Croydon a town of some 350,000 folk (about the size of Washington DC) , on the southern edge of London, took 30 years of pressure from Croydon Council before the system was built. It opened 13 years ago and remains the only tramway in London a city of some 8 million folk.

There is a new light rail being planned for Swansea,South Wales by the Aman Valley Railway Society. Eco trams will be built and maintained in Wales for the first time. Swansea was the first to have a passenger carrying Railway in the world called the Swansea and Mumbles Railway ran from 1804 to 5th January 1960 when its owners South Wales Transport decided to close it down as it would compete against its bus service

Hey Barry, I left Croydon at the age of 21 to go to the states 30 odd years ago. I have been back twice , while making a good life for my self and family in between New Yourk USMC San Diego. your KZread has shown how so much has changed . I remember walking all those streets with my mom and dad to shop especially Surrey street. Regardless of what the bone heads have to say this is fantastic footage. my wife has never been to my home town. After watching your video she say she can't wait to go. Thanks Barry great job.

It isn't the Croydon Tramlink any more. It's now the London Tramlink. Which is a better name, because the London Borough of Croydon is not the only London Borough it serves. It also serves the London Boroughs of Sutton, Merton and Bromley, and could be extended into the London Boroughs of Lewisham, Wandsworth and Lambeth.

@jasper maguire They are called trams because in central Croydon they share space with road vehicles and pedestrians, outside Croydon the lines use old train lines.

@Tony Brimpton The problem with Monorails is that they are more expensive to construct compared to trams, plus in narrow areas it would be an eyesore, and would probably only be adequate in areas where there is enough space. Trams at least use up less space as they have the advantages both of travelling across streets and becoming railways in some stretches therefore making them cheaper.

That was a nice idea. I might do the same with our Sydney Light rail.

A monorail would have been a much safer and nicer looking option :)

When do trains become trams, and visa versa? These will never be trams to me. Railway track, platforms??
