CRUISE LINE MAY MOVE YOUR CABIN EVEN IF YOU DON'T WANT TO CRUISE NEWS.
NCL brings to new dining options to their newest cruise ship. Travel agents are getting asked to move client from a cabin that holds 3 or more people to another cabin if only 2 passengers are booked. MSC cancels a Grand Voyage for the right reason. Cunard cancels it's test sailing on the brand new Queen Anne cruise ship.

I don't want my cabin changed. I pick out a cabin based on location and pay for that cabin as is required by contract. I would be very upset with a move.

I booked an aft cabin a year ago for Liberty of the Seas for May 4. When they issued the luggage tags they had moved my room to the side. I called and complained because I wanted the aft balcony. They said there was a maintenance problem with the room and they gave me a $100 credit. I am going to check when I board. If someone is in my original room there is going to be a huge problem.

@@pamelabrauer9450 RCCL insists the new room is a large balcony and the aft room I booked on deck 9 was classed as a small balcony. I wanted the aft balcony because it is deeper and you get a lounge chair. The balconies on the side may have a foot or two more but you do not get a lounge chair. I am calling again to complain. I reserved a aft room over a year ago and paid in full. I should get more out of this switch or give me the original room back.
If a cruise line arbitrarily changes my cabin for THEIR benefit, I'm arbitrarily changing cruise lines. I chose the cabin, paid the requested price, and only health and safety are valid reasons for them to change that contract.

some people have motion sickness and need mid ship....I would be really mad about a automatic cabin change!
I don't like the idea at all that the cruise line may arbitrarily change your cabin!
As a solo cruiser, I pay for that cabin based on double occupancy. And I make sure my agent knows that I do not want to switch cabins because I choose the particular cabinet deck that I want. And if they did that to me, I feel that I have the right to cancel the cruise and get all my money back. And then go to another cruise line.

I think that as a solo cruiser, we should be allowed to then cruise for free. Its bad enough they want to charge us double and triple for a cabin in the first place or put solo cabins in icky high motion sickness spots or simply don't put in solo cabins in the first place. No, I paid, I should get what I paid for. I don't care that the cruise lines don't care.

Unfortunately it probably in the contract they can do the change.
Changing a cabin that has been selected, and reserved, by a passenger is totally unacceptable !!!! I would be furious!
If any cruise line switches my chosen cabin to another without first contacting and negotiating a fair compensation, that is an excellent way to lose my business permanently. If they do in order to maximize their revenue, I will absolutely demand a 100% refund plus compensation for associated costs. This practice you describe has a name with a long history : its called "bait and switch". It's illegal in many locations.

Agreed
it's bye bye Holland america if they start that game, if I've paid for a particular cabin in a particular location I'm not being moved to somewhere I don't want to be.
On my first cruise with Oceania they changed my room. They moved us to the Owners Suite so I’m not complaining about that change!
HAL moved our cabin last year without telling us... We found out the day we boarded. We chose that cabin for my wife's mobility reasons.... They said we were getting an upgrade. We didn't ask for or want the upgrade.... 5 hours of fighting with them.... we finally got our original room we wanted. Not a good way to start a cruise.... We have 300 days with HAL..... We are really noticing the cruises cost more $$$$ for a lot less.
Holland America SHOULD tell people upfront that if you are 1 person in a 3 person cabin, you have to pay a single supplement etc. Letting you book someone and THEN forcing them out is in my opinion similar to a bait and switch.
Years ago, Cunard would offer Sail and Stay. Sailing from San Juan to Barbados, staying one week at their hotel there, and rejoining the ship the following week. Then continuing the cruise back to San Juan. Wonderful trips, Best of both worlds.
Horrible idea Holland America! This might bump short term profits but it will definitely create long term resentment by those bumped to a less desirable cabin. Bad faith, bad business decision.
I would be upset if my cabin was changed because I pay more to be in a certain area of the ship. Why don't ship websites and travel agents tell customers that certain cabins are for more cruisers than those booked in the cabin?
I am solo, so the moving your cabin deal makes me nervous We are already paying for 2 people. What's next?
Cruise companies not caring about there customers.
From my experience, hotels that are rated 4 stars in Europe are the equivalent of 3 star hotels in the US. Also, does anyone else not like the look of the painting on the outside of NCL ships? It’s cheesy looking to me.
I am so disappointed w Holland America moving people from their requested cabin; an upgrade is always great but I wonder if this is he best way to keep return cruisers. I respect this is a business but Customer satisfaction should be balanced with the needs of the cruise line to make a reasonable profit.
Back in 2004, my husband and I were booked on NCL in a 3 person inside cabin, and when we got to the ship, our cabin had been changed to a 2 person cabin. We were thrilled, because it was our 25th Anniversary cruise and were now in a balcony cabin. Our only problem was that our luggage had the original cabin tags on them, so we went in search and found our luggage by the original cabin. Great upgrade!
Royal Caribbean changed my stateroom on me! What REALLY makes me upset is that I booked it as a Back-to-Back and originally had the same room for both legs. They gave me NO explanation! My Travel Agent has been trying to figure out HOW or WHY they did this! They had better make this right....

I had a back to back during COVID where Royal moved me from an oceanview to a balcony. We found out early and no I didn’t get the same cabin, however they asked the passenger if they’d trade and they did. Still didn’t like the upgrade because the room was smaller, but since they weren’t full a lot of people got moved around. They did leave me in an accessible which is normally full a year ahead! Also had friends on MSC have their regularly room changed a couple of times claiming it was cdc saying they needed the spacing. But then they couldn’t fix it because they’d put someone else in the cabin. That was a Royal mess as they pick ther rooms very carefully because of sound.

Don't switch my cabin unless it's a free upgrade. If the cruise line makes more for selling my cabin to someone else, I should get a cut!
If I pay upfront for a cabin of my choice I expect to get it not be bumped so the cruise line can accommodate someone else and make more money
What's next? Are they going to start putting folding cots and placing extra passengers in occupied cabins that can hold them whether you want them or not.. And for goodness sake watch out for any unused pull out sofa beds, that's just begging for a couple of extra unwanted roommates .. Hey it maximizes profit so what's the big deal, I'm sure they will give you a small onboard credit for the inconvenience...😂 On a bright note I am just a few days from going on my NCL TransAtlantic cruise .. My first since 2019... And yes I will be in a balcony cabin by myself with plenty of room to spare without any worry of a unauthorized cabin switch.. So excited to finally getting back out there..😂
If HAL is playing Tetris with their passengers, how many people are they packing onto the ships😔 I’d be worried about overcrowding impacting my enjoyment of my holiday
Princess already offers hotel stays pre and post cruise. I usually book 3-7 days at a Princess before a cruise.
For MSC going from Germany to Dubai empty is the right move! Going south you pretty much all have to have yellow fever vaccinations, no waivers, because you are traveling through countries with malaria then in a safe country within the 14 day window. It’s a royal mess dealing with that.
You have paid thousands of dollars for a cabin on Holland America to get an email. “Dear Passenger. We now have your money. To help us make more money we have moved you to a smaller cabin next to the engine room and above the disco that no-one wants so we can sell your cabin at full price again. Dont worry, the price will be the same and the gratuities will be the same. You should be able to get some sleep on port days (less engine noise) when our disco is quiet. Your new rabbit hutch … I mean cabin is on deck zero. Have a great cruise and we look forward to taking your money for future cabins you will never see.”

I went through this (2010) on a Nile river cruise, part of a Colette vacations trip in Egypt. The “upgraded” river cruise boat was intended for drunk Italians, and that’s what our group of about 25 older Americans had to deal with. The meals were awful (almost all pasta), my roommate and i were over the disco, and to compensate us for the change they put a bottle of Egyptian wine in each room (we don’t drink) and had a reception in which raw vegetables were set out as munchies. Some of the people ate those veggies and were violently sick for the entire cruise. You don’t eat raw veg in Egypt!

So, Don. At what point do we have to do what we did with airlines? Contract of carriage that protects the consumer, it seems like cruise lines are trying to squeeze every dime out of people with no regards to their PR....I am a relatively new cruiser and have two scheduled for this year...Mexico in June and Alaska late September, but if this keeps going the way its going, I will return to my previous vacations of land/hotel/vacation rentals... its just too unsettling to have them make arbitrary changes on a financial whim... They need to be held accountable somehow.
I’ve seen comments on Facebook that people on Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas have had their rooms changed even when they paid to have a specific and not gty room…I checked my Radiance Alaska cruise and so far I’m still in the room I booked over a year ago!
Plant based is anything that comes from plants. Hamburgers would be made from peas, soybean, black beans and more. They aren’t bad at all.
If the cruise line wants to force guests to change cabins, then they need to make the whole ship “guaranteed” category, without the upcharge for choosing your own room.
Shout out to Tony and the "Cruise Hands" -- I don't want a cabin change. I choose my cabin to suit me. Don't change without my input. I try hard to find a quiet corner away from traffic and noise. I have an upcoming HAL cruise and will keep an eye out for any changes.
We often choose a cabin with a sofa and in a good location for us. If we are no longer able to specify the cabin, a privilege we pay for, then we may as well cancel the cruise and choose another ship which appreciates our custom. Cruise lines, beware alienating your passengers, who have supported you in the past, and who have the money to support you in the future when the cruise bubble bursts.
I almost saw cruise hands! 😅 Holland- I would not want my cabin changed, without a notice!! Royal did that during Covid to quarantine new crew and gave my mom an upgrade, but took her from a handicap to a non and could not even fit her shower bench or elevated toilet seat in the balcony cabin in addition, long walk to the elevator- didn’t notice us until we got the check in new cabin! We were told they would move us, once sailed and never did!! I had to push a wheelchair because she could not walk that far with her walker!
if you have paid for a specific cabin, how are they allowed to change it?? You have a contract!

Changing my cabin like that and it would be the last time I cruised with them
My Hubby now uses a wheelchair. After we were put in a cabin at the very front of the ship we had to negotiate the halls filled with laundry carts and food trays people put in the hall every time we left the cabin. From then on we’ve always picked a cabin directly by the elevators. I would be highly upset to be moved down a hallway.
@user-ji9nq8yt7k

I need accessible rooms near the elevators for the exact same reason. On a recent cruise there were times I couldn’t get out of the cabin due to carts, food trays, and scooters parked in the hallways. I called Guest Services at least twice a day to get the scooters removed, which didn’t always get resolved.
Shout out to all to Tony!
We booked an aft balcony on ROYAL CARIBBEAN for the Norwegian Fjords. After final payment, they gave us a GTY (Guaranteed Cabin). No communication between Royal and my travel agent or me!!!! They said there was a system error that triple-booked our cabin, and gave the aft to the first person that booked it. (We booked 2 years ago). I will be finding out when on board. Our travel agent finally got a dedicated balcony and only a $50 OBC/ea. I’m going to write to them - not a happy camper.
We book our cruise over a year out, so we can get a certain cabin. It is all about greed with these cruise lines.
If they want to change the cabin that I paid extra for it better be a LOT better cabin (my view of better, not theirs).
When you book a certain cabin most of the time you are paying a premium for it if the move you they need to refund the premium. Not right for them to do that
Thank you Don, Great information but got to say as a solo cruiser and one that like to be in a certain area of the ship I would be very upset if they change my cabin. especially with the extra cost for a solo cruiser.
HAL has always had a spot on your reservation where you can choose to let them upgrade you or not. I have the not part checked as their idea of an upgrade is not always the same as mine. If you have it checked to be upgraded I don’t think you are given an option to refuse an upgrade if you don’t like it.
I am excited to hear about the plant based restaurant. I hope this type of cuisine is taken up by other cruise lines.
I had already canceled my Holland America cruise for August 2024 (because I figured out within in week of the Middle East blowing up that there was no way they'd go to Israeli ports), but I know I'd be upset if my carefully selected stateroom was yanked out from under me. I pick them based on a number of factors. If I can't get a Lido deck balcony, I want a balcony stateroom between two decks of staterooms and not near a ship venue. That's because I want quiet. I also pick port or starboard for specific reasons. On my recent Australia / New Zealand, I wanted that starboard side as it faced land as we moved south to north in New Zealand, but as it also gave a fabulous view of the Sydney Opera House at departure, well, that would have been the side even if the ship went north to south in New Zealand. I don't like being moved from my pre-selected, pre-reserved things. I accepted it when flying back home from Sydney to Los Angeles as the seat I had pre-booked was broken, but I resented being moved from Los Angeles to Las Vegas because a couple apparently couldn't stand to be apart for that horribly long 45 minute flight. In neither case did they tell me in advance. I presented my ticket for boarding and it got flagged. Yeah, the airline strategy is to pull this stunt at the last possible second, limiting your ability to fight it. I'm almost going to guess that cruise lines will adopt that strategy as well. I mean, they already pulled that stunt where the passengers were told that they were going to Canada instead of the Caribbean on boarding day, not to mention those passengers who were denied boarding because their policy of overbooking meant they were overbooked.
I am really fussy about my location. If I got moved for that reason, it would be my last sailing with that cruise line.
About cabin-canges, this may affect group-cruises! Families may flee the cruiseline.
Totally agree if I have hand picked my cabin, thats the one I want. If they want give some compensation that would be different.
Holland America is crazy to move your cabin you pick out.😢
No way! I want my chosen room unless an upgrade is offered!
NCL's two restaurants sound awesome, especially the plant-based option. As for the cruise line that's opting to change a selected cabin to accommodate another traveler...not cool. I pay the higher cost to select my preferred cabin and would not be happy if I didn't select my own cabin, even if the cruise line considered the forced move to be a higher category. I would rather cruise with other lines just to avoid the possibility of it happening to me.
I don’t think Tony would mind if you did cruise hands. 😊
On our alaska cruise with HAL, my entire group of 12 people had inside rooms. Inside rooms were sold out but ocean view were not selling so they upgraded my whole party to oceanview and I suppose resold our old inside cabins. Win win.
Celebrity already does the stays called “city stays”. We are doing the after cruise city stay in Rome in August.
No , that s why we picked our cabin
Things like this make me thing inaugural sailings might not be the best way to go. The switching of cabins is not good, if you have picked out where you want to be and paid the price.
Love the Plant based restaurant choice!
I wouldn't pay extra to eat plant based foods, but if included, I will try it. I wouldn't like having by cabin changed, especially if I actually chose the one I wanted.
Better watch out I think Tony is going to think you're trying to steal his Cruise hands😂

I just want to see Don announce cruise news… for your FACE!
I'm not a plant based foodie either.
Happened to us on our last Carnival cruise. Booked a specific room. Boarded fully expecting said room. Nope. We had to walk around looking at key cards till we found our room several doors down. The room we ended up with was so bad we asked to disembark at the first port.
We booked a 7 day Alaskan cruise for June. No problems.
I have thought about trying Holland America, but if this is their practice to change peoples’ rooms, I won’t be trying them at all!
I needed a cabin for 3 people and a cabin for 2 people for my family on HAL. All the 3 people inside cabins were booked when the ship was only 50% full. I'm sure couples are taking those inside cabins for the little extra room and couch. I guess, first come first served, but i see HAL point.
what do you mean Alaska cruises are sold out? there are literally HUNDREDS of available to book for THIS COMING season in alaska!
It will be interesting to see if the plant based restaurant is successful or removed quickly.
Last Year we went to Alaska and we had a cabin and Royal Caribbean made us change it because it was only 2 of us and the room held more
I saw you have a picture of you and Tony in your intro. I would like to see you and Tony team up for more videos.
Thanks for the heads up on possible cabin changes. I had no idea that the cruise lines could change your cabin without your permission.
I wouldn’t be happy about the move since I choose my room. Nothing I could do about it though. I guess it depends on how bad the location is.
O no... No testing. Omg.. really. Canard
Appreciate and enjoy your presentations. When we book a cruise we specify our cabin and expect to get that cabin. If there is a good reason like a mechanical problem, well then okay--things happen-but to move us because they made a $$ mistake on the room--not a good thing at all.
Glad for new dining bar choices on ncl
I love that you and Tony has such a great relationship Don!
Thanks for all the helpful information
Thank you for the updates
To ensure 'authentic' Thai cuisine... NCL should hire Thai cooks !!!! The 'Asian' restaurants I've dined at on cruise ships were "duds". I don't enjoy "Americanized-Chinese" food.
They can change your cabin for whatever reason....get used to it!
Princess moved us the second week of our cruise. We had picked out our stateroom and had been in it the whole first week!!! We moved to an upgraded room but it wasnt to us. It was many floors down and not a great location.
Please come to Australia and review our cruise experiences . Go to the Great Barrier Reef and all Australia has to offer ♥️
My cousins spent extra time in Athens at a hotel before (i think) their cruise, and they loved it!
Don't like that some cruisers were given changes they don't like. Solution is starting now, HAL tell cruisers during booking steps, that this may happen (full disclosure). And this isn't a practice done solely on HAL, by the way.
If we wanted a GTY cabin, we would have booked a GTY cabin and saved hundreds of dollars per person. We CANNOT book GTY because my wife has a smoke allergy and there are cabins on the ship which which will make her seriously ill. We need to look where the smoking areas are (and the casino on some ships) to be sure smoke doesn't come in the balcony or under the door. I also check where the doors to the smoking area are because smokers don't realize that if they don't wait outside (without smoking) for a few minutes they drag smoke into the hallway.
Simple solution, only allow maximum occupancy in a cabin, 2 people only those that hold two people pop up, etc. simple.
If I book as a solo pax in a balcony that holds 2 or 3 people, and the line switches me I think I would be raising all kinds of H--.! I’ve already paid for two so they cannot get so that!
Moving cabins is like moving my paid for airplane seat. As a single person I don’t give up my paid extra for airline seat. Especially when people who didn’t pay for a seat, yes I know they didn’t pay for that middle seat, want mine. If I pay to cruise in a cabin then I better get that cabin or upgraded to an equivalent or better cabin. I’m new to cruising & I’m not really seeing the benefit of it when compared to a diving liveaboard or resort. But my travel/diving buddy LOVES cruising. So I’m giving it an honest try. But I know she won’t put up with the cruise line moving our cabin either.
Don you are great BUT when the cruise line "ask's" and you infer that the cruise line "may" move you that isfar short from "cruise lines changing cabins arbitrarily" you usually steer clear of hyperbole and hysterics. Have cruise lines actually DONE this or only asked people to move ?
NCL changed ONE of my 2 connecting balcony cabins to a different side of the ship and on a different floor. Their explanation (BS by the way) was that they changed the cabin type to one where only 1 person (and a baby if they wished) could stay in the room. I would have been allowed to rebook the room, but only for myself and not the other passenger, making my other room have 3 people and lose the "free at sea items". In the end, I rebooked to an inside across from the other balcony room (yes they refunded the cost change), but did not offer any kind of special discount or give any freebies for the trouble. I know their reason was BS because I still had the room next door (and across from that room and saw the 2 people who were in the room). Yes I booked the rooms almost a year in advance and was through a travel agent and they couldn't get NCL to fix it either. In the end, I saved money, but the frustration was terrible.
Thanks for your latest news, Don. Always good to hear new things happening in the cruise industry. Sailings need to keep clear of the Middle East. Not good that your cabin can be changed, but at least the cruise line gave some warning.
Holland has done that cabin shuffle thing for years. It's not a new thing 🤔
Change my cabin refund my money i cancel this trip and the cruuse line!
No, I would not like the cruise line changing my cabin without asking me. I take the time to pick a cabin that meets my needs/preferences. Guess I would not book a trip with a cruise line known for doing that.
Interesting news today. Thank you for the content.
If I pay to pick my cabin, unless it is an upgrade that I approve, I don't want the cruise line moving my cabin. Although, that's not the worst thing in the world.
