My wife and I love this song. We had plans to retire on a sailboat. Unfortunately, she had a heart attack in her sleep, January 16. She lived on a respirator in ICU until January 19, 2023. I had to make the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make in my life. Nicole, until we sail again. I love you. ❤

When I was in the US Navy I crossed the Atlantic 6 times (3 Mediterranean deployments of 6+ months each). I know very well what it's like to stand the "midnight watch." Something that civilians might not be aware of is that at night US Navy ships go dark. Only a few red lights are allowed on the exterior of the ship. When there is a new moon, and without the ambient light from cities and land, the magnitude of the darkness is stunning. On nights like that one of my favorite things to do was to grab a pillow and blanket and go out on the helo deck and just stare at the stars. It seemed like a million stars and planets. Sometimes I would spot a satellite silently crossing the sky. This song makes me recall the good times from those deployments. When you spend a lot of time at sea it is amazing what you will see. I've seen numerous whales, hundreds of dolphins, and thousands of flying fish dancing across the surface like they were choreographed. One time I saw the sea lit with phosphorescence across an area at least a square mile. Those moments changed me forever. They made me aware of how microscopically small we are in the universe. They made me respect nature and realize that it is OUR responsibility to take care of our blue planet so that our children's children can see the same wonders I've seen.

Very well put young lady. Ever notice there are many songs that have to do with water, or the sea, or ships, or boats? Many songs are geared toward the sea and they are always good songs that make you reflect. This song is a masterpiece and expresses that sentiment exactly. I love it when young people appreciate the classic music from the 50's 60's and 70's. It gives us all hope and keeps this era alive.

I read all the comments left here for this song and it bought me to tears. I first saw The Southern Cross while sailing to Panama many years ago. It touched me just like it did many a sailor my age who grew up listening to CSYN. I remember being on dog watch (the hours just before sunrise) and reminiscing about my youth and the gifts of music we enjoyed in the early 70's. While in Panama, I made my way down to the San Blas Islands, a group of 400 islands belonging to the Kuna Indians. I lived among them on my sailboat Last Laugh for many years, learning their culture and each one by name. It was the pinnacle decade capping a lifetime of sailing. Now I'm a broken old man, scarred by a stroke and years of too much sun. I recall seeing the Southern Cross for the last time. I broke down crying in the cockpit alone. I knew I'd never go to sea again. I'm crying just typing this. Mother Ocean kept me safe for a lifetime. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young kept me entertained. I have lived a blessed life.

Wow what an interesting life. I am a month shy of 73, "and all that I have left...is... and music is her name." I used to have a lot and lived a lot. I gambled too much, and played the stocks. Now I am very much in pain continuously, and the doctors are too stupid to figure out what is wrong. Now I'm a broken man (sorry to plagiarize your words), but it just fits. I live in Florida, for the past 30 plus years, and love the ocean. Never had a schooner (LOL) or sailboat, but the Lake Worth pier is only 7 miles from me,,, so I go there and ponder my life and my relevance to it. What will happen in the end. For me the sooner the better, I am having a very hard time being in pain all the time. I did the 'stuff' we all did in the 60's, but not into that now, and the oxycodone does nothing.... and you have to go through hell to get it legally. Man, I am with you and understand your feelings. Too bad we don't live close to each other, you'd be my best friend!

That was excellent. I've never seen the southern cross but I can imagine it. God placed those stars in the sky that way for a reason. Obviously. "What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten." And "the promise of the coming day." Did they forget the last verse or was I daydreaming? "We cheated and we lied and we tested, we never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do. You will survive being bested; somebody fine will come along and make me forget about loving you and the southern cross." CSN. Thank you ❤️

@@jacksonmorganfroghin4815 The Southern Cross becomes visible around Nicaragua going south. It's a four star constellation of a cross tilted over to the right around 20⁰ more or less. It's importance and reverence comes from this: If you draw a line from the top of the cross down the bottom of the cross, then extend the line to the horizon, where they intersect is precisely Due South. It can get tiresome sailing on a passage, seeing nothing for days. When you see the Cross, it's as if you finally got your bearings after being lost deep in the woods!

If you didn't know, the Southern Cross is a constellation that sailors use in the southern hemisphere to find the pole, so they can calculate their latitude. There is no southern "polaris" or any star directly at the pole, but the southern cross constellation points directly to it. If you line up the direction of the "bottom/Jesus' feet" of the southern cross and make a perpendicular line from the middle of two bright "pointer stars" you can find the celestial pole using a sextant (a weird, complicated telescope with a swing thingy, which is so important to celestial navigation that it has its own constellation named after it and without it the Americas would probably never be found by Europeans until the 1800's-1900's), and therefore your latitude. If you ever find yourself below the equator, such as in Australia or South Africa, look for the southern cross! Edit: Also, if you ever get lost in the night without a compass, go towards the big dipper or Casseopeia (a bright W-shaped constellation) to go north in the northern hemisphere, and if you are in the southern hemisphere, go towards the little and bright cross in the sky (there is sometimes another, larger and dimmer cross called Cygnus in the southern skies, it does not point towards the south). You can also use these constellations to find landmasses, say, if you are lost sailing off the East Coast of the USA, sail to the left of the big dipper to return to civilization, though you will likely not end up exactly where you started. This is how slaves escaped to Canada and the Northern USA, they ran towards the big dipper. This information was actually passed on by a famous song, named "Follow the Drinking Gourd," which slaves often sung while working to relay information about celestial navigation to freedom. (I decided to add this here since people seem to like the navigation stuff). Edit 2: Here's something I found that explains it better: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qJ54xK-ej7GaftY.html

Even though this is labeled as a CS&N album, David Crosby didn't play much of a part on it. It was recorded as a Stills & Nash album, but the studio refused to release it if it wasn't a CS&N album. This was during the worst of his drug addiction, and he was not much use in recording. But they managed to get a little out of him. They used an older track Crosby has recorded a year earlier and added their vocal harmonies to it, and that was enough to make the studio happy. PS. On this song, the harmonies are provided by Tim Schmidt and Art Garfunkel.

Russ Ramey you lost it when you became old and failed to relate to new sounds, new grooves, its out there you have to look and feel. One either stays limber, green and embraces the living or becomes brittle, dry and embraces death. Each generation states they had best sound, life, morals, values. Those who came before are old fashioned, those who follow have no clue. Rock is not dead, its alive in Ohio, Nebraska, Seattle, Austin, Nashville, every where I have been some body is pouring their heart out. Just listen man

***** I didn't mention age, which has nothing to do with anything other than the physiological age of your body. I said he was old, he fails to relate and feel the new sounds and grooves. My beloved Grandmother could find the groove that Diesel Boy threw out in his deep house beats, rode along to the sound of the Beastie Boys and jammed with Red Hot. My favorite genre was laid down on wax by three to four generations past. I found it by looking, and feel it cause its real. Your mind and taste are either open, supple and flexible like a new borne babe, or dry, brittle and old like a dead tree... Keep up or get passed, live in the now, not the was, the golden years never were, but have always been.

Doesn't matter what you cross the southern in rather it is a 20 footer or a 26 footer or 120 footer...thing is is you crossed it. Be proud because few do out of millions on this planet.

. . . Think about how many times I have fallen, spirits are using me, larger voice is calling . . . This song gets to the heart of the matter. I first saw Stephen Stills when he was with the Buffalo Springfield, back in the 60's in California. This is when you could go backstage or just sit on the dock in the back where the bands would come in. We got to meet everybody. It was the Swing Auditorium where all the up and coming bands would play. At this particular concert, The Doors were the opening band - they had not even released their first album. Who knew all these folks would become legends. I remember sitting on the stage along with many others and we were just hanging out talking to everyone and The Doors were setting up their own drums and guitars. Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furray(sp?) all came out and sat down with us to listen to this new band "The Doors". I am so glad I grew up in this time of change and timeless music.

When their music was their language & their message ... & they devoted themselves to it ... & it showed... focused on their genius .. not diluted by diversions into political stuff .. just pure magic.
