£2000 fine? That was just a slap on the wrist. For such grave negligence she should have got at least 5 years plus compensation to the victims.

I used to watch crown court with my mum when I was a child

I thought I might be the only one who could believe JG watched every penny she paid out. The barman was there for five years even though he wasn't paid well. Ditto for her general manager. I believe he was paid way less and that he let her know what needed to be done.

Why they didn't at least mention the managers of her other establishments' thoughts on her penny-pinching, or a delved into the accounts, I don't know.

Yes, but that's not meant to be the point in the English criminal system. Apart from the fact that the laws about criminal negligence were much less stringent regarding levels of responsibility and sentencing in those days, the conviction itself opened the door for civil actions which would have left her pretty much bankrupt.

The irony here is that the Judge played a jailer in the 1966 movie a Man of All Seasons. That Liverpool actor as a witness I am sure was in the Harry Enfield show playing one of these "keelm down keelm down" scouse characters. This episoide/s are actor rich and superb. £2000 for manlaughter of 17 people is unrelistic. She should have had a fine big enough requiring her to sell all her businesses and loše of licence

The owner should've been banned from running such premises in the future.

As am I, I haven't had a TV in 15 years as I refuse to pay for such low quality programming that is now offered on American television. But even in the years that the Crown Court was active, American TV had nothing of this sort to offer. Afternoon TV was nothing but a series of poorly acted, poorly produced soap operas written by 3rd rate writers. I suspect it is no better now. I must take time to say how grateful I am to PBS who first introduced me to British TV via the wonderful comedic sitcoms that was offered. In it's early years, the Discovery Channel played a British children's cartoon series -Danger Mouse-. that offered child oriented adventures but had very subtle adult innuendos interlaced within the story, (i,e, The time that Danger Mouse and his side-kick, Penfold found themselves in outer space and fell into a "pink hole".) At a time when our world is so chaotic and troubled, I need a place to mentally relax and shut the doors on reality if only for an hour at a time. Thank you, JezT for supplying this much needed repose.

Seems to be based loosely on the case of the Cocoanut Grove fire in the US...similar outcome, too. A travesty.

Finally! The decor of the courtroom in this episode is such an improvement over the awful panelling of courtrooms in previous episodes, and the ugly metal trim throughout.

Two grand for causing 17 deaths. Good grief. I used to watch Crown Court when I was off sick from school (only three channels in those days). I'm having an absolute binge of these old episodes. Some very talented actors involved. Thanks for the uploads.

At first l didn’t recognize Elizabeth Spriggs (defendant Mrs Godfrey). She was a recurrently fun character player (notably Charles Dickens’ Sairy Gamp) & often justly described as “formidable” in her acting skill. RIP

She throws a lot of blame on poor Paul..

That's what caused the fire, wart remover, horrible dangerous stuff, blows you up.

The £2000 fine would be just under £10,000 today (2023).

Quite enjoyed this episode. Obviously influenced by the events of Woolworths Fire in Manchester.

2000 pounds and 17 dead? British justice, fly kite, mate.

It's not the Forman who looks like Tony Blackburn.it's the one next to him .

Yet another fine example of brilliant acting and thought-provoking scriptwriting, thanks Jez! But I could hardly believe the verdict!! Neither of them were taking their jobs seriously, negligence all round. *** SPOILER ALERT!!*** Why on earth was Flood found not guilty??? If Godfrey was half as stingy as witnesses made out, he should have kicked up a fuss! He could at least have thrown the fan away! if Godfrey inherited the club unwillingly after her husband's death, why on earth didn't she sell it? To keep it yet abdicate responsibility - something she was not unfamiliar with - to such an extent was unforgivable. Would £2000 have made such a dent in her pocket? I suggest not! They should both have been locked up and the key thrown away!! A few hundred hours of community service would have done them both good! Our wonderful British justice, held up as an example to the world... God save us!

Totally agree. Flood was as guilty as Godfrey. Quite surprised to see he was not found guilty. I think it was his duty to see if the exit doors are unlocked on the first floor as well as the gound floor; imho he was lying. Even if he had delegated that task to the head barmen of the club , it was his duty as a general manager to check on him.

The people say Janet was cheap, but rich people don't get rich by spending money like water.]

Think its the Forman.who looks like Blackburn.

He played a Juror in an episode of another 'Court' series, when he said to the Judge, (Robert Morley), "I thought this was a Court of Justice", Morley smugly replied, "It is a Court of Law." The Juror then thanked the Judge for 'pointing out the DIFFERENCE'. Morley's face was a picture.

I was appalled at the final verdict but the "sentence" was disgusting! They both should have had to serve prison time being allowed out twice a week to work in an establishment similar to the one they were totally responsible for as wait staff or kitchen help.

No, it was 100% the owner’s fault and no one else’s. The manager reported everything and whilst working there was only so much he could do. 100% innocent. Absolutely no one else’s fault but the owner. This is how health and safety legislation officially operates now and quite rightly so. Yes, the sentence was farcical even for those times. She should get at least 5 years plus victims compensation.

The verdict was correct in my opinion but the sentence was outrageous and the judge should rightly have been targeted by the media for it.

Then you must be rather simple. She was legally responsible as the proprietor and had repeatedly refused to allow improvements and safety measures which would ensure that the premises were made more safe.
