CRUISING TO GUERNSEY | British Channel Islands UK | Cruise Vlog #5

Quick recap - we're on our first cruise, departing with Princess Cruises on Sapphire Princess from Southampton UK. Today we arrived in St Peter Port, Guernsey, to explore our last cruise port.
Guernsey is in a unique spot in the UK, it's actually part of the British Channel Islands so is quite popular with various boat trips and cruise travel as well. We were pleasantly surprised with how welcoming, similar and yet so different Guernsey was to the other spots in the UK we've travelled.
Guernsey is one of those places we never really imagined we'd get the chance to travel, thankfully it was the last included stop on our cruise and we had the whole day to get lost, eat food and embrace the local good stuff ( aka cider 🤣 )
That's the last cruise vlog from our trip on Sapphire Princess with Princess Cruises.

Nowhere is perfect but Guernsey has a per capita income which compares favourably with the wealthiest in the world. Ive travelled a fair bit and it's the only place Ive lived where there are no beggars or street people. It's an off shore financial centre, has some of the tightest immigration controls Ive ever encountered (and why not) and open market property prices which would make your eyes water. I love Guernsey. It's an oasis.

I lived in Guernsey’s neighbour Jersey for 2 years. The tax haven is great but groceries need to be imported so are more expensive but if the ships can’t dock due to weather the supermarket shelves get empty. There’s a small island called Herm a short boat ride away that has no motor vehicles on it. I loved the honesty boxes for fruit and vegetables as close to fresh and organic as you can get

To answer some common questions, from someone who has lived in Guernsey for 26 years.... 1) No, we are just as bad at French as people who live in England. The Guernsey-French Patois is a dying language, there are only around 100 people left who can speak it fluently out of a population of about 65K people. 2) The culture is almost entirely British as well. The BBC is on TV, we get English radio stations and almost all of the same big shops you would find in England (WH Smiths, Waitrose, you saw M&S in Boots in this, you get the idea) 3) It's actually really boring to live here because its so small so you see literally everything about 100 tomes over and you can't just drive up to the next town over 4) despite tax advantages day to day cost of living is actually slightly higher than the UK 5) There is some truth in the law being written partly in French despite everyone speaking English, to the extent that a mandatory part of qualifying as a local lawyer is to spend a year studying in France.

Whilst Guernésias (pronounced JER-nez-yay) is an endangered language, there was, as at 2016, still more than 1,300 people who spoke it fluently (which equates to approximately 2% of the population). Guernsey law has its roots based in Norman Customary law (Coutume), but has been influenced by both English and Commonwealth common law. Law students wishing to qualify as Guernsey Advocates of the Royal Court are required to study as full time students for three months, for a qualification in both French and Norman law, at Caen University. Your assertion that it is 'really boring to live [in Guernsey]' is of course subjective. Granted, whilst you will not find the level of entertainment that is on offer in major cities such as London, I think there is a lot on offer in Guernsey and a quality-of-life that is difficult to beat.

Hello! everyone who happens to live in Guernsey and sees my comment, I need help please. I have known a girl from Guernsey for like five years on Wattpad, an application for free writing and reading but four or five months ago she deleted her account and seemed really not fine at that time. She disappeared without leaving anything to contact her and I've been worried sick. So truly I am. Her name is Jamie and her middle name is Paige. unfortunately I don't know her last name. She has two elder identical twins brothers with age gap of ten years. One of them was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2017 and was sent to South Hampton. She always said it was funny because her other brother had arthritis and that she thought they were meant to do things together. Jaimie is supposed to be in her last year of high school now. She's tall and has blue eyes that change sometimes. Her best friend is called Lydia and another called Milly. She loves apple pies and cheese cakes. Her favorite color is blue and preferably dark blue. Her favorite food is fish and chips. Please don't ignore my comment and help me. I am so worried and have been overthinking. I cry even. If I could, I would fly to Guernsey but I can't. Please HELP!

From what I have heard, in the channel islands the official language is still French. The laws are drafted in French, and the law courts still conduct their business in French. And the legal system, although broadly common law, is based in norman customary law. So you have to be qualified in Jersey or Guernsey to practice law on the islands. So did you see any of that? Did you hear locals speak French, or any kind of English-French patois?

@@DanegerAndStacey I'll be going there myself in August. It's a law training event. Hope their French is not too quaint for me to understand. I do speak the language, but not to the extent to understand obsolete vocab and anachronistic accents. We shall see. And I sure hope their English is standard British, because I have a hard time understanding some regional UK accents too.

Especially for working with brands, which is the only way to actually make a living from KZread 🤙🏼
