Cross Country Coaching Advice for New Coaches or Teams. How to Approach XC Season

Every coach approaches cross country with a different strategy - here are some important things we like to consider when approaching a cross country season and planning how we will approach training different groups of runners we may see, especially with an underdeveloped team.

I love the Lobos shirt! I coach High School track and XC in New Mexico. I'm a brand new head XC coach this upcoming season. I'm also the head track coach at the same school, I just took over the program because the previous XC coach left, and they couldn't find anyone to cover it. I coach the sprinters in track, so when I hear strength training I think of resistance exercises in the weight room. so, what would a strength session look like for an XC athlete, other than hills?

Sorry I took so long to see this! (Even though we said we'd be on top of it - I ended up focusing on my other channel more) My bible in the training world is Running With Lydiard... however there is a lot of new science out that isn't considered in that book. Quick tips: End most easy runs with drills and strides. Skip Drills, Light Plyometrics, and range of motion drills will be important for growing athletes. Also focus on foot-strike, especially with bulkier runners Don't be afraid to let them build up mileage. Have one day a week where their only goal is time on feet. If that's 30 minutes the first week of practice (play by ear with your athletes) try to build that up to 50+ minutes. Your better runners will be able to run the whole time and start getting real mileage which will get them ahead for High School, and your other athletes will still benefit from moving (running or walking) for that amount of time.

Thanks for the video! I too am a first year assistant coach. You mention trying to keep it fun, but a lot of students see running more as a punishment. What are some fun things that you have done to keep your practice less like a punishment? I have heard of including running sports like soccer and ultimate Frisbee, would you suggest that?

From my experience it is difficult to include games during season without taking aways from the focus of training. Those are great summer (off-season) activities to build team comradery, but in season the focus should be on running. Being genuine with the athletes goes a long way - and allowing them to complete tasks on their own with team leaders rather than coach-instruction helps a lot. For weekend runs, something as simple as doing a run that finishes at a coffee or donut shop helps make the run feel a lot more rewarding and the kids love it.

I think the big mistake that coaches make is assuming that keeping it fun for students means playing games all the time. For my runners maybe some type of fun competition a couple of times on the season but I had a ton of soccer players so for "cross training" they could play a toned down game of soccer. We always stop coming home from home meets to eat or take food for a picnic. We had a cookout, runathon lockin at the high school. We do pregame meals either at a restaurant of one of the kids houses. End of season pool party, etc. etc.
