CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is humiliated when the student body walks out on her eulogy. She realizes that Sebastian's journal has been published for all the world to see and her reputation is shattered.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In an adaptation of Choderlos de Laclos' novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe) are step-brother and step-sister living in Manhattan. With their absent parents travelling in Europe, the wealthy pair have the family penthouse to themselves as they while away their summer break before beginning senior year at a private high school. Sebastian, bad-boy lothario, has apparently slept with all the girls in town and appears numb to it all. Kathryn, who appears to be the good girl class president, is actually far more amoral and malicious than Sebastian, but maintains appearances to the contrary. When she is dumped by her boyfriend, Court Reynolds (Charlie O'Connell), for the innocent Cecile Caldwell (Selma Blair), she schemes revenge by destroying Cecile's reputation. She challenges Sebastian to deflower Cecile and transform her into a tramp to humiliate Court. Sebastian isn't as interested as Cecile -- she's spent her whole life in a Catholic girl's school and presents no challenge. The girl who has caught his attention is Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon), the new headmaster's daughter. Annette had written an article for Seventeen Magazine on her plans to stay a virgin until she finds her one true love. Kathryn makes a wager. If Sebastian fails to lure Annette into bed before the summer is over, Kathryn gets his car. If he succeeds, Sebastian gets Kathryn, whom he wants anyway. Sebastian accepts the bet, but Annette turns out to be more than either of them bargained for.

@@sbarrow06 I think the reason Anette exposed Kathryn is because Kathryn was responsible for Sebastian's death. She manipulated Ronald into attacking Sebastian. So Anette used the journal to expose her. If you notice Kathryn shows no emotion unless she's taking spiteful pleasure out of hurting others. Even when she was in the bathroom she viewed it all as one big performance. Then when she reads the journal she cries not for what she's done but because she's been caught out those tears were for herself no one else.

Kathryn should have known that the only thing that would have gotten Annette to give Sebastian another chance is if he gave her his diary. Kathryn should have known that totally exposing himself and those associated with him (including Kathryn) would be the only way that Annette could have a relationship with Sebastian. At that point she would require total transparency and that diary does just that. Kathryn should have conducted a full-on search for that diary. Otherwise she would be very possibly totally exposed.

That's not what happened. The Rolling Stones didn't own the track. Andrew Loog Oldham did. He was the Rolling Stones producer and owned the rights to their songs to produce other works. It was specifically off a symphonic rendition of Last Time that the Verve got the riff for Bittersweet Symphony. They arranged to use it and paid for it, but Andrew Loog Oldham sued contending they used more of the song than was agreed.

Call me cruel....but she got what she deserved. The problem with treating people like they're your toys to play with and then toss aside is that.......people don't like being treated like that. Absolutely perfection. This scene was such a great ending to a timeless movie. Kathryn is one of the most memorable villains in the genre, so evil and vindictive and ruthless and it was so satisfying to watch this! SMG acting really sold it, the shock turning to fear then to to anger and embarrassment and finally sadness .. all seen on her face 👏🏼 no one took this film seriously at award shows but they should have!

Sarah Michelle Gellar's character got exactly what she deserved, everyone has now discovered she's a fraud. I'm not saying she's the most evil woman in all of history but she's as low as a teenage girl can get when it comes to psychological harm. Sarah Michelle Gellar needs to play villains more often, she's proven how versatile she can be.

The Journal Of Sebastian Valmont in case you were wondering... Kathryn: There has never been a single person in human existence quite like Kathryn. Stunning to look at, and exciting to be near - cold as ice. She cares about absolutely no one but herself. This girl has elevated self-absorption into an art form. She believes in nothing and laughs in the face of sadness, faith, and sincerity. A person solely observing her and having seen the damage she’s done to so many lives would most likely classify her as evil. She scoffs at any and every type of religion, all the while manipulating others by using the idea of being religious all to her advantage. She’ll steal monetarily or emotionally from anyone who crosses her path, spend night after night in drunken, drug-induced debauchery, but lives this other life as the consummate perfect angel. She is in a sense brilliant, as evidenced by the fact that she has indeed completely fooled each person she has ever had to-except me-and she knows it. We are very similar people except I have a heart, and from time to time, actually feel emotion Kathryn does not. I have seen her break the spirits of others, cheat on anyone supposedly important to her, and all these things are done without so much as a second thought. The Bet: I don’t exactly know if I am more thrilled about the challenge I have decided with Kathryn’s “HELP,” to set for myself or just the fact that I now have something to do with my summer other than using drugs and getting laid. Make no mistake, I have no plans of relenting in either of those areas, yet it is nice to have something else with which to pass the time. The something else I speak of in this case happens to be the blatantly photogenic and equally as blatantly repressed individual, heretofore referred to as Annette Hargrove (ie lady of virtue). It began with my regular perverse perusal of porn mags at the newsstand when something caught my eye - a cover of seventeen - one of my personal favorites - promised a pious article about one “special” girl’s decision to abstain. Cecile: In all my years and adventures never have I met such an empty individual. Calling Cecile stupid is an insult to those actually qualified to be called such a thing. My level of annoyance fluctuated more quickly than my lust. Although highly !orgasmic! she enjoys the act of sex with a low end amusement can’t hide. Her incessant need to babble is outweighed only by the insipidness of what she decides to babble about

I always felt sorry for her. She had to hide who she was because she was a girl and Sebastian could do what he wanted, flaunt it and be respected. I know she was evil, but her speech to Sebastian before really was so sad. Both of them were always crying out for help. One died and the other got this.

In terms of expressing sexuality and overall demeanor, I agree, because of the pressure that society tends to place on women's behaviors. Sebastian fit closer to what society expects of manly men, but he was such a pompous, arrogant douchebag for the first half of the film that I disliked him more than Kathryn. That flipped for me a bit when he started expressing genuine feelings toward Annette. He still took advantage of a drunken Cecile though, so he's no hero. Kathryn was just stone cold, and never really showed that she cared about hurting others. Sebastian deserved to be toyed with though, for the way the movie showed him playing others.

What poetic justice this ending turned out to be! Kathryn tried to always put on a facade of being such a kind & upstanding person to make people like her - but it was just an image. As the saying goes, “Sooner or later, the chickens come home to roost.” For me, the highlight of this scene was when the camera focused on Sebastian’s face, almost as if to say that Sebastian was getting the last laugh, even in death. Now, everyone in that school sees Kathryn for the fraud that she is, and hates her. I think she was upset not so much because of what Sebastian wrote in his journal about her, but because her true nature was finally exposed. There was no going back after this.

Another take: She’s devastated because it was his ultimate betrayal of her. She was obsessed with him, in the “if I can’t have him, nobody will” way. To her Sebastian was a kindred spirit, she thought he got her. Her way of expressing affection was through torment. Yes, she is twisted. But by learning what he truly thought of her, she was finally taken down. It had nothing to do with her caring about her reputation.
