Tusaiwe Yana Munkhondya is a 23-year-old woman who runs three schools, an orphanage and fosters over 41 children. She is the founder of non-profit organizations "Empowering Young Mothers" and "You Are Not Alone" (YANA), that offers help and support to vulnerable people across Malawi.
Tusa got pregnant when she was 16 and is a single parent to son Jeromy, now 6. She was kicked out of her home at age 18, which inspired her to start "Empowering Young Mothers".
She says she started off by teaching her own son, who was born with special needs after noting that local schools couldn’t handle learners with special needs. Then she took in a few kids who also had special needs at her school. This turned into a passion and she now gets a lot of children and babies, those with special needs, abandoned kids, street kids and the like.
