Crown Court - Dead Drunk (1975)

Ойын-сауық

Nancy Church (Pat Heywood), assistant warden for the rehabilitation of ex-alcoholics, she is accused of the murder of Joseph Plowman, one of the residents.
Pat Heywood appeared in many shows, but perhaps most noticeably in shows such as Within These Walls (Remand Wing) and Hammer House of Horror (Rude Awakening). Meg Wynn Owen, here as Celia Plowman, is best known as Hazel Bellamy in "Upstairs, Downstairs". Prosecuting counsel is played again by William Simons, known perhaps for his appearances in Heartbeat. William Russell (Edward Buckland) starred previously as the companion opposite William Hartnell's Doctor in "Doctor Who". Patrick Barr (Doctor Bardon) also appeared in Doctor Who, in the classic adventure "The Moonbase" opposite Patrick Troughton, but was also known for his film work in "The Dam Busters" and "The Lavender Hill Mob". Ron Pember appeared in most TV series in the 60's and 70's such as the sci-fi show "UFO" and also "Secret Army".

Like so many others watching these episodes, I remember lunchtimes in the early 70's watching these on Anglia TV. Later in the afternoon were such gems as 'Romper Room' with Miss Rosalyn and of course 'Crossroads' with dopey Benny. Must've spent more time dodging school than I realised.

Not quite satisfied with the verdict. She did kill the man, so the jury should at least have been able to choose between manslaughter 1 & 2 & acquittal. Not enough facts presented to make the Crown's case.

If they were to charge her with involuntary manslaughter then it would have to be argued that her holding the knife was reckless or gross negligence which might be difficult if she claimed she was being violently attacked. I’m not 100% sure but either way it’s just a enjoyable show 😊

A "trained" person, offers a person who had "supposedly" been drinking an alcoholic beverage he would not normally consume, "something" and went to get it from the medicine cabinet. That remark should have been a red flag because alcohol, medication, and a distraught recovering alcoholic do not mix. Never saw the end of the episode because of that incident.

The series was set in the present day at the time, but, presented today, would seem like a period drama set in the 70s or 80s, and reflected the language of the era - people did swear back then and it was reflected in the script - judges often told witnesses off for swearing - unless they were quoting what someone said!
