The usage of color in these costumes is magnificent. The yellow symbolizing warmth, safety, and happiness. The blue symbolizing secrecy, isolation, and cold. And the red symbolizing the gruesome violence and tragedy. The way she captured the silhouette so accurately yet using modern elements is so tasteful. Absolutely love these costumes.

It reads as authentic because of the accuracy in the silhouettes. Almost all period movies slightly modernize this but silhouette more than anything else defines a decade's fashion. I LOVE these costumes.

If I were to make a… lukewarm defence of it in the case of Lucille, from what I understand chemise’s are usually made of very thin, delicate fabrics and depending on the quality could possibly be expensive. Seeing as most of the Sharpe’s clothes are 20+ years old it’s possible that her chemise became too worn or damaged to wear and they didn’t have the money to replace them, I also think it’s implied that Lucille’s dresses used to be her mothers (as she would’ve been a little girl during the 1880’s) but wearing her mothers chemise would be akin to wearing her underwear, so not the same as wearing hand-me-down outerwear.

Holy hell how have I not seen this video. This was one of my favourite movies of that year. And one of my favourite things about it was the costumes. Lucille's black dress, I became obsessed with it. You legit read my mind when talking about this movie, it felt like a Gothic opera or a Shakespearean tragedy. When watching the movie I picked up on the opposites between Edith and Lucille. Edith wore light colours with colourful flowers. It made her glow with life. But Lucille on the other hand wore dark colours, her style was beautiful but very macabre, she was dark, decay and blood. Both represented their nature very well in their costumes

thank you for making these videos! the more I watch the more I am fascinated with this avenue of art. I am curious as to your thoughts on costumes of modern (but still excellent and thought provoking) period films? I am referring to films that do not have as elaborate costumes as for example GOT or Crimson Peak. How do brilliant costume designers still tell story and design with purpose in a film set in today's world, with today's clothing?

  • @Costume_CO

Hi Stephany, thank you so much for your lovely comment. Interesting that you should ask about modern costume design. I just watched and awesome interview with Ann Crabtree, the designer of The Handmaid's Tale and Westworld. She talks in great detail about the challenges of costuming a contemporary piece. What she says is that it is just as challenging, but unfortunately it doesn't get the recognition it deserves in the same way that historical films do. I personally love contemporary works and I have reviewed a few so far. Unfortunately, I only have so much time to so a video that I often got to the most celebrated, but I hope in the future to tackle these more modern pieces too.

If I can make a slight piece of constructive criticism on the production side of the video, which overall is fantastic and please know that it’s something small, but the music choice on the background kind of took me out of what you were talking about. I understand the choice of it though! It’s very fitting to the film you are talking about and the aesthetic of it, but there were moments when the piano and violin suggested an ominous sound when you were talking about the techniques, like when talking about the pleating in Edith’s shirt. Please feel free to ignore this but I just wanted to share something that I felt took me out of the wonderful analysis you were sharing.

my absolute favourite costume design ever! I want to wear every single one (or at least create something similar), especially Edith's. 'Gothic' fashion is usually more like what Lucille wears & while it's gorgeous I 100% prefer Edith's look - it's so feminine and elegant in an otherwordly way

I LOVE these videos! I am a fanatic fan of historical/history influenced fashion, and your videos about costumes are just superb! If it's not too rude, I would like to suggest some movies/ series to review: Daenerys from GoT, Memoirs of a Geisha, Marie Antoinette, The Musketeers (the BBC series) Sweeney Todd, Sleepy Hollow (1999 version)

NP, it's already there. :) The company is UK based but you can check and see if your local pleater offers the same service. I wouldn't try hand pleating taffeta, but if you want to try it on a natural fabric, you can also try the broomstick pleating.

I think it's likely a silk organza because it is stiff. If you want to recreate it, a synthetic organza will likely work very well and hold the pleat permanently.

Edith’s wardrobe as exquisite as it is, confuse me, I realize from your video that the puff sleeves were meant to invoke a butterfly however in 1901, the leg of mutton sleeve or puff sleeve was almost completely out of fashion. It confuses me a bit as Edith was modern and wealthy, she would have had the latest fashions. Am I wrong?

Ediths sleeves drove me crazy. It threw me out of the story so bad because they would have been quite out of fashion by 1901. In the mid to late 1890's we had a sleeve shift back to a slim silhouettes and not these giant monstrosities we see in the movie. It threw me so bad because in that scene we see her with her giant golden pillows on her arm and then she walks by a model T Ford which didn't come out until 1908 so I was like, wait when did this take place? I just don't get why movie makers do this. How hard is it to check if something existed in the year your movie is set. And again why did they choose the giant sleeves for Edith? She young and wealthy and so most likely would not have been wearing such a dated sleeve choice. It's like wearing giant flaired, bell bottom jeans from 2001 in 2012. You just didn't do it. Why not just shift the timeline back like a decade if you wanted the giant sleeves. Ugh, I'm such a stickler, this is why I can't watch period movies. LOL
