Edit: A few of you have had issues with this hat coming out too big. I did about 5 of these before I did this video using the yarn in the video and ILTY by Hobby Lobby. They came out just fine. I believe it depends on the yarn being used. If you are finding this to be a problem as well, someone suggested using a 4 mm hook for the HDC rounds and a 5 mm hook for the rest of the hat. I tried this out with Caron one pound and a red heart acrylic medium worsted weight yarn and it came out perfect. I hope this helps.
Below is a link to a site that allows you to find comparable yarn. It's a great tool to use when doing any project. 😉

These beanies are so popular right now. They are cute, quick, and easy to throw your hair up and still stay warm. Also called a messy mom bun beanie.
This is my own pattern and I really like how the holes let air into your hat so you can wear this all day without sweating and without having to take it off.
I hope you like this pattern and find my video helpful to you.
This video is following the bow video I did. This is the messy bun beanie and if you would like to make the bow. Here is the link

The squeekie noise you hear from the yarn on the hook can also be the tension from the yarn. This is an awesome video, you're very clear on your instructions. My beanie didn't come out as tight as yours but it still looks beautiful. Thank you.
Just made this using Caron Simply Soft and a 5mm hook throughout and it's lovely! Thank you 😊
Thank you so much for the detailed video...the hat for my son’s girlfriend turned out great!
Hi, made this messy bun hat turned out great. I crocheted a center part to go around the bow instead of wrapping the yarn around it. Turned out Great. Great tutorial. Thank you.💖
Your explanation was very accurate and accented your words very clear which helped me to clearly hear your directions.. thank you so much ! I learned how to crochet from my grandmother but when she passed I dropped crocheting for many years. I did not have anyone to help guide me when I made mistakes!! You made it so easy that I hope that I can pass down to my daughters.. ❤️

marianne granger wow! That is the exact same thing that happened to me. My grandma taught me and when she passed away I wanted to carry this with me but I had forgot everything. Great hat! Nice teaching! If there is no written pattern, I just play the tutorial and write up the instructions myself...pausing as I need to catch all the details. It is helpful to have a pattern to print off but once in a while I come across tutorials where I need to write out the pattern myself. Thank you for sharing this sweet hat pattern! ☺

Making a hat is not easy to get the right size. I would direct crocheters to look at any cheat sheet you can find on Pintereat concerning hat sizes. Learn how to measure your work across the top, (in this case the hdc) for the size hat you're making, and to measure the side (in this case the dc) to know how many rounds of the DC to do to have the depth you need. She kept saying something on how "thick" you want the band, and I think of it more as the "width" of the band. So with that said, look at your hat size chart from Pinterest and you can determine when to stop with the DC rounds and begin your headband rows. Also, very important, the stitches total on both rounds 1 and 2, are 36. Then row 3 is a total of 45 stitches, row 4 is a total of 54 stitches, and row 6 is a total of 63 stitches. If you're making a childs size, refer to your Pinterest chart and STOP doing the hdc rounds when your circle is the closest to what the chart says it should measure to fit t a child (or toddler, or what have you) Very important also is that because each ending round count is divisible by 3, you can begin doing the DC cluster rounds at any time.
Love it.
I like be the way my beanie came out with the bow. Due to the pattern on my yarn not all the colors from the beanie were on the bow so I ended up adding 2 more rounds of DC so all the colors where present and the bow was ginormous after. In my opinion it made my beanie look even better.
Thank you so much a nice easy video to follow, please do more

Sunsheena you're welcome. I have posted another pattern. It's a scarf pattern and next week I'll be doing another beanie. Stay Tuned ❤
I love this pattern. The only thing I would suggest is that you might let us know how many stitches we should have at the end of each row. Like after row 2 we should have 45 stitches and after row 3 we should have 54 stitches and so on. It just helps us to know that we are on track. I stopped and figured out how many stitches I should have because I always count. Just a suggestion. The finished product is awesome. I made 2 of them in very little time. You did a great job.

I got some of those ponytail bands at the Dollor Tree 30 in a pack for $1.00
Love this Look. Easy to follow and create....Thanks for sharing. If I wanted to make this exact hat for a newborn or a younger girl what adjustments would I need to make?
If you crochet loosely it will be bigger . If you crochet tight it will be smaller. For people that don't know, the "crown" width should be the circumference of your head multiplied by 0.85 and divided by 3.14 (pi). My head circumference is 22.... 22 multiplied by 0.85 is 18.7. That divided by 3.14 is 5.95. I tend to make mine 5.5 across because crochet stretches. The crown is the increase stitches.
I love this hat! I used a 5 mm hook and loops and threads soft and shinny yarn that is a 4. I had to add several rows of the clusters to get it the right height. I usually tend to crochet loose so not sure if this yarn is a little on the light side. Love the pattern and the tutorial easy to follow and great job filming your stitches it was really easy to see!! Thank you!

Mine came out so big it looked like a helmet lol. I will try the suggestion you said in the edit using a 4mm then a 5.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I love this hat. I've just started making other things besides blankets and the big thing is beanies..bun hats and head bands right now for me. I've got a few orders for them. 1 kinda big one for my aunt who owned a sporting apparel store. So got about 10 to 20 to whip up for her. I just got done with this hat and it's way too small for my head. I did it exactly as you did. 8 rows of clusters and I did 5 rows for the brim. It's too short and too tight it won't go over my head. It's like a child's size. I may have stitched way too tight on the brim. But its still not long enough for what I need. Is there something I'm maybe doing wrong or do you think if I just did more cluster rows and loosened the brim stitches up that it would work to make it bigger? Or do I have to increase with the HDC more in the beginning? Thank you..I'm going to make a couple more. These are too cute.
thank you for that tip , I HATE that freaking noise too

Thank you for this. Your parents fit my big head
Mine came out, using the I hook, so small that it barely fits my 4 year old. All the comments about them coming out loose had me crochet tightly, and it came out miniature... So... I think using the I hook normally, would work out perfectly. Going to try this again, but in a normal hold, not a tight one.

Thank you, I enjoy your speed. Can you either lower your project a tiny bit so that the stiches won't get lost out of the camera or higher the camera a tad bit.
Made this hat during my lunch break today at work I'm a beginner so there were a few hiccups but it's a perfect fit just a tip if it's coming out too big you most likely slip stitch into wrong space which caused more stitches than needed would love to show a picture of it but don't know how lol
