I suffer from depression but honestly, having an unkempt home would make me more miserable. My home is my sanctuary from the outside world. So I MUST keep it clean and organized. I can almost hear my great grandmother in my head tell me to get my butt up and clean. I especially have to keep my kitchen, bedroom and bathroom clean. Having a clean home just makes me feel more accomplished and peaceful. We all deserve to live in a peaceful, serene, beautiful and clean home. 🥰

Cleaning makes me feel calm, especially if I am accomplishing something that really has, in my opinion, a great "before and after." I keep my home very tidy, but when I move a piece of furniture, or an appliance, and really get in there I feel great after. It's not as if anyone else will see behind the fridge, or behind the sofa. Just knowing it is clean and fresh makes me feel happy. :)

My first apartment looked like the ones you clean. They are not staged and I don't understand how people can think you come into someones, make it dirty and throw a lot of trash there, so you can clean it. Yes, depression often are the reason behind it. It can make you not see in what terrible condition your home is. It makes you learn to ignore it but you also know the condition is more than terrible and you don't want anyone to come to your home, because it's embarrassing.

So was my mother but not as bad Aurikatariina's clients. Try not to look at cleaning your mother's house as a negative or you may experience depression. I enjoy cleaning so it is not a chore to me. Have a sibling take your mom to their house for a couple days. That way you can clean and organize without distractions. I brought boxes with me to my mother's to put dirty dishes, pots & pans in until the counter and upper cabinets by the sink were cleaned first. Then I did the rest of the upper cabinets one at a time so not to be overwhelmed. Then I cleaned the lower cabinets the same way. I kept the clean pots & pans on the clean counter until after their cabinet had been cleaned. I spent 2 full days just in the kitchen. BE PREPARED to threw out a lot of expired food. I bought fresh food before leaving the 2nd day and took trash bags with me knowing she would go through them when I left. I spent 2 more days cleaning the rest of her 3 bedroom house. I used the empty boxes to load knick knacks scattered around the house. I let mom decide which ones she wanted to keep and dropped off the rest at Goodwill. I deep cleaned the 2 bathrooms last because I throw away any sponges or rags used in bathrooms. I also used my steam mop to sanitize the tiles after scrubbing soap scum off. My granddaughter came with me and kept her great grandparents company while I cleaned, and they loved their time together. Every other weekend I spent at mom's. The other weekend was at dad's cleaning his home (divorced parents). Both passed when my granddaughter was 5 years old so she got to know them for 3+ years before they passed. She loved them and was so excited when we pulled into their driveways, wanting out of her car seat before I parked the car. They enjoyed her company so much and were less cranky when we were there. lol I bought both parents a Swiffer Wet Jet mop for a quick and easy way to clean spills when I wasn’t there. My granddaughter likes mopping and my parent's got a kick out of watching her. And she helped in the bathrooms using the steam mop. So cute. So glad I turned a negative situation into a positive by taking my granddaughter with me. She is now 13 and still talks about the time she spent with them. ❤

Midwest Magic Cleaning is another good channel to watch. He does the same thing Auri does, free cleaning for hoarder situations etc. The best thing is to always just start with the trash. Get all of that out first. What the Midwest guy also suggests it to just focus on one area at at time. Specifically start with one surface. Not the sink yet. Just a counter or a table top, and remove EVERYTHING from it. If you can put stuff away do that, or just find another place to set them for now. One one surface is clean, that can act as a “base station” to set your cleaning supplies, or a place to put stuff while you move on to other surfaces. Yes you most likely will have to reclean that first space if you’re putting dirty things back onto it, but it’s at least a place to start. Just get in there and start picking things up, hold them and move them around. That act alone can help kickstart the cleaning process and get your mind organized to the tasks needing to be done. Good luck with your cleaning!

Auri has some videos with a helpful little checklist in the corner, if you search back a few videos. The difficult thing about Auri's videos is that she only takes on the houses where she can throw out all the garbage, which is smart and satisfying, but of course many homes and owners insist on keeping /everything/. I agree with the comment above/below that recommends Midwest Magic Cleaning's channel and also I really enjoy A Hoarder's Heart, as she offers good strategies for cluttered people to start to thin out their belongings. Right now you and your mom are in overwhelm mode, but as you begin to throw out junk, it will give you some breathing room. As you start to touch possessions it will "wake up" the energy of the item so you can begin to know what to do with it (a la Marie Kondo). I find a helpful strategy for myself, to stay focused, is to film the area I'm working on. I have a habit of half completing a million little areas and not feeling accomplished. When I film one single area, it keeps my brain in that area to completion, even if "to completion" means moving an item out of the shot to another surface. In the process, many other items are dealt with *for good*. It can also be helpful to track your progress in ways such as 1. keeping track of the number of bags of trash you throw out or 2. making a "tossy tossy" pile of items that are being trashed/recycled/thrown away (this is a strategy Miss Heart uses to show herself what great progress she has made, even when the area looks basically the same lol. Often you will work really hard and feel like you don't see a difference, especially cause when you really start going at it, things get worse before they get better. Tracking things this way will show you you really are making progress and motivate you further. Before & After photos of one single area are great for motivation as well. When you find an Auri video with the checklist in the corner, write it down for yourself or make your own checklist to organize your brain on paper - 1. throw away all the trash 2. deep clean two cabinets 3. empty and wash the sink 4. wash a sink load of dishes, etc. My mom is clean, but she is also a semi hoarder who accumulates too many belongings. On her own, she can't accomplish anything, but with me there, she makes a ton of progress. You can act as an external force to help your mom's reasoning. Present her with only one item at a time. When we see a wall of stuff, we can't think at all; it is too much. Instead, bring her one object and ask if she loves it, if she wants it, if it will add to her life or feel like a drain on her energy, if she uses it, if she knows when or what she'll use it for, etc etc. Having you there will also serve as what I believe is called Body Mirroring. Seeing you get to work will give her the motivation to also clean with you. If sucks to do things alone; its fun to do things with people. One more thing I love is items with expiration dates. They make it really cut and dry. Body items and makeup items that are expired aren't effective or can cause issues like break outs. Food items can cause illness that just isn't worth it. If you keep telling yourself that it is probably still good, ask yourself if you are willing to eat it RIGHT NOW. If you aren't, chances are you never will feel okay eating it/using it. Just throw it away. Sorry this was a bit of a brain dump, lol. Good luck!

I think that you might be my favorite cleaning channel ever. Not only are you helping people get a fresh start in their homes but you don't make them feel ashamed. It always kinda rubs me the wrong way when people are just always pointing out how gross the home is, only because I feel like it sometimes will make others with homes like that who are trying to find inspiration to clean feel ashamed. But with you constantly saying things like "wow this is amazing" or "so beautiful!" it focuses more on the joy of cleaning and I love it! Thank you so much for doing what you do

For real happiness we need to become GOOD. We will never be truly happy until our inner house is free of anger, resentment and grudges.
