Crosley Stack-O-Matic: The last record changers ever made (and a BSR clone)

Ғылым және технология

In the mid-2000s, Crosley sold the stack-o-matic, their ONLY record changer they ever made, and the very last record changer ever made.
After years of claims that you can use a BSR 45rpm adapter, I decided to dig deeper into the Stack-O-Matic changer's design, only to find out that the Stack-O-Matic is in fact, a BSR clone. Specifically, the C197 series, only updated so that its an all-plastic base, uses a belt-driven mechanism instead of an idler drive mechanism, but the core changing mechanism remained unchanged.
Many BSR parts ARE interchangeable with the Stack-O-Matic, and the mounting hole positions are identical to that of a BSR.

Snooping through the history of Crosley's web site via the Internet Archive, it appears that the Stack-O-Matic models were introduced in 2004 and discontinued in 2010.

Actually, make that 2003 as the year of introduction -- scroll down and you'll see it featured in their company history: web.archive.org/web/20130402152431/www.crosleyradio.com:80/about.html

I purchased a Crosley Stack-O-Matic Travelers recover player for my parents for Christmas. It really hurt me when Crosley stopped making them. Why? Anyway, my parents have gone to heaven and now it’s mine. All mine needs is a BSR 45 adapter. My mom lost it. I still love her though.

Nice video. I just got one of those models but need to replace a broken piece attached to the back of the case, where the power cord adapter connects. Do you or someone else know where to get that part? Thank you.

I've had my Stack-O-Matic for 15 years and finally needed to replace the belt. When I went to put the platter back on, it is so tight it won't turn. I did it just like you did...what the heck did I screw up? Even with the belt off it is so stuck. I've tried it dry and with lithium grease, no difference. I'm stumped. Any Ideas?

The BSR plays faster, I think the 'stack-o-matic' is closer to the correct speed. (one small benefit, I guess..)

BSRs typically run slightly fast, and the way they are driven (idler wheel from an AC motor), it's almost impossible to adjust them. The Crosley's BSR clone looks like it's belt driven from a DC motor, which IS adjustable.

@@xaenon You can slow down a BSR by holding a flat file against the running motor, but be carefull not to over do it, check with the strobe disc until it is just over, a dash/rpm fast will be fine

Great video! I found one at a thrift store not too long ago. I got it working and have replaced the speakers and upgraded the needle. Curious about the amplifier board you replaced. What was it and is it difficult to install? Thank you.

hey navavids, I have a crosley stackomatic and would love to switch out the speakers to external...do you know how to do that?

@@laurenbeck6582I imagine you could detatch the speaker wires, splice longer wire and run them out through the case. That's not a very elegant looking solution though. Or somehow install speaker terminals on the side to plug in to. I'm not much of an expert though. Good luck! 😎

@@laurenbeck6582 the reason I'm curious about new amplifier board is even after I upgraded the speakers it still isn't "full" sounding as I'd like. Definite improvement! But keep in mind there's a limit still. The original speakers are like 2-3watts. The ones I put in are a 10 watt "full range" set of old Realistic book shelf speakers that should improve bass, etc.. I added some damping material to the enclosure too. Maybe hooking up to amplified speakers would work. Good luck!

Also, a buddy of mine who remembers these type players from the 50s and 60s said my upgrade was pretty decent sounding in comparison to most units of the day, but not top of line. I guess my point is there is a limit to how good this will sound. Not sure what expectations are. 🙂

“Radiotvphononut” has two of the Stack-O-Matic’s, and they are the last record changers ever produced for Crosley until they discontinued by 2010. These two are the worst ones, because he made a video of those two. He called themselves “Junk-O-Matic” instead.

These decks are and look cheap I think I will stick with the real BSR. BSR's were cheap in their day but they can all be serviced I have been working on them for over 40 years and never found one that was worn out and unusable those Crosley mechs look cheap and nasty and won't survive like the old BSR, Garrard and Collaro units I is a fact the best changers were British made (Collaro's were later made by Magnavox) I did enjoy watching your video and found it intersting Top one

I too, used to work on BSR & Garrard auto-changers (mainly BSR) 40 or so years ago, when I worked in a factory making record players and the then popular - "Music-centres" . I used to like the BSR product to work on, they were simple, rugged & reliable units. The assembly quality could be a little erratic sometimes, but when you think that BSR were an extremely high volume production manufacturer producing anything up to two and a half thousand auto-changers per day on each production line, assembly speed was essential. This lead to the rather unwarranted reputation (in my opinion), that they were "thrown together, not built". I have found over recent years that the main problem nowadays, is that after 40 years or so, the Grease they used has dried out and gone hard, causing stiffness or complete seizure of parts like the Turntable and sometimes, the cam and 'Cycling' mechanism. One thing I do like about BSR was that from the late 1950's through to the 1980's they used the same 'Idler Wheel' for all their 'wheel' driven 'changers'. You can still get replacements of "new old stock" Idler wheels should you need one, but normally, if the rubber is in a good condition, but the running surface is shiny and slipping, it can be made like new again by using a clean lint free cloth with a little 'Methylated spirit' on it and gently rubbing the shiny running surface until it regains the matt looking finish it originally had. Do the same with the motor step pulley and turntable drive rim. It will drive like new again !
