Ultima Codex interview: ultimacodex.com/interviews/we...
Another Crusader retrospective/review where I continue to ramble about my experiences and thoughts about the Crusader series.
The Silencers' "crusade" continues in this action-packed "sequel". 10 missions, 3 new weapons to play with, and several new gadgets to crush the LMC and WEC. My very first experience with the Crusader series, and my intro into PC gaming. Controls still haven't aged well, but worth getting used to for this mostly forgotten action series.

Loved the Crusader games, my favorites for many years. Particularly the first one, No Remorse. And that ending credits song was just awesome

A+ soundtrack. I still listen to it on my PC every so often.
The soundtrack was handled by Andrew Sega (aka Necros) and Dan Gardopée. Necros was a HUGE part of the 90's demoscene. Crusader was one of the earliest DOS games to use a .mod module based soundtrack, being my introduction in fact as I hadn't used an Amiga personally at that point. You just don't understand how huge of a leap it was over general MIDI. These games (Regret / Remorse) both had a HUGE impact on me back in the 90s, and my curiosity about how the soundtracks worked launched me into audio programming. Origin was a huge component in getting me off my lazy teen ass and educating myself for my own personal gain, instead of as an obligation. Fun fact: The installer for No Regret / No remorse was the first time I had seen a graphical installer with sound, all those before it being silent with standard DOS ANSI graphics.
I hope GoG appreciates what you do. This is the 3rd game I'm buying from them after watching your reviews/retrospectives. Keep 'em coming!

Really? That's awesome! That's at least 40 hours of entertainment right there. If GOG did come across my videos, maybe they could fix up the Ultima Underworld release as appreciation.
It’s cool you are covering these games! They still look amazing today!

Your videos were recommended to me today on my KZread home page. Loving the content dude!
The Crusader games, Gravis Gamepad and Riddle of Master Lu are all big nostalgia touchstones for me, so fun to see them all pop up in the same video!

Riddle of Master Lu is definitely an underrated adventure game. Doesn't have much presence online.
My all time favorite game.
Still playing this game to this day ❤
Thanks so much for covering these games from my childhood! Keep up the great content!

Late reply here but thanks, appreciate the comment.
Your writing and production are really good, you do a good job of covering these classic games, I hope you keep doing it, I think there is a demand for these kinds of videos with the resurgent popularity of retro gaming.

Thanks for the encouraging words, friend. 👍 I'm happy people are enjoying these. I had no idea there was *more* interest in retro gaming, but I do plan on going through old classics regardless. Got a lot of unfinished ones in my library too.
Good, gory fun with surprisingly good cutscenes for a game from that period (yeah, even the cheesy FMV ones). Glad I'm not the only one to remember and still play this old 90's shooter. I was thinking of doing a video on this very game myself!

It was definitely a memorable game for me too. I feel like you can give the soundtrack one listen and it'll be burned into your brain. And you should give it a try, for sure. More eyes on Crusader is always a good thing! 👌
This game is unique. It came out of nowhere and was like nothing we'd seen before. I'm surprised there were no imitators, this game is kind of in it's own genre.
This is thr game that made mw fall in love eith video games .
All i can say the phil soundtrack is one of the best game soundtracks ever and the game still rocks to this day. Need a great sequel soon.

A sequel would be great. Would tie the story together. I still replay the soundtrack to both games every now and again.
The screams when someone's on fire are traumatizing lol.
Both crusader games really need a remaster. If the games were updated to unreal engine 5 or something that would be awesome.
You did what LGR couldnt. Thats a sub.

I played ONE of the Crusader games, but I can't remember the name. No Remorse rings true in my head, but after seeing how janky and funky No Remorse looked and how relatively clean No Regret looked, and when you showed all the death animations, I'm pretty sure it was No Regret. But I had it on Sega Saturn, and I'm pretty sure they only released No Remorse on that console. Hmm! Also, the 8 player pvp game sounds amazing! I would have loved that shit. And Origin! Tony Zurovec! I can't believe one of the guys (probably LOTS of the guys) behind one of my favorite games when I was a kid is making what will surely be one of my favorite games when I'm a dying old man in a hospital bed: Star Citizen. I'm 38 and can't WAIT to play it when I'm 72!

I can definitely say No Remorse was also on the PS1, because that was the only version I played as a kid. Someone mentioned recently that Tony Zurovec is involved with Star Citizen atm, which is pretty great he's still involved with the games development. It's just too bad we never got a conclusion to the Crusader storyline. But yeah as far as Star Citizen goes, your last bit reminded me of this panel 💀: i.imgur.com/Ubl4tYb.jpeg

@@VoidbrandNo Remorse for PC was released in 1995, No Regret in 1996 and No Remorse for PSX and Saturn in 1997. That is why the console versions include gameplay elements from No Regret, for example the forward roll. Console versions are much easier: on PC you start with a pistol, then upgrade to a better pistol while on consoles you start with an assault rifle, just like in No Regret. I like the smooth scrolling of the console versions, although they cut out probably half of the FMVs, and the ones from the Rebel Base were actually my favorite!
The Gravis wasn't something I ever owned, but it was mentioned all over the place, so I have some nostalgia for it through that.

It was a pretty neat controller from what I remember. Just wish I still had it.
This game plus a gravis gamepad represents the beginning of my pc gaming journey as a kid as much as Rebel Assault plus a CH flightstick does.

@Lung Ming It was fun playing No Regret with it back in the day. Wish I still had it. 🤷♂️

It had a really cool design.
I was also a Sega kid growing up. That mention of Dune at the end....what a game. I hope you do a video on it. I loved those old Cryo games. Lost Eden was really good too.

One day I hope to. Actually haven't played it since then, as it was from a copy my dad's co-worker lent him. Or I think it may have been a copied floppy he lent us (lol)
Merci.
Very cool set of games, I really like the style and the Silencer is rad. I remember the Gravis gamepad too! But I don’t remember using it for a whole lot, just Jazz Jackrabbit.

Loved the Gravis gamepad. I think it may have made the game harder though (no quick turning), but I likely didn't read about it then.
Thanks for the great videos on a favorite old series. I'd seen a screen shot of different colored Silencers way back when, so I assume it was from _No Survivors_ . The graphical upgrade in _No Mercy_ sounds pretty sweet, really too bad they weren't able to complete either.

@boaconstrictor37 You're welcome. 💀 I would've loved to see a conclusion to these games, as well as see what Zurovec had in store for No Mercy. These games had catchy names too.

@@Voidbrand Yes! Sometimes I wonder what a game it would be if Tony Zurovec included everything he wanted. Adding some RPG elements would be also amazing.
I had that gravis gamepad. I think I used it with Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Nice to have on the PC in case a console-only friend wanted to try something.
Fuck yeah, more Crusader publicity! No Remorse and No Regret are must-play DOS shooters. You feel super badass the whole time, it's full of secrets and shortcuts etc., and the soundtrack is amazingly good. It (No Regret, the sequel) comes with a 17 page text file explaining the game's story, sparing you no details. It's awesome lol go play them and be sure to read the manuals . I really wish Tony Zurovec would get away from Star Citizen and try to make a third Crusader game happen

Tony does not own the rights to the IP, it is EA. Besides, the Lore content of the IP in todays views might be highly controversial, one reason why we never going to see this being dug up unless someone buys the license back, which I would love to try.
so this is the first spider mine ever
Someone tell nightdive studios to remake this !!!!
"probably not the game for kids" Meanwhile me, playing this at 8: "this is awesome!"
reminds me of XCOM Apocalypse, one of my favorite games
Seriously good animations in these games.

I appreciate the support and encouragement, friend. 👍 I was expecting just a few views at most, but I've noticed my vids getting thrown out there more, especially the recent one. If legit and not bots then I'm surprised as heck.
No Regret really hard on No Regret difficulty.>< Maybe 10 times hardier then No Remorse. Bcs of this I didn't sense No Regret like "slightly shorter".)

@@Voidbrand I played Crusader in high school 25 years ago.) The first part seemed very easy to me even on max difficulty, that's why I select No Regret even in my first play. And first playthrough took about a month instead of a few evenings.
@6:30 OMG, look at the size of the toilet.. Throne room suitable for kings. ..and what is behind the next door..? Another loony size loo!
Loved these games as a kid, would love a remake, truly great games but annoying now if you can’t get the game book or print it out, otherwise a great game no one talks about
i still have my gravis gamepad. lol
the 2 crusader games are just so perfect, specially the 1st one... I think when EA bought origin they made Halo instead of this game... real shame switching red for green and 1st person view.

Played this on PC back in the day. It was the first CD game I bought and I remember really liking it but as you have mentioned the controls were really clunky and I eventually dropped the game and never finished it.
Probably not a game for kids. Opps lol.
