Hippo obviously, there's a reason why they're one of the only animals in their habitat crocodiles don't mess with.

Nile crocodiles are afraid of Hippos, they instantly panic whenever they get near it. Crocodiles are not even afraid of Lions, but will run away immediately from Hippos once it show some aggression.

Crocodile respect lions & vice versa, crocodile know how ruthless and dangerous a lion is and same goes for lions. Hippos on the other hand is very dangerous to both these animals

Crocs are not afraid of land based animals. They will attack any of them if they are near or in the water. Crocs know they don't have that advantage against Hippos who are semi aquatic like them.

Gustave is a BEAST. A ranger did witness him takin out an adult hippo. Dunno what sort of adult hippo it was though. Was it an elderly cow? Or a dominant bull.... if he took down a big bull hippo in his prime then Gustave is truly the king of crocs... maybe even the savanna king Krys would bow down to him

Crocodiles have a stronger bite force, but the hippo's giant tusks deal more damage. Regardless, you can tell that crocodiles lose encounters based on how they keep their distance from adult hippos. Nile crocodiles survived by seeing the hippos as something that was too big to take on, so they avoided provoking them. I have seen MANY animal documentaries that feature footage of hippos and crocodiles, and in all of them, the crocodiles stay away from the adult hippos. The exception is if there is a hippo carcass. This can attract a large enough group of the ordinarily solitary crocodiles to even frighten away a hippo herd.

This makes me wonder about the truth of the Gustave story. I'm more interested on the question, "Can an American or Central American (they seem to grow to the biggest size in the Americas) survive in Africa?" Everyone seems to avoid answering this.

it is more likely that a hippo can take down smaller crocodiles, but huge males are quite aggressive, they have a stronger bite force than a hippo, and they might get a chance, but it is quite rare for a crocodile and a hippo to fight

your average nile croc wouldn't stand a chance but the legendary/infamous nile croc gustav was 1 of the few croc known to be able to successfully prey upon adult hippos as he was exceptionally large even among other big nile crocs with his size estimated to be around 20 feet in length and over 2,000 pounds so his bite force was insane (note your average 15-16 foot nile croc has a 7000+ psi bite force so imagine a 20 foot one like gustav)

@@HkFinn83 gustav was documented successfully attacking and killing adult hippos (most likely female hippos), gustav was believed to be 19-20 feet long (possibly larger) and around 2,000 pounds, even 15-16 foot crocodiles have been documented being able to bite down with up to 3,700 psi so imagine how devastating gustavs bite was/is, he would just need to sneak,ambush the hippo and bite 1 of it's legs before the hippo could react and the hippo would be crippled from that bite as it's leg would be crushed and/or torn off which is fatal to a animal as big as a hippo.

@Elvin Mah even gustav wasn't able to down a grown elephant, as big as he is/was your average sized or bigger adult female elephant has no natural predators aside from humans and any sized adult male elephant is the same, now there are documented cases of 20-30 member lion prides successfully attacking and killing young/small adult females but that is rare, even those giant lion prides i mentioned almost exclusively target baby/adolescent elephants and will only try a small adult female if they re starving/desperate and there's nothing smaller for them to attack, anything bigger and the lions don't even bother trying bc they know there is no chance in taking it down, as for crocodiles other noticeably large crocodiles have attacked adult elephants but so far the elephant either fended off the crocodile(s) with out much effort or ended up getting trampled to death by the now pissed off adult elephant, there has never been a documented case of any crocodile or even a group of crocodiles successfully attacking and killing a adult elephant.

@Elvin Mah every video i have seen of a crocodile attacking a adult elephant that was either drinking on the riverbank or swimming ended with the elephant instantly escaping or getting pissed off and trampling/rag dolling the crocodile until the crocodile either escaped the elephants wrath or was trampled to death

Although crocodiles have a more powerful bite than hippos, it would be impossible for the croc to open its mouth wide enough to get a purchase on that massive, round body that the hippo has. Plus, the croc isn't even remotely in the weight class of the hippo. Four tonnes against 1.5 tonnes. A tank against a jeep.

There isn't a lot of video of hippos killing because the other animals know to not step to hippos. Most croc kills are under water. There is video of one of the 2 or 3 huge Crocs where it seems like the hippos know they shouldn't provoke. That croc is huge, they say villagers think it's at least 60 or a bigger number. It's been shot, it doesn't fall for traps made by humans

We already knew the hippo would win. There's sooo many videos online of hippos thrashing and killing crocodiles (even big crocs). They are MASSIVE and very aggressive when angry. Hippo defeats the crocodile 99.99% of the time

tempered* and to be fair rhinos are essentially blind and attack and charge everything including adult hippos. you can’t claim its the most short tempered animal when it shares climates with things like the honey badger (which picks fights with animals 5x its size)

A hippo would win easily. Even if it was one on one a hippo would easily destroy a crocodile. But hippos travel in groups, so it would be a crocodile versus numerous hippos. The hippopotamus has one threat: humans.
