Scottsdale Mayor David Ortega now says he's OK with the Arizona Coyotes' plan to build an arena in northeast Phoenix near his city as long it's designed to prevent traffic issues in Scottsdale.
That's a massive change in his position: One day before, he released a letter slamming the development as "not feasible, or welcome."
The proposed project is about 100 acres of land near Loop 101 and Scottsdale Road, on the Phoenix side of the Phoenix-Scottsdale city line. The NHL franchise wants to turn it into a $3 billion entertainment district with restaurants, stores and apartments, as well as a 17,000-seat professional hockey arena.
Original reporting: www.azcentral.com/story/news/...
The mayor all but reversed his strong opposition to the Coyotes project Tuesday, in a follow-up letter shared with journalists. In it, he indicated that he has no problem with the development as long as its main access point faces Phoenix, so as to keep traffic out of Scottsdale.

Scottsdale mayor: “hey, you’re not welcome!” Coyotes: “okay I guess we’ll pack it up then” Mayor: “wait wait no”
This feels like a political back track from the Mayor of Scottsdale since the city of Scottsdale is having elections for mayor this year. After looking it up
Is it an election year? I bet he got alot of angry mail about his statements on Monday.
The announcement that the Coyotes could be moving to SLC came the day after this dim bulb mayor ran his mouth, so it is likely that the NHL finally said "Enough!" and moved forward with moving the team. In the past few years, the Coyotes had looked at 27 - 27! - different potential arena sites in the Phoenix area, with issues being presented for all of them. I know the owner is the target of scorn right now, but it's obvious that the political class played a definite part in the team moving.

No ownership is going to want to move to the Phoenix area with this guy in charge.
This is what Coyotes have been accustomed to for decades. Dangling the carrot.
I feel like a mayor should communicate directly with the principals about logistical concerns for a project like this. Going straight to a public statement seems passive-aggressive to me. Now he looks like a jerk because the principals called his bluff. Not surprising though, since politics in AZ seem to be even more dysfunctional than elsewhere. I feel bad for the fans of the team though!
North Scottsdale has catastrophic water issues already, and a huge project out there does nothing but make them worse. ANOTHER 3 billion dollar 'entertainment district'? Taxpayers pick up the lions share of the tab for that, and get a mediocre team, and overpriced tickets, exactly the same as Glendale, which actually had a fan base.

Thanks for the update. I'm glad that the mayor of Scottsdale is taking a more reasoned approach. Since the land is not in Scottsdale, I can see how it is possible that the mayor was not in the loop and had legitimate concerns. Correcting that response and setting forth his concerns that truly represent his City is appropriate.

Scottsdale Mayor David Ortega: A Profile in Courage
64th Street north of the Loop 101 freeway is only a bridge approach at this point. 64th street has been built south to Mayo Boulevard but not to the north. So it's pretty obvious that once the land bordering 6th Street north of the freeway is sold and developed, there would have to be access to it from 64th Street - DUH!! It'll be interesting to see who bids on the land. If the NHL has expansion plans and the auction is won by someone interested in developing the arena project, investors with experience in real estate development could be part of the ownership group. One crazy possible investor/developer could be Steve Ellman, who formerly owned the Coyotes, and developed Westgate in Glendale, next to the former Coyotes home. Ellman was one of the first sports owners/developers to conceive of large real estate development surrounding and supporting sports venues - an idea which has now been copied over and over (L.A.'s So-Fi Stadium and Atlanta's Truist Park come immediately to mind). Ellman's vision was good. The location and timing weren't.
Changed his tune because he was going to lose his job. Typical political coward. Too late now!
Even though Scottsdale could never directly block the project, they certainly could make the whole process much longer, more expensive, and more uncertain. Imagine if after 10 years in Mullett Arena the Coyotes win the final legal battle to build the new arena and can no longer afford to.
Such a sad day. I went to every game when Yotes played at the Suns arena. When they moved so far west...I just couldnt make the drive. Still love the team. Heartbroken as are so many fans 😢.
He realized how badly he wrecked his career. Hopefully it’s too late for him. But voters do stupid things
Currently 64th St doesn't go anywhere north of the 101, so it would be good to complete that street for access to the area. That area is growing regardless.

Well, what keeps him from changing his mind again (?) Nothing. And that's what the NHL is sick of -- rightly so . . .
Mereulo sells team to the league, gets instant cash to help develop his arena development and get more investors on board. The NHL gets out of the small arena that everyone from the board of governors to the NHLPA don’t like. And Phoenix gets the time it needs to build their arena. And down the road the NHL will expand to Phoenix and Atlanta, two markets Bettman still likes but needed new arenas and in Atlanta’s case, a new ownership group

As a resident I can assure you that Ortega needs to worry about his own infrastructure issues. He’s an idiot. He made the first statement in order to appear relevant as well as appease the wealthy residents of North Scottsdale. Many that I assume will not welcome that type of venue close by.
"Good again by 2030something" is generous. The Coyotes have only made it to the WCF one year. That said, maybe the current ownership is going to buy the land, and build the arena and part of the ownership sale is they get an expansion team in 2029-30 or whenever, so they can build the arena and complex. SLC gets a team that can play next season without needing an expansion draft, Phoenix gets a team with the expansion draft in 2029 or so. Theoretically it's the best for all parties involved. Salt Lake City gets a team immediately, and Phoenix gets the guarantee they get a team in the near future. And Bettman gets to keep his precious Coyotes.
Lobbying should be illegal
Too little too late... probably figured this positioning would go on forever...
it is easy to understand that flip, imagine all those pissed-off hockey fans voting him out of the office, also about getting an expansion team in AZ, I really doubt that will happen in the short term, divisions are balanced and would be a long time before NHL plan the next round, I think.

Arizona will get the Coyotes (West) back after they build a new arena. Atlanta (East) & Houston (West) will also get teams. Another club is needed in the East to get to a balanced 36-team league. What Eastern USA city would work? Bettman may have settle for Quebec City, or maybe put a second team in Toronto - Leafs play in the heart of downtown Toronto (south). Second team could play in the north metro area (Markham / Richmond Hill / Vaughn) if the Leafs are OK with it.

Hello!! What about the Winnipeg Jets fans back in 96 who lost their team? Then for almost 30 years see a clown car of owners, facilities issues, and the team sucked! It was one mistake after another! Bettman should have never this move on unless an arena, where the population and season ticket holder live, was planned and built for hockey within five years. Don’t give me Glendale was built. Nothing wrong with the facility. But it’s not where the population base is.
He’s not wrong. Fantasy and rookie is right
Some people believe fans determine whether a sports franchise stays or leaves a market, which is a lazy way of thinking. The people who own the franchise, those with deep pockets, determine a franchise's fate. Unfortunately, the various owners of the Coyotes since the 1996 move from Winnipeg were so incredibly inept. Also, the political situation in deciding where to build an arena in the Phoenix area did not help either. I remember the NY Mets' early years. They started five years after the Dodgers and Giants moved west. There are still people in the NYC area who are heartbroken by the move. But if one looks closer, the combination of owners dissatisfied with their current venues plus the NYC political situation on building new venues with public money and where the new stadiums should be located (not to mention having more sports teams west of the Mississippi) were also contributing factors. I empathize with fans who support a team that eventually moved to another market. At the same time, I understand that this move, as with any franchise move, is also a business decision. I'm just a customer who can choose or not choose to attend a sporting event for enjoyment and entertainment.
