The Caro-Kann Defense is an extremely tough nut to crack with the white pieces. Although it is certainly not one of the most popular chess openings ever played, you will see this eclectic system pop up from time to time at the Grandmaster level (and beginner/intermediate levels as well!). Notable Super-GMs playing the Caro-Kann Defense these days are Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Hikaru Nakamura, and they are achieving some pretty good results with it as many players are simply not deeply prepared to fight against the Caro-Kann with the white pieces. And that is where GM Eugene Perelshteyn's new 2.5+ hour chess DVD comes in! GM Perelshteyn focuses exclusively on utilizing the Exchange Variation of the Caro-Kann Defense to play for an enduring initiative with the white pieces. In the following chess video excerpt from the Empire Chess DVD ¨Crush the Caro-Kann with the Exchange Variation¨ viewers will be introduced to fundamental ideas on how to achieve pressure early in the opening with white against the Caro-Kann Defense.

This video almost entirely matches my previous research with stockfish at depth 35 in these lines. White maintains long-term edge and Black must be careful.

Between this and Martin's Caro-Kann video, I have a much better grasp of more fun lines vs the Caro than 3. Nd2. Thank you!

The white pieces setup seems similar to the Exchange French albeit with a half-open open C file.

Great! I'll add the Bd3 move to my repertoire. I always exchange with the caro kann anyways, but I used to play Nf3, Nc3, etc. These lines seem more interesting with Bd3, thanks!

It's a great line, I REALLY recommend it for White, mostly because I have scored well with it... as black... ;-)
