    Andr Pratt the corn laws fucked over the whole of the UK but but did most damage in the industrialising areas of Northern England and the Central Lowlands. Ireland as an agricultural economy inside the tariff barrier was a net beneficiary but it was only the landowners and large farmers that got the money. The main effect was to raise agricultural rents and depress industrial development. So subsistence farmers were forced off the land but without the demand for either industrial or agricultural labour to soak up the additional workers. England was 100-200 years on in the path of centralising agriculture and had more industrial growth to utilise the displaced labour so the effects weren’t as bad. The acts were repealed in 1848 with the aim of reliving the effects of the Irish famine. Without them the changes in Irish agricultural might have been slower but would still have happened as they continued after the acts were repealed and Dublin and Belfast might have industrialised a bit faster meaning more people staying in Ireland rather than moving to Northern England. The corn laws were generally pernicious and were if favour of the established landowners but weren’t anti-Irish.

  • @martinan22

    @martinan22

    3 жыл бұрын

    The vikings were much less successful in Ireland than in England. Since the Irish had never been subjugated by the Romans they still had a martial culture so the Vikings could make much inroads there. The vikings quickly settled for staying in their trade forts and buy the losers in Ireland's perpetual civil wars to sell as slaves to the Arabs in Spain.

  • @davidwright7193

    @davidwright7193

    3 жыл бұрын

    Conn Benn you need to read the actual history not the Irish mythology. The corn laws were repealed as a famine relief measure designed to bring down the cost of food, particularly bread. That was Peel’s explicit aim in removing the Corn laws and it brought down his government. You will find some of the MP’s voting against repeal were representing Irish constituencies. In 1841 43 out of 105 Irish MPs were Tories who backed the Corn Laws of those 32 voted against repeal of the Corn Laws and only 1 of those lost their seat in 1847. One of the reasons repeal failed to do anything to relieve the famine was that reducing the price of food doesn’t help people who don’t buy much food in a good year, have little cash income and pay rent as labour or produce. The state run efforts at famine relief were run under the 1838 poor law. A pretty repulsive piece of legislation but the workhouses set up were UK wide. The soup kitchens set up to provide outdoor relief (help given to people not admitted to workhouses) was run through local government and any conditions imposed would be local.

    Bonus fact: there was a Norse Religious Order/Mercenary group called the Jomsvikings. Their headquarters was located on Jomsbourg, a Polish island. They were mostly of Danish stock, but also had some Swedes among them. They were firmly Pagan, and worked to preserve the Faith, but involving work as mercenaries, they'd join on with anyone who could pay them, so sometimes they also fought alongside Christian Kings. They were efficient, and had a good structure to their Order. And they also were an inspiration for the later Templar groups.

  • @Hazz3r

    @Hazz3r

    3 жыл бұрын

    No it's not. Payed is only used when talking about nautical actions, like paying out a rope or a chain, or paying a joint. The spelling depends on the action you're describing, not the context. While you'll often find the financial version of paid used when describing the nautical actions, you cannot use the nautical payed for the financial action. I imagine the developers made the same mistake as you.

    As a Norse Pagan myself, I appreciate the respect this video shows. And the historic value as well. Some extra facts for everyone: - Baltic Paganism lasted in an official capacity until the 16th century, (though holdouts remained). - Sami Paganism lasted until the 18th century officially. (Also had holdouts). As to the Norse Faith, it had holdouts into the 12th century in some areas, but due to the strategic importance of the Norse mainlands, it was suppressed heavily after the Christianization period officially ended. And these often came about by forceful acts, like the Northern and Balkan Crusades.
