I greci siracusani, oltre ad Ancona, fondarono anche la colonia di Issa (la moderna isola croata di Vis, o Lissa, in italiano), e quest’ultima fondò attorno al III sec. a.C. Aspálathos (Aσπάλαθος), la città che diede poi il nome alla moderna Spalato, vocabolo che indicava l’arbusto della ginestra spinosa, molto comune in Dalmazia. Poi arrivarono gli antichi romani, che ne cambiarono il nome in Aspalatum. E da lì la decisione dell’Imperatore Diocleziano di costruirvi il proprio palazzo, situato proprio di fronte all’Adriatico. Da allora il destino di un’intera città si legò a quell’edificio… Buona visione!
