Quite, I agree. But ahead of BOTH Cruijff and Deutekom in that queue easily is the most internationally admired & famous of all Duch singers, Aafje Heijnis, who rated with Ferrier etc as one of the top contraltos in the 20th Century, but under-valued in her own country. In 'het buitenland' music lovers remember Heijnis before they remember Deutekom, believe me.

Deutekom was a rare gift to us ranking with truely great. I encoutered her twice at the Met in NYC twice in the 70's in Vespri and Don Giovanni. Her Elena was electrifying and she demonstrated the quick fire coloratura that quickens one's spirit. She spread an infectious joy in the theatre as one could feel the joy she felt as she performed! Yes, she was a gift to us.

The great Dutch soprano Cristina Deutekom - gone but never to be forgotten!

That Turandot is utterly sublime. She was 56 Every high note is fully supported with a low larynx...the middle register is clear and loud, the chest is nice and full, none of the collapsed head voice we hear these days. Great upload!

She was 55 here. Amazing how she started her career with Queen of the Night and ended it with Turandot, Lady Macbeth and Abigaille.

Actually, she was 65 here. The date/time stamp on this video is incorrect. This was from her November 1996 Concertgebouw Operafeest concert, which was her return to the concert stage after 10 years.

@@MrCBCarlisle Incorrect. This was from a concert in Tilburg in 1986. In the Concertgebouw 1996 (which looks nothing like this hall in Tilburg) she only sang the Bolero from Vespri and Liebe, du Himmel auf Erden from Paganini.

What a fantastic low register she had for such a light-textured, if large, voice! It's a very interesting and rare combination. She's really convincing as Lady Macbeth and has the ideal voice for Turandot, sufficiently powerful and metallic, but youthful and feminine.

You just GOTTA LOVE HER !!! So special voice, but take a look at her perfect relaxed delivery !!!

I heard it over many years from dozens of sopranos, with terrible, bad, poor, aceptable, regular, standard, good, fine, and excelent interpretations... but this one in particular is the best I ever heard! This madam is extraordinary; the sound of her singing is absolutely fabulous and fantastic: mistery, drama, power and beauty... all within a masterpiece, blended in perfect balance! Braaaviiisiiimaaa!

C'est cette technique, avec les passages ornés et cette coloratura "yodelée" un peu étrange, qui finalement, soutiendra sa superbe voix pendant toutes ces années, lui permettant d'être la Königin, Konstanze, Lucia, Elvira, Norina, Norma, Abigaille et même, Turandot! Même après son opération du cœur, elle a retrouvé la couleur superbe de sa voix. Bravissima. RIP.

Wow....never expected M. Deutekom to have sung Lady M and Turandot, for which he seems to have been very generously endowed....such freedom/ease of emission, attack, squillo.....wow...

Negli anni ottanta non aveva rivali...ascoltata,,,in Norma...e Traviata...grande signora e mai...un vezzo che facilitasse la sua arte...la dizione che ad altre scarseggia ... lei non bara...qui è perfetta e fa Paura estetica e ti manda in Visibilio con un linea di canto che funziona come un metronomo...tutta la sua arte qui si affida ...a due arie ...da far tremare qualsiasi specialista...Chapeau!!

Caro Serafin, concordo. A 55 anni la lady e Turandot di seguito, in due arie complicatissime. Tanto di cappello. Con un po’ di rimpianto. Hanno buttato lo stampo. Siamo invasi da russocinesi tutte esattamente uguali una all’altra. Tutte uguali. Uguali i direttori, i tenori. L’impero del politicamente corretto anche nell’arte. E badi non ho 90 anni, ma 37. Ma le orecchie funzionano tanto da poter riconoscere ciò che non abbiamo più. Saluti.

È esattamente quello che volevo dire io. Lei poi ha un nome importante. Il nome di un maestro che io da callasiano doc non posso non amare e di una cantante che ascoltai anni fa in Turandot e che mi impressionò molto per il modo di cantare autentico. Dio mio... parlo come un vecchietto dei tempi andati... che non ho neppure vissuto avendo meno di quarant’anni! Accontentiamoci di ciò che c’è e prendiamo il meglio! Un saluto cordiale a lei.

Dante Alejandro García sure Sutherland sang without a low and barely a Middle sure she lasted a long time. She didn’t even enunciate. Easy to last 40 years when you just do pretty vocalizes and trills.

Deutekom has a way more developed and bigger voice than Sutherland, with a way more beautiful middle voice!

Art Danks me too I love Sutherland despite everything nobody can deny the miracle that was her voice. Nevertheless me being Italian and all, I just get so frustrated if not altogether irritated by her diction (or lack of) and her lack of personality and artistry. I will listen to her Arias every now and again, I shiver at her trills and fast high lying coloratura but I will gladly take Callas, Deutekom and Moser to a desert island if it came down to that.

Su voz homogénea parece un rascacielos, la anchura del grave la tiene en el agudo, no es como Callas que tenía un color de Mezzo en el centro y el grave pero ligero en el agudo, aquí es un sólo color vocal, por ello mi admiración y profundo respeto a La Deutekom “El Ruiseñor Holandés”.

Absolutely stunning performance. Best Turandot ever. The Lady Macbeth aria is simply incredible. Did she ever sing with more conviction and passion than in this performance? Really wish she had focused more on these dramatic roles earlier in her career. Thank you sooooo much for sharing!

If I have one criticism it is of the conductor who either doesn't have the skill/experience or didn't know the music. There is one entire passage of In Questa... where he stopped beating and the orchestra played without him. She on the other hand is absolutely FABULOUS!

The reason she had those powerful top notes was because she was singing Bel Canto which acts like medicine for the voice. She truly had a Bel Canto instrument not really a pure dramatic soprano.

@@beachfanatic2010 It never ceases to amaze me how someone who truly possesses a Bel Canto instrument and training, can pretty much sing anything, even Verismo! While the opposite is not true. A voice trained to sing Verismo, rarely can sing Bel Canto.

Ich habe echt lange nach dem nächsten Album hesucht, gefunden, Regina 1997, Regina zurecht.

The Turandot is really stunning. Pity the conductor was so all over the place. What year was this recorded? She doesn't look young but sounds much fresher than other later recordings. Those top notes are really magnificent.

There’s no clockoloratura, she was simply perfect at this time ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Yes, from what I recall she retired from performing in 1986, this is one of her last performances. We're so lucky to have it!

It's Incredible, but the truth is....... she surpasses even Nilsson!!!!!!..... She allows herself to sing "rubato" - free tempo - and doesn't let the conductor tyrannize her. The outcome is much more dramatic, much more complete. Still, I think Nilsson's diction is a bit clearer. The Lady Macbeth excerpt was also superb. She should have stood on one level with the greatest. Much more versatile than Nilsson, with her beautiful coloraturas. How come she didn't record Aida and the others???? What a waste!!!! Wow, what an ending!!!! Her upper region was definitely better than Nilsson's, she had FFF and PPP, both stable and effortless. LUCKY PIRAT!!! Where is the rest of this marvelous concert?????? THANKS FOR POSTING ANYWAY!!

Ze zong twee aria's in het Concertgebouw in 1996 t.g.v. het 25 jarig jubileum van haar manager. Het concert waar deze opname werd gemaakt was op 12 mei 1986 in Tilburg.

You can see at moment 11:12 that Ms. Deutekom realizes that the orchestra missed the aria stretch and she shakes her head "kind" of disapproving.

There were two famous dramatic coloraturas who attempted Turandot and there are many different recordings around. While I find both too light, Deutekom KILLS Sutherland, EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Non e' mai stata un leggero. Aveva una voce scura anche agli inizi e una zona sopracuta molto voluminosa e lucente ma non era un leggero. L'ho ascoltata agli inizi della sua carriera anche in Mozart e Norma, non aveva nulla del leggero. Come la Callas aveva una voce che poteva cantare tutto e spessissimo con risultati egregi e molti da manuale come Norma, Astrifiammante, Turandot, Lucia.
