When I was in Cozumel, there was a guy asking to trade $10 notes with us because "they wouldn't take the torn one." It had a tiniest split on the bottom of it. We politely declined and said we didn't have cash, but it definitely felt like he was trying to swap out fake bills with the tourists' real ones. So I'd watch for that kind of scam as well.

Please be sure to watch out for bait-and-switch scams. I was in Turkey and purchased an item, the salesperson took it to the back of the shop and wrapped it nicely, and I thought, how nice of them to do that for me, only to find out that he switched the item for some cheap crap.

Yes the taxi cab scammed me and my fellow navy sailors in Spain, however the taxi cab driver made a critical mistake, sailors love to fight and it didn’t end well for him.

Three Tips: 1.Never get in a taxi alone, even if you already have plans to meet up with friends or a group at the destination. You can often be robbed or extorted for money to be let out of the cab. 2. Ask in advance if the taxi driver/tour guide takes cash for payment BEFORE getting in it and be very leery of using a credit card anywhere that isn't a well known and established business. Some will claim they can only take a credit card and won't let you out until you've paid. They will either swipe it for a much larger amount, or will charge the correct amount but then immediately use it to charge a huge sum of money to your card right afterwards without being the wiser. 3. Always look for the license plate and/or identifier of a taxi/tour vehicle as well as any business type name BEFORE getting in it, then document it once in the vehicle. If anything goes amiss you'll have that info. Also, if you feel something isn't right once in the vehicle, once you get to your destination immediately mention it to any staff that may be right outside. They can usually help, and help identify the driver/company.

We thought we were being scammed by a taxi driver in Paris last year. My husband asked me to wait in the car a minute while he took a photo of the license. Twenty minutes later, the concierge called us to say the driver had returned with some cash for us. Once, in Istanbul, when the driver "missed" the driveway for The Conrad Hilton and wanted me to walk up the hill, I just got out without paying. When a guy near the Taj Mahal kept harassing us to buy photos or something, my husband started speaking in what I can only call fake Japanese. That worked. But most of our travels have been great. Istanbul is still one of my favorite cities.

It happens all over the world with taxis. Taxi driver offering a great deal of showing all the sights, I was dubious but my mate was all for it.. this happened in Thailand. How many temples can you be interested in lol Barcelona is thief city for pickpockets, the worst in the world. They go for the tourists as the police are not the slightest bit interested in tourists reporting crime. Do Not Carry a Wallet or Purse in Barcelona… In Dublin we got a taxi travelling to the rail station , but this guy was going Gawd knows where but I knew the way and said to him ooi mate, where the … are you going too Oh thought you said wherever. No you didn’t he got the quoted money Not the meter reading

Here is a scam we avoided in Jamaica a long time ago. We were not on a cruise but staying at an all inclusive resort in a cruise port town. All inclusive guests typically wear a wristband for the duration of their stay. Someone came up to us and said "Hey, how are you? I recognize you from the hotel, I work in the restaurant." He tried to hard sell us a taxi trip around the island, but we knew better and we refused. Turns out he did not work at the hotel, he just recognized the wrist band, so he knew which hotel we were staying at. A licensed taxi driver told us this is a typical kidnapping-for-ransom thing. They call the hotel and the hotel calls your emergency contact. My advice is to always go with a licensed, authorized tour. Those tour guides are still local, they still live there, and while it might cost more, there is a good reason for that: those are professional guides and you will enjoy your vacation more with a sense of safety and security.

A cab driver in Barbados stole us from another cab and took us to a different beach bar because the one we wanted was "no good." She was giving us a lecture on how the waiter was her special friend and would take care of all our needs. He would then call her to bring us back to the ship when we were ready. I interrupted her and asked how much we owed her for the cab ride out, handed her the $8 and then walked to the beach bar we wanted. Everyone else from the cab van did the same exact thing. We wanted a particular beach bar for sentimental reasons, they took good care of us and they paid for the cab to take us back to the ship. I am all for people making a living, but I agree not to put up with obvious scams!

I said to hubby we shall take this phone so if we ask or have someone offer to take our photo, we will hand them this phone and not our personal phones…they steal it, guess they need it more than we do.😂 $100 phone versus our personal phones that cost more and have all our info on it.

HI This was great!!! My family and I were on a Bermuda cruise when we got off in port and found a taxi driver to take us to the beach. It was a distance away and with the younger kids we decided to take that taxi. Well the taxi driver convinced us to pay for the return trip and he would come back for us. He never did come back. We didn't have a phone and we started to walk back to ship. We were quite blessed to meet some locals that walked us all the way back to the ship. We tried to give them money for doing it and they wouldn't take it. They felt bad that we were "tricked". If we hadn't met those locals we would have been very lost. Also when taking pictures be aware that if there is a donkey or carriage decorated near where you are standing the owner will most likely tell you you have taken that picture, that you owe them money for that picture. It happened to us multiple times.

Similar thing happened to us in Cabo San Lucas. We paid round trip to go to the other side of the beach. We got out of the boat and "Jose" said he would pick us up in an hour. When we returned to the pick-up spot, no Jose. Another boat was there and the helmsman said Jose took some passengers to "El Arco" and would not be back soon. So we paid the other guy another $5 to return to the ship. Lesson learned.

New Yorker here-someone will walk into you, act like you bumped into them and that it made them drop their glasses, they start confronting you that you owe for the glasses. Or people coming up to you with a long drawn out story about needing money (for the bus, for “my mother” in an apt nearby) and want to follow you to an ATM. Some folks have fallen for someone in an ATM desperate because their check won’t clear on time for some urgent need, ask to give you the check in exchange for cash, of course the check is bad. Lots of online scams on Facebook or marketplace with ticket reselling, apartments, you name it. And yeah we use the term mugging for violent threats and acts during a personal robbery and pickpocketing for stealing without detection, very common with backpacks, I haven’t used one for twenty years since an attempted pickpocket. Caught the guy while exiting the subway station claiming he “just bumped into” me, all backpack pockets were zipped open so I yelled at him “yeah right!”. He missed my wallet and palmpilot so I think he only got some tampons.

When we were in St John’s a horde of people surrounded us trying to separate me and my son. They walked several blocks with us trying to get us to go in the taxis. I was stoic and kept walking without looking any of them in the eye just saying no thank you. One of the the men didn’t like that and started calling me names etc. I wasn’t rude but incredibly overwhelmed and scared about them trying to get between my child and me. It was a horrible experience that turned me off cruising.

The mugging thing can get even more devious if you're with a child. Thieves will simply exploit the fact that children are usually unsuspecting. It happened to us in Prague (not a cruise obviously) where on a crowded street some very young girls walked up to us and basically stuck a rose in the hands of my daughter who was 7. Naturally she just took it without thinking. Now as a parent you're in a sticky situation. Your child already took it, you have to give them some money right?. As my wife did. We walked away without suspecting any foul play and it was only minutes later, already on a different street when we noticed that a 100 Eu bill was missing from my wife's wallet.

I was just thinking that it may also be best to only take the amount you are planning on spending at port on you. That way, if you get money stolen, that's all gets taken, and you don't have to mess with replacing your card, etc. In terms of money belts, you can get something that many runners wear, which is a spi-belt or flipbelt. They can easily hide under clothes, plus they have zipper compartments, and can hold lots of stuff without looking bulky (mine even holds my google pixel phone).

Also, you need to be very careful on public transportation such as subways, trains, etc.

I've experienced this and we just stayed in the taxi until the police arrived. No problem after they arrived and we actually ended up not paying because the police basically told the taxi guy he was going to jail for fraud. (edit) THIS as far as pickpockets: "Stay the eff away from me man, don't touch me!. In addition, watch who is coming toward you on your side of the street when you're strolling. And switch sides to stay away from anyone who can touch you. Counterfeit stuff? C'mon, you know if it's too cheap it is not genuine. Or sizzling hot. Take your pick. Good advice and if it makes folks think twice, you've done a great service. Thanks and stay safe.

Not cruise related, but I had my backpack stolen on my first trip to Europe back in 2005. I was quite naive and not enough aware of my surrounding. I was sitting on a bench and looking at my camera for some setting. A guy call me and tell me to look somewhere. I see noting and he call me again to show me. A few minutes later, I realised that my backpack that was beside me was gone. In it I had my passport, plane ticket and many other things. It was a lot of trouble to get a new passport and plane ticket (back then they where not electronic) but the worst was that I lost my guidebook where I had noted all the places I wanted to visit. Since that incident, I'm more aware and on my guard. Twice I have caught pickpockets in the act, once in Prague and once in Lisbon. There are pickpocket everywhere, even in your own city, so I can't say avoid this place or that. You don't have to be paranoid and overly stressed, but you must realize that as a tourist, you have a big target on your back. People believe that if you travel, you are rich and an easy prey and even if caught, the chances that you will bring them to the police are slim. So be aware of your surrounding and alert, but keep enjoying your vacation. Another scam concerning taxi is that they will take the long road to get you from A to B if they use the meter, costing you a lot more than the shorter route would.

If at all possible, stick to the taxis at ports that have the government approved rates posted right at the dock and don't accept ANY variation. We stayed at a hotel in Barcelona that supposedly had complimentary shuttle to the airport, but their shuttle didn't operate early enough in the morning for our flight....so we had the hotel call us a taxi. First, the fare to get to the airport was about three times what the info on line said it should be. When we got to the airport, the traffic along the drop off area wasn't moving at all and the meter kept ticking away. I repeatedly asked the driver to let us out, and he kept insisting that he "couldn't" stop there. Finally I looked at my daughter and said that we were going to have a problem because the meter was almost to the point where it would cost all the money I had left. Low and behold, he instantly stopped the cab and we were able to get out. This was probably 12 years ago before cabs were taking credit cards, but.....lesson learned. Now I ask how much it should be before we get in. If they argue that they can't tell me or it will be whatever the meter says, I insist that they give me an approximate amount, and if that isn't close to what the hotel and/or internet said it should be, I'll ask that a different cab be called. NOTE--we only used this hotel once; it is not my "standard" place to stay.

Once on board and unwrapping you might find they have switched your expensive item for a cheap one. Had a great time but when we got back, he stated that I owed him the amount of the other tour. We went back and forth. I ended up paying him the amount of the bailed tour. I even went to the tour supervisor and told them about what went on. The supervisor lied and said that he was there when we agreed on the price. No, the supervisor was not there. But I just chalked it up to a scam. Now I record what the quote is on my phone. DO NOT GO WITH FELIX on St, Thomas. The funny thing is that right as I am getting ready to go I asked Felix if I could take his picture to post online to show everyone what a rip-off artist looked like. He immediately covered his face and ran away. But I do have a picture of him.

Once, when my mother was traveling in India with her friends. They were in an outside market , she saw an oriental rug that she thought I would like. She verbally repeated several times ,,as she paid a lot of money , that when they mailed /shipped the rug to me, they would roll it, not fold it. I received a nice folded, oriental rug …..that we could never get the folds out of/it was permanently creased. I even took it to several local stores to see if they could fix it in. any way, they could not . My guess is that they showed my mother, the good/fancy rug, and then had crappy folded rugs in the back that they sent to the addresses of the people that purchased.

Hey Lucy, As a shopping Ambassador you say there's connections with some stores in the Ports, & so in the event something goes wrong/scam by the shop, unexpectedly, what happens if the guest/passenger says you recommended the shop, what then?

As a 17 year old cruiser getting off the ship at Cabo San Lucas, a guy with a huge iguana came right up to me and plopped it on my shoulders and it started crawling on my head. We thought it was funny at the time and took some pictures and I'm sure we paid the nice man $5 or whatever. But looking back on it....don't do that. Don't get up in my space and put a creature on my body without my permission and expect me to pay you for the privilege.

We was on sky princess in July and my brothers girlfriend drunkenly spent £400 on two pairs of earrings, she instantly regretted it the next day, these earrings didn’t even come in a box! Just in two small zippy bags…. We went back and requested a refund, when I say the sales woman was rude that was an understatement! She was extremely patronising telling my brothers girlfriend that she’s an adult and shouldn’t get drunk, I butted in and said you shouldn’t be serving and encouraging drunk passengers to make large purchases, she then had the audacity to shush me and tell me I’m not her customer!! We got a refund in the end, and the sales woman missed out, as I intended to buy back one pair of earrings for my brothers girlfriend as an Xmas present surprise later on, but after getting shushed I thought hell no! Put me off purchasing onboard if I’m honest.

Two pieces of advice for avoiding the taxi scams, and these could be used in your advice for cruisers. 1) Only take official taxis or similar services at the ports. If the car is unmarked and was not ordered through uber/Lyft or other rideshare services. Say no 2) Make sure the driver starts the meter in any taxi. All three of these scams could have been avoided if you said: Start the meter at the beginning of the journey and then demand a receipt at the end. As soon as you demand that the meter be started or you will get out and find another taxi, any potential scammer will know that there chances of a scam are close to zero as there is now an official record of the trip. Muggings and Barcelona. Barcelona is world famous for pick pocketing. As suggested, a money bag and also wearing your backpack as a frontpack is essential. I do wonder in your job as a shopping ambassador, even though I liked the term Port Lecturer 👍 how you tread the line between giving useful information and up selling the next port, but also trying to give the passengers useful information on what to avoid?

In Costa Maya on my first contract. We got convinced to go to a beach resort that was being advertised outside the port for $20 per person, there was only me and a friend so we thought why not. We were told there was wifi, kayaks, welcome drinks etc. We got given wristbands and then put into a taxi. We got out when the taxi driver stopped and we were a bit confused cause it didn't look like the pictures. The host guy took our wristbands off us which was a bit odd, the wifi didn't reach the beach, there was one dirty kayak and we had to ask/tell the guy about the welcome drinks because it wasn't offered to us. After about 20 minutes we decided to leave cause it was pretty crap and we weren't gonna give them our money by buying any food or drinks from them. As we were leaving though this guy started following us and we kept trying to ditch him but he was getting kinda aggressive and following us. Eventually we did get away and found the main "strip" of shops and restaurants. We even managed to find the actual place that we'd paid to go to. This guy had basically poached another business' customers and then been rude and aggressive when we tried to leave. Only went to Costa Maya once that whole contract and it definitely didn't give a good first impression.

Also, taxi drivers charging per person is a ridiculous thing and doesn't happen anywhere other than tourist places. I don't know why we (tourists in general) put up with it.

Just curious, when you go shopping in the port with a customer, that would usually be your time off. Does the cruise line pay you for this service or the customer or both? Does it depend on the price of the purchase how much you earn for this service or is it based on time. Just being nosey 😂

I’m going to take you at your word, and be as blunt as only we Americans can. I’d appreciate more information on shopping ambassadors. In my experience, their main function was to increase sales on board and with on shore merchants who pay to be recommended. I’m not accusing you of this, I’m just saying that has been my experience.

Some truly great tips....usually videos like this are just common sense, but as usual, this went above & beyond. I will admit to not thinking "per person" in a cab etc. Here is one I almost fell for, in a place you wouldn't expect it...Amish Country! Waiting for a table in a restaurant, we went into a truly tacky, overpriced gift shop across the street, selling pure junk from China. You could see none of it was homemade. Now I am a sucker for Amish hand stitched, high quality anything. Hand painted stuff on hand built stuff etc. So we laughed at this junk shop & left. A day or so later we are in a roadside stand. To this day, the best cinnamon buns I've ever had (and trust me, I've had a LOT). Saw some clearly homemade stuff, picked up a couple jarred products. THEN on a shelf, I saw some of the fake, made in China painted trash that I saw in the other store. EEEK. There was a sweet, young Amish woman working & I asked her if this was locally painted. To her credit, she was honest (I was about to put everything back & leave). She even told me most places buy stuff because they can't keep up the inventory during the busy season. Hey, hand stitching & painting etc take time lol. As the week went on, I was shocked how much of this stuff I saw around town. And my new, fav question was "is this locally made" or "did you paint this"? Thankfully the Amish are honest. But wonder how many tourists got ripped off (a lot of the stuff wasn't cheap). So, like most things, being an educated consumer is your best bet, and asking questions helps. Unlike most ports, at least they didn't lie!
