Crushing Day (Live) - Joe Satriani

Музыка

Footage of Joe playing Crushing Day live. He actually played it during this 2002 Strange Beautiful Music tour webcast.
Joe never plays Crushing Day live because it's "cursed". He says that every time he plays it live, someting goes wrong, like the rhythm speeding up, or him messing up on the difficult solo. Also, it's his only composed solo. Most others are improvised, which allows him to have more flexibility in his live performance. His band members usually don't like playing the song either because the rhythm section is quite boring for them.
Enjoy this rare footage, sorry about the quality.

The solos in this song are the hardest of satriani solos! They are so hard, even Joe himself has to put his foot on the speakers while playing it, so he can get leverage to play the extremely difficult passages (info for the non-guitarists) I dont think i have EVER seen Jos put his foot on the speaker except for this song. Ive seen him a million times live, Incredible! Ive also never seem him mess up much except for the solos on this specific song, hes virtually flawless in his performances.

This was a really great concert, the setlist on it is amazing. Joe was a pioneer in many ways, we went the extra mile of making sure this could be broadcasted live on video, please remember that 2002 high-speed broadband internet connections were not even around in most areas yet but he made sure this concert was recorded for posterity. The setlist on it, or at least part of it, was selected by Joe's fans on his website, he was also one of the few musicians at the time to use the internet to get in touch with his fans like that. Thanks Joe

Great, man! That's really kinda rare, I've never seen Joe playing that song in his live concerts. To add to the curse legend: there was a guitar school who claimed that beginners in the art of the electric guitar could play whatever they wanted in the first class day! So my friend went there and wanted to play guess what, Crushing Day, and the school failed (kinda obviously) to keep its promise. Curse it (the school of course, not the song)!

His tour mgr. and friend, Galen, is the rhythm guitarist. How cool is that? You like any of the songs on The Extremist album? Strange Beautiful Music? Is There Love In Space? Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock? That's the same bass player, Matt Bissonette, on all of those. Cool no to like him, but realize that he's been Joe's bass player for some time, now.

Maybe when Joe wrote this song he was faster and more focused on speed (it were the 80's, everyone -like Yngwie, Vai, etc - wanted to play as fast as they could). Today he's almost 52, for me it's normal he has lost some of his speed at his fingers with the age, and somehow, in this video he plays this song great. No matter if he can't play as fast as 21 years ago when he recorded this song, nobody can play it as him. It's just my poor opinion anyway. Hail Satch!!!!!!!!

  • @thehighlander9999

Everything you wrote is true about the styles and all that but the reason is quite simple actually. It's cause he wrte it sitting down and it's far easier to play guitar sitting than standig/performing, that's why he rarely plays it. I also hear that this song doesnt have much room for improv/error (which is true) so satch doesn't like to play it live. I, personally, think satch is the best hes even been riht now, listen to his new CD.

  • @thehighlander9999

i see what you're saying, the last two songs in the album have some classic satch riffs and jammin. Engines of Creation was very experimental also and it doesn't feel anything like Satch. It's almost like he has two styles. He has...dare i say, a tom morrello flare in his creative style. Not that he sounds like Morrello, but becuase he does stuff never done before.
