CRUSADE IN THE PACIFIC SHOW Episode 20 "DOORSTEP TO JAPAN: OKINAWA" 73082

Created in 1951, "Crusade in the Pacific" was an early television documentary that remains one of the most comprehensive looks at the Pacific Campaign on land, sea and air. In 24 separate 30 minute episodes, "Crusade" journals the War through tons and tons of basically uncensored stock footage, along with the timeless voice of Westbrook Van Voorhis.
This episode of Crusade in the Pacific, "At Japan's Doorstep: Okinawa" looks at the battle of Okinawa. American Army and Marine forces land unopposed and meet little resistance as they split the island in half. Later, as armies move north and south, fighting grows more fierce. Allied forces eventually capture the north half of the island. In the southern half, stiff Japanese resistance and rain bog down offensive operations. After weeks of fighting the advancing American troops eventually overwhelm defenders. In the end, the Battle of Okinawa proves costly for both sides.

My father fought there as a member of the 27th infantry division. He never spoke of his combat experiences until the last months of his life. Dad was 18 years old. May God bless my father and all who fought and died here!

My father was in the pacific. Said he dodged one bullet. He said that was enough. I wished he had lived long enough for me to tell him I became a combat veteran as well. I salute you Dad

Could someone please tell me what self-propelled artillery piece is shown at 14:19 of this video? Thanks. The amount of actual combat footage shown here is impressive.

David Rowley I do believe that is an M-18 Hellcat tank destroyer. Same 75 mm gun as most Shermans, but little heavy armor. Very fast for the time and an effective mobile platform
