a distinction from the soul or mind. In Hinduism it is a kind of drink of the gods. And I think the drug in Brave New World was based on that. From everything I've seen so far in the game, all of those meanings seem to have at least a little significance to the plot.

Just to comment on the insurance/this game is set in Canada thing. I'm a Canadian (I live in Toronto) with major health issues and I have had multiple brain scans in the past. This is not even remotely how this process is done FYI. The scans are covered by our universal healthcare and are done typically in hospitals where the machinery is new and the environment is extremely clean/well maintained. Doctors don't run the scans, trained technicians do and doctors view the scan afterwards and only contact you if there is something wrong. A single resident would never be running this setup. He is clearly being tricked into something/things are very sketchy and atypical. If he had private insurance the place would be even nicer than the hospital environment. Point is, the whole setup is really messed up. (Also our subways are much, much cleaner than shown lol). They got a lot of other details right which is why I'm pointing out how messed up the 'healthcare' situation looks.

+Taylor M. Collette I agree completely, but I also work with the youth of today. It's depressing how often kids tell me a 'fact', and when I ask where it came from they cite some comment from a random on the internet then hold stubbornly to the notion it is 100% factual. I remember when I used to think that a kid doing the same but citing it as being from Wikipedia was laughable. Nowadays I'm depressingly happy that Wikipedia as the source is at least possibly correct. I had one kid cite a vine once *headdesk*. It's a weird era to live in; I think we've both never been so smart and simultaneously stupid as we are in current times.

I took this as a voluntary study he's participating in, based on the emails. It seems like Simon's doctor recommended the study and he agreed to participate. Often medical/psychology students perform their own studies and experiments when preparing for their thesis. This is often done in things like sleep studies, but some are more extreme (for example, the Stanford Prison Experiment). I went to a counselor once who was still working on her doctorate but was getting experience with real patients. It's a fairly common thing and completely voluntary, has nothing to do with insurance. It's how doctors, therapists, scientists, etc., complete their certifications. I'm surprised more people didn't pick up on this, unless there's something glaringly obvious that I missed which debunks that. (I'm aware this is 2 years late, but I'm leaving this in case any newcomers are also confused)

Never watched any of these vids before. Strange voice Cryaotic has - it's the horror movie voice of the charming, kind new boyfriend who invites the heroine back to his place, then, just as they're getting hot and heavy, goes to the bathroom and returns wearing a plastic biohazard suit/hairnet combo before calmly explaining why he has to chop her up and put her in his freezer. Still thought the video was very watchable and funny. Good stuff.

When I first heard about this title I thought it would be about alcohol addiction or some such nonsense (as in the word soma: an intoxicating drink prepared from plants and thought to be the "drink of the gods" in vedic rituals). Now I'm getting that it's more along the lines of being short for "psychosomatic" (a physical or mental illness complicated by the addition of stress). Kudos to you Frictional, that's actually fairly clever.

Doesn't "Soma" just mean "body"? The term "psychosomatic" is a combination of "psyche" (mind) and "soma"-something (body), meaning when problems of the mind affect the body. Like how stress has a negative effect on the body, or how you can believe you've been burned and have your body react as though it were a real burn, things like that. Right?

  • @Arkylie

    @Arkylie

Okay so is all this a metaphor? like is Upsilon suppose to represent his brain and the robots are the neurons or different parts of the brain, the gel represents what they need to function, and the bright white/ blue light represents the feelings or the suppressed memories from the car crash. Since our main character is not properly dealing with that event, it is killing him so physically he is having the headaches and the blood and the pressure aka all the symptoms. In the metaphor, it is destroying Upsilon

the one thing I am still trying to figure is who are the workers that we hear through the data access points? Since it is a man and a woman, my guess is that those represent the main character and Ashley, the co-worker who died in the car crash. The data access points are probably memories involving the main character and her but, to fit the metaphor, the two people work together at Upsilon rather than at a comic store. Atleast I think it is a comic book store but I don't remember what his friend said on the phone during the subway scene. Anyway, the female scientist seems to be in Upsilon and the male scientist is talking to her via walkie-talkie, phone, etc. but the main focus is that they are separated. If I am correct about my theory, then something will happen to her and the cause will be whatever is causing that bright blue-white light since I think that represents the car crash blue but we will see what happens.

+Lys Bonavo I have to agree, I was getting headaches from how dark it was. Most of the time I had to look away and rely on Cry's amazing voice to tell me what's going on.
