Crushing Egg with Water Pressure in our Deep Sea Chamber

Ғылым және технология

Crushing eggs with water pressure using our 40 ton hydraulic press and our high pressure / deep sea chamber. Everything is filmed through special windows with Chronos 1.4 high speed camera. So this video tells what happens to eggs on bottom of the ocean or mariana trench!

    Oh! 3D printed deep-sea submarine challenge. Set the rules out to make it challenging, but design a model submarine that can withstand the deepest pressure the longest. Some mechanism to tell if it takes on water - sinks in the chamber, attach to a stand with a rod, to keep it in place, if it starts to drop, it's filling with water.

  • @anoninunen

    @anoninunen

    would need to be sealed (with epoxy?) and have a required internal volume. Most items tested so far tended to implode or sink rapidly, so that might be the best metric until proven otherwise. Would need some other requirement to stop every entry from being a sphere - could need to fit in a restricted cylinder, or have a design score, or a self-imposed restriction.

    @@anoninunen If two halves (shell) need to be connected, can a v-channel be part of the design so that a bead of silicone or epoxy is run inside the groove portion, then clamped until set? Trying to be consistent with this part to remove/reduce the failure point. It would likely be the strongest part of the model, but consistent across all contestants. Agreed on no spheres as well, the obvious. I don't 3D print stuff, but designed an injection moulded, light-proof enclosure for a photon-counting device, so not sure if there would be enough variances to make it interesting like the bridge challenge. Think the wall thickness needs to be as thin as possible while still solid enough to hold water, so it's not crazy strong - as we've seen with the flashlights.

    @@blaircox1589 good points, I had forgotten that 3d printing needs support material. If a flood detector was set up in the void (two wires DC separated by rock salt) it could detect a leak. The joint between halves would probably be designed by the person submitting the submarine

    Lauri, just a friendly reminder to sometimes change the bolts securing the lids to the cylinder. I used to work in a place where we did pressure testing of glass fiber insulators. The same lid and bolts were used on each insulator, and on one occasion the lid exploded from the insulator because of the bolts shearing due to the many installation and pressure cycles. If the bolts sheared because of fatigue from the pressure cycles or from repeated over tightening at installation wasn't conclusively determined. Also make sure to test the threads in the cylinder wall with a go/no-go tolerance indicator like once a month or something. Having the lid explode from the cylinder at 300 bars would be a significant emotional event.

  • @HydraulicPressChannel

    I have multiple sets of bolts ready. And since there is lot of pressure shocks on the cylinder we stay always out from the ends while pressurized. The possible failure might be quite interesting if there is lot of gas in the cylinder while it happens :D If there is just water and something small like diving watch nothing much is going to happen.

    @@HydraulicPressChannel Good to hear you keep safe, and already has the hardware! And yeah, since the cylinder is pressurized hydraulically any mishap shouldn't be as interesting as if you had used a gas only. Our insulators were pressurized with air, and the very rapid decompression when our lid got loose was quite eventful. No one was hurt, but one of the girls manning the station (temporary staff employed by Adecco) was shocked and had quite an emotional reaction. ;)

    Something else that can impact how your eggs implode are "checks". Checks are like micro cracks that occur on the surface of the shell. These aren't easily visible, but if you hold an egg up to a bright light you can see them if you look closely. Checks aren't very common though. Modern egg processing machines can easily detect these imperfections and remove those eggs from packaging.

    My theory on why this egg didn't implode while the prior one did is basically what Lauri said. A fresh egg is completely filled with fluid, which is normally incompressible. While the old egg may have some gaseous pocket in it, which _is_ compressible, hence the shell rupturing under pressure, causing it to fail and implode. Edit: I watched further and see that the other eggs ruptured. Now, I'm not so sure about my theory.

    The penguin foam toys you squeezed must be ordinary foam - it got really small but sprang back more than 3/4 of the way when the pressure was released. Try dense styrofoam, like that used to hold up floating docks. I once saw in the National Geographic magazine a styrofoam wig stand shaped like a human head and face that was put into the sub ALVIN's flooded entrance tunnel. The original was about 10 inches tall, after going down several 1000 feet it was about 1 and 1/2 inches tall and still you could see the eye sockets, nose, and lips - and the styro does not spring back.

    It probably wouldn't do any thing. Its internal pressure is far higher (at least as far as I can remember) than what the chamber can provide. If anything it'll be stronger under pressure inside the chamber.

    @@The_Keeper I should have specified further. Obviously the likelihood of one being set off by the pressure alone is low, so you'd need to set it off manually of course.

    I think you should crush metal rods in the press again but have a FLIR camera focused on them so we can see the relative temperature change in real time
