Crossing Canada to US Border By Car (2022 UPDATE)

The Canadian border opened back up to US citizens late last year. This video documents my experience of crossing the border into the United States (USA) from Ontario, Canada by car. All that is required to enter the the United states from Canada as a US citizen is simply a US passport. Crossing the US Canada border by car is a pretty simple procedure as of today. No proof of a negative covid test is required for US citizens re-entering the country by land.
On this day, the border patrol did ask me to pull my vehicle into an X-Ray scanner for further inspection. Something I have never come across while crossing the border. None the less, there were no issues and I made it back home safely.

I agree. Several years ago, I crossed from Sarnia into Port Huron. On seeing my IL plates he asked if I was a Cub or a White Sox fan. He was very polite and told me to have a safe trip.home, but there may have been a purpose in that politeness. Still, officers like him are far more pleasant than these guys/women who are power tripping. The Thanks giving a few months before COVID, I was crossing into Canada at Niagara Falls. I was driving a rental car with Ohio plates. So when he tried to confirm I was from Ohio, I told him I was from Illinois and driving a rental car. He just couldn't seem to understand why I had a rental car, He sent me to secondary inspection. The officer could have just asked to see the rental contract. I rented the car because my car was getting kind of old. The guy doing the search was fine. Probably if the car had IL plates he wouldn't have known the car was a rental because he would have wanted to confirm I was from IL and I would have said yes and made no further comment. On my reentry to the US at Port Huron several hours later the officer was fine, asking just the standard required questions.

@@stephenkammerling9479 I know your comment is a year+ old, but I just did that same crossing, with specialty IL plates but they clearly say IL.... She had a confused look on her face and asked "Are those Wisconsin plates?" Obviously to trip me up as well. In either direction, the CA customs and US customs were polite and quick, took less than 30 seconds each.

Also, we went up with a buddy in his old car & got searched again coming back into states. They didn't use scans back then. What else is funny, one time i took a friend up there from the UK & the U.S. officer asked us to state our citizenship & I said "United States" and my buddy said "United..." and before he could declare Kingdom, the officer just talked over him & hurried us along. 😄

Is this really the sentiment? The absolute wish of separating Canadian to US life? Just going on the other side to relax is already suspicious? That's still hard to swallow how this was able to become like this. In the 1980ies you just went on the other side with no hassles. And in Europe that's the standard. Sometimes they do checks but inside the Schengen area you'll just drive through.

Just to let you know the reason why they scanned your vehicle is because your reason for entry into Canada is not business matter professional business. details are important ! if you would have said your where taking pictures for article or work you most likely wouldn't have got scanned. this being said it is still under the suspicion of the officer that does the interview. the US customs does use "profiling" based tactics on race, or skin color, personal appearance, even lingos and language, and apparel or clothing worn, and controversial skin tattoos. and even thou these reason will never be on the citation because of discrimatory action. if they wanted to detain or even turn you back is at the discretion of the officer. these make the lines of waiting faster. consider yourself lucky you got a decent officer they normally aint that nice. I cross the Windsor boarder often get pulled in because of my long hair. i have never been convicted of crimes, i dont do drugs or even drink but yet still have to go through this mess every time. and also , remember your in a different country laws are different in every country.

The CBP agents don't know a person who they see from Adam. Whatever answer you provide to an agent is up to their discretion as to whether or not you get sent on your way or over to secondary, and it really does raise a red flag when you tell them you were over there for only a couple of hours not visiting family ot friends, or even shopping, dining or visiting the casino. All they want to make sure is that you were not really trying to smuggle anything illegal across.

It does raise a red flag. What were you REALLY doing in Canada during those 2 hours that you claimed to say you were there? Did you go over there to take pictures of the scenery or did you do a drug exchange? The reason the first officer had sent the car over to secondary was to make sure that he wasn't hiding drugs or large sums of cash (possibly money made from a drug sale).

Here is my take on this. CBP officers have full right as to whether they send you on your way or over to secondary inspection. Their job is to keep our border safe and to ensure that is happening, they check EVERYONE, whether you are a US citizen or not. Anytime you encounter them, always be polite, courteous, honest and give them your full cooperation. It can make a big difference whether or not you get sent on your way or over to an area where you will be greeted by some nice officers who will gladly escort you into a room where you will be given the 3rd degree treatment (and that experience isn't always so pleasant...no matter how long the process is, they WILL do whatever, however long it takes to make sure that you are here in the US legally and that you haven't or not about to commit any crimes). Just remember this, CBP officers are highly trained on what they need to look for and if something isn't right to them, they won't waste any of their time to further investigate. Don't EVER lie to them because they can tell off the bat if you are doing that (they are trained on what to look for when you respond to their questions...body language, eye contact, profuse sweating, extreme nervousness, stuttering, to name a few). Honesty is the best policy. They WILL verify everything you tell them. Always tell them what you have on you. They do have ways of checking and if they find something that you didn't tell them, they will be very interested in finding out how you got it and why you didn't bother to tell them. If you feel that your rights are being violated when it comes to search and being interrogated, then do yourself a favor and don't cross the border.
