If it’s a Stills song about a past, gone relationship, it’s about Judy Collins.

Brah, I listen to this version of this song A LOT. It really touches my heart and soul. I am going through a tough time right now and music helps me through the turmoil, pain, anguish, you get it. Music helps me cry... and laugh. Right now, I want to cry so I am trying this og cush mixed with this strawberry stuff listening to some real powerful music to sooth my soul. Your comment touched me. I don't know you. Never will. However, in at least one aspect we are on the same path. Peace, my friend

Robert Stroud Hope you are Alright Robert I cried a lot too this song and this is the reason people write songs to get through...times of trouble, loss, pain all that but you know there will be better days man you gotta have a WILL TO LIVE a WANT and you will find it or it will find you if it hasn't already DESTINY it's REAL and we all got one so keep smoking it helps with CONTEMPLATION DIG? you take care of yourself and then that's how you can take care of someone else or something else music is my religion brother it's definitely peace of mind for me it helps so much alotta luck too you my friend I am here with you we all are on this planet together most think they are here alone I have felt it before but life is pretty cliche bro like where there's a will there's a way or if I knew then what I know now, I would be doing the same as you my friend smoking/thinking/contemplating the next move we all would ppl of the world forget so much and push stuff this way and that way put stuff where they think it belongs you know where you belong and be true to your own spirit always I appreciate what you said in your reply my life ain't all good all the time either and what you said believe it or not its 3:15am and I am still up bout to go to sleep and wanted to say thanks it made me smile to know I could help someone a little by commenting on a song about friends being there for each other again you take care thanks Robert.

I'm good. I mean, I have things going on but it's all just life bullshit. Nothing stops people getting older, on and on. Complain? Ha! For what? I know of at least 10, 15, people without even thinking, who have REAL problems.Funny, it's 330am and I can't sleep. I'll be able to soon. Got up and sampled the new sack of goods and put some feel good on.You said something that touched me. Music is a religion. SO TRUE! When I was 3, my mom said she'd play Porter Wagner's Skid Row Joe and I'd cry. When it was over she says I'd beg her to play it again and promise not to cry butould. Funny. Music has always touched me.Music hassaved my life. I have always carried lyrics and riffs and and poems, you get it? Peace

Dude, the studio version has amazing guitar leads that partial MAKE the song - not to mention the great drum groove that changes feels from chorus to verse. No way bro, the studio version blows this away, as beautiful as it is...tough statement to make, but as a drummer I have to defend the American Dream CD version. That whole record is amazing, Choose That Girl, American Dream, etc.....great stuff.

Cool song...But just to be technically correct, this isn't CSN&Y. Although Stephen Stills wrote this song with help from Neil Young, this is a live version from a 1989 CSN appearance at the United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York, in which Neil had no part of. On this version, which is in the CSN box set, the personnel consists of just Stills (piano, vocals) & Nash (sticks, vocals). So, this isn't CSN&Y, or even really CSN, but more accurately S&N. The original studio version is on the CSN&Y album, American Dream, which was released in 1988.

The reason they played the UN Assembly Hall was because they were celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall. They left NYC for Berlin, played for 1,000 fans in front of the Brandenburg Gate, then flew back and played the Cow Palace for the SF Earthquake Relief Concert a couple days later...

OPENING ACT: MICHAEL HEDGES "It was broadcast live on WKRQ in New York with Michael Hedges performing before CSN. It was one of the most incredible concerts I have ever listened to. " "I was at this concert back in 1989, when Crosby, Stills and Nash performed at the United Nations. That was a historic event and I agree one of the best concerts ever. All the incredible energy that is present in the General Assembly Hall combined with the live music created an unforgettable event. " “I saw Michael Hedges perform with CSN at, of all places, the United Nations back in 1989. Dude did stuff with the guitar -- ACOUSTIC guitar -- he could get the strangest, most original sounds -- organically -- out of the instrument. If I knew what genius was, I'd guess he was one.”

In retrospect this is a nice song, but American Dream was the most disappointing CSNY album ever. Maybe it was the timing relative to their careers and public taste. Maybe it was the order of the tracks. Maybe there were just too many "filler" tracks on the album. But there aren't really very many memorable songs on it. Probably the biggest disappointment was that Neil didn't really contribute a single memorable song. That turned it into just another CSN album with some filler. Neil seemed to be saving his best material for Freedom and Ragged Glory, which amounted to a "career renaissance" for him and still stand as "top ten" Neil Young albums.

Nah I couldn't disagree more. American Dream was a fantastic album & it had some of their very best songs. Especially "Compass" & "Got it Made". I also thought Neil contributed some fine songs, the best being "Feel Your Love". I think the only reason some ppl didn't like it was because the group started to go Pop/Rock & the older fans didn't like the change. Doesn't make it a bad album though.

It's main problems are the production/instrument choices (those synths suck) and too many songs. I think Neil's tunes were standouts, if lightweight. This Old House has good lyrics and chorus, Name of Love has a certain nobility to it, Feel Your Love is pretty, and the title track would be great without the stupid synth riff and more of the rocking middle section.

Not a great album, way too slick and over-produced, but it did have some nice songs like "Compass" and "Got It Made". And "Feel Your Love" is a great Neil tune. I do agree about Neil saving his best stuff for himself, which was a smart move on his account.

American Dream and Name of Love are great songs, just listen to the versions from the 1987 Crazy Horse tours. American Dream as an album doesn't work - the magic from 1970 was still gone, they sound disconnected and the production is awful.
