Check Cristina Deutekom - Aria & Cabaletta Abigaille, part 1 & 2

She makes it sound so easy! It's like the role was written for her.

Exactly the kind of voice I want in an Abagaille. I realize that some people may dislike Deutekom's unique brand of vocalism, but it is nothing short of astounding to me.

I love her!

Wow, wow the queen of effortless. As someone else has commented no pushing of the voice.She sings everything with so much ease. What a voice, what a singer. Bravaaaaa Christina.

Wow, this is absolutely wonderful. My favorite Abigaile after Maria and Ghena. And that's a huge compliment.

I love Deutekom's voice. When I listen to Cristina, everyone in my house listens as well. It's not just her coloratura, it's her chest voice in the high register that is truly astounding, always on pitch and forceful. She was unique and Mozart would have loved her.

I didn't notice that her voice can be so beautiful and powerful and exciting in her audio recordings. Wow!!!! She's marvellous!

@Altonahh10 Although Suliotis sang Abigail very convincingly, there are many who conjecture that this role was what burned out her voice so quickly, and shortened her career.

Muti is a togas! Cristina was such a great coloratura soprano! I loved her 30 years ago and still love her today! Thank you for the posting another member of the "platinum" age of singing!

Oh?? And I thought she was named The Best Queen of the Night Ever?? And that she was renowned for her Lucia and Norma, to start with?? Yours is by faaar the most condescending remark supposed to be a complment I've ever read about her... Sorry, but maybe you didn't see enough of her!!

I am only discovering her no long ago, and I cannot stop asking myself why she is not usually remembered as one of the best sopranos of the XX century (except for the more knowledgeable opera listeners). I have heard her so far in coloratura roles, so when I saw this video of her singing Abigaile I was a bit sceptical. Lord, I was wrong! Her range was immense, and her passaggi were flawless. It is such a pity that modern singers have moved away from this kind of singing!

So was Sutherland (or Sills) very Australian (or American), very friendly and no diva allures ....and Callas was Greek/American. Also Spanish Caballe. So I don't understand your unfinished Italian point. Which Italians are you thinking of, and how would it be different for a Dutch girl?

Io ero in sala quella sera e vi posso assicurare che rimasi impressionato da quanto "corresse" la voce di questo fantastico soprano: nonostante la mediocre acustica del Comunale, io ero in prima galleria e mi sembrava di averla accanto !!!

​​@@stefanoferrari8781 , anche io l'ho veduta tante volte. Era una voce enorme, molto espressiva e in alcuni momenti richiesti anche molto violenta. Agilita' e sopracuti da vendere e squillantissimi. Dopo la Callas e' forse la sola che abbia cantato e interpretato Norma in maniera adeguata. Poteva cantare ancora...la salute non l'ha aiutata. E' stata una cantante sottovalutata.

Abigaille is pure bel canto. Why shouldn´t the best Königin der Nacht ever not be perfect for Abigaille or Lady Macbeth? The requirements are similar. Fast coloratura, flexibility and breathing.

63Atilla: I agree, artistry is key, and I didn't mean that 'come scritto' is poor artistry...in fact, I prefer some operas sung 'come scritto'. Embellishment without genius is fluff, simplicity with genius is brilliant. Thank you for helping me find those words.

Obviously a great performance even with Muti's show-conducting!

Is there a video of Deutekom singing Die Zauberflotte? There's one that's bad. How abot Eda Moser's? Can you tell if there is one? Yhank you for the great moments of pure pleasure you people give me here!

Dimitrova aveva una voce piu scure di quella di Deutekom.

Had never seen this before. Terrific. ... but why does Muti kill the energy in the postlude by almost conducting 8th notes?!?

@edgarbiervliet she did the musetta walz as an encore in ghent in 1980 was great of course but the audience expected a " Queen" aria what she did not do anymore since the early seventies and the orchestra - opera house gent - was booed a few times

Don't worry! Muti's out of La Scala. And he can take his "come scritto" attitude with him!

It seems incredible to me that she can sing both Abigaille and the QofTN. She's a superb Abigaille. By the way, Robertdonkers, I saw Pauline Tinsley as Abigaille at the Mayflower in Southampton about 25 years ago. She was one of the most popular British dramatic sopranos of the era. Great voice, but Oh God, so ugly (sorry).

surprisingly effective but I personally think the very best Abigaille was Suliotis

@nqqa too bright. the queen of the night is, well, a queen of the night, and should be sung by a darker more sinister voice capable of the sheer nastiness that it demands. personally, I think Edda Moser is unmatched.

Edda Moser’s technique was occasionally suspect. Deutekom’s was not.

.....ma non credo proprio, la Deutekom esegue la Regina della notte come fosse di un'altra dimensione, il cristallo della sua voce, la perfezione tecnica, tutto questo la rendono sovrannaturale, imperiale nel freddo distacco.

Muti's conducting seems quite boring here

Qui credo che Muti non abbia permesso alla Deutekom di fare il sopracuto....lui è filologico (dice) ma nella Traviata alla Scala alla Fabbricini ha permesso il Mi b chissa' come mai? Cristina resta sempre e per sempre una grandissima.

....ma certo, un soprano che ha il Fa sopracuto il Do della cabaletta di Nabucco lo fa senza neppure respirare 🤣..... è Muti che non ha voluto. Ma non importa è talmente perfetta nell'esecuzione di tutte le altre note che va bene pure così.
