According to the ADA, Veneers are "thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front side of teeth. They are an option for correcting stained, chipped, decayed or crooked teeth." Veneers are processed by the dental laboratory, after the teeth are minimally prepared by a dentist. Removing a small amount of enamel will allow for an adequate bulk of porcelain to be directly bonded to your teeth.A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" that is placed over the entire tooth -- to restore its shape, strength, and improve your smile. . . Crowns & veneers can both make your smile beautiful; however, the differences between these two products is vast.
A variety of dental issues help guide the dentist in their decision to choose veneers or crowns. #1 Bruxers- Those that are caught clenching or grinding their teeth throughout the day and at night are typically not indicated for veneers. Recall that veneers involve a thin layer of porcelain & a patient who grinds is more likely to fracture veneer then a crown. #2 High Carious Activity-Those that have a lot of decay & cavities that are typically indicated for crowns over veneers. Veneers often require minimal preparation. If the preparation becomes larger, a crown is better indicated. #3 Occlusion-If the dentist needs to correct how your teeth come together, crowns provide more adequate treatment then veneers. Occlusion should be stable for if placing a veneer. #4 Eroded Teeth- Veneers require a layer of enamel in order to properly bond to your teeth. If there is a lack of adequate enamel a veneer will be unable to achieve a strong bond to the tooth. Some teeth have more enamel then others which will determine whether a crown or veneer is placed. #5 Malpositioned Teeth- If the teeth are rotated in an unfavorable manner, the placement of crowns is typically better indicated then veneers. Placement of veneers can be done when minimal tooth repositioning needs to be accomplished.
Of course a visit with you local dentist will give you a better idea about whether a particular case requires a veneer or a crown. I hope this video was educational. Thanks for watching & supporting North County Cosmetic Dentistry

hello, I have teeth decay on my upper and lower teeth line and the color is yellow, do you recommend me to have veneers or crowns? note: i'm 21 and often have acid reflux

Nariman kl that’s a hard question to answer unless performing a comprehensive examination which takes into account radiographic imaging and intraoral examination. I can comment on how acid reflux can affect the teeth and things that need to be taken into consideration. Acid reflux or GERD ( gastroesophageal reflux disease ) can lead to an erosive pattern on the lingual (back) surface of your teeth. Typically, the strongest bonding occurs on enamel... this is one of the reasons why veneers are prepared conservatively because a stronger bond occurs on the enamel surface of your teeth rather then the sentinel surface of your teeth. If the too much enamel is worn down, then full coverage crowns might be the best option... if you have an adequate amount of enamel then veneers might best suit your needs! I hope this kind of helps & let me k is if you have any other questions!

Super Vivaan Any dental crown can be removed safely with the appropriate dental burs. Typically, crown removal involves a process in which you cut a slot into the dental crown. After, we utilize an instrument (curved t-bar) which is inserted into the slot & rotated to safely remove the crown in one intact piece. Not all cases are ideal. Sometimes the dentist needs to remove the crown in multiple segments to effectively clear the proposed site. I hope that answers your question :)

San Diego Dentistry thank you, does this removal inevitably hurt the tooth underneath.

Super Vivaan great question. Proper procedural technique should minimize the damage to the tooth underneath the crown. However, any time a dentist takes a drill to a tooth, there is a possibility of slightly damaging the underlying tooth. I have had dental work replaced in my mouth; I wouldn't be too concerned! I wish you the best!

San Diego Dentistry Is the veeners treatment is lifetime permanent N safe.. well! I heard its unbreakable .... really is that true?? Reply my question

Salma Ansari the lifetime for porcelain veneers varies from patient to patient. Those individuals that have a severe grinding habit and poor oral hygiene may need the veneers replaced in a shorter amount of time then those with great hygiene habit. The bonding protocol of the dentist who permanently cements those veneers in the mouth can also affect the longevity of the porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are NOT unbreakable. However, the dentist can adjust the veneers in a way that makes them last a very long time. I hope that answers some of your questions :)

Hi is it possible i take my crown off and get veneer instead?

  • @shanaynayokeil6553

you can't because since you had crowns it means your teeth been filed which leads to less teeth structure. veneers require more teeth structure. if you're not satisfied with your crowns get them replaced instead.

mihman mihman sorry for the very late reply. Crown preparation involves leaving a margin circumferentially around the proposed tooth. Further, crown preparation involves more tooth reduction then a veneer preparation. Consequently, you can not take a crown off & replace it with a veneer as stated in the previous comment. If you do not like the color, contour or shape of your crown visit your local dentist to evaluate what options you have for dental crown replacement. I wish you the best :)
