That's not true. My wife was breaking dishes in the kitchen because she was angry with me. In anger, I punched her shoulder. She rocked on her feet and I knew immediately that I would never hit her again. And I never did. We got a divorce years later. My fault, I didn't settle down. I always spoke well of her because I didn't want to hurt my daughter's feelings. One day we argued a little and she called me every name she could. I looked down at my little girl and left the kitchen. As I was walking away, I spun around and went back into the house. I gave her a piece of my mind and told her to never speak badly around my daughter again. She kringed but I never thought of hitting her. After that disagreement I avoided her for decades even though I still loved her for 5 years after our divorce. I never married again and neither did she.

Not true Cathy, I have known of a couple of men who hit once and were so sorry they never did it again. These kinds of generalizations can destroy relationships when they could be reconciled. I have been married 50 years and know we all do things in our youth as young married people that are wrong, but that does not mean we stay that way. I have personally changed a lot and so has my husband over the years. We have a great marriage and have had through most of it because we forgave one another when we were sorry and we grew to be better people. Far too many marriages nowadays give up too soon instead of fighting for their marriage they bail out and look for someone new. No one knows how many of these marriages could have been reconciled and turned out wonderful because they never gave it a chance. The key is to test the person before marriage, how they react to disagreement will tell us a lot. And, all this shacking up just for sex is blinding people to the character of a person.

She shouldn’t have gotten such a lengthy prison sentence. The only reason she did was because Dennis was a cop. She should’ve given a plea of temporary insanity. I watched my own poor mum go through it all with my abusive father, too afraid to leave him with four children in tow and nowhere to go. She left him once and he cried like a baby and said he couldn't live without her, after four weeks she went back and regretted it because even though he promised not to hit her again, after about six months he did. These men cannot change so don't ever think you can help them ladies, you want a supportive and loving man not a project! And if they loved you they wouldn't hurt you. They need professional help, they are psychologically scarred and emotionally insecure and not amount of loving them can fix it!

This movie hit home! My father was an abusive to my mother and older siblings. The part of this movie when Dennis threatened Donna telling her that he could easily kill her and scatter her body all over this was the samething my father told my mother. We were living in a small California desert community and my father told my mom that he could kill her and all us children, bury us in the desert and no one would ever find us. He was so correct because my mom was home bound. My father controlled everything. At that time of the threat mom my got us all out of the house by the help of my 2 older sisters and their spouses. They came and rescued us moved us far away. People domestic violence is nothing to play around with the abusers will never change. They only manipulate their victims into believing they have or going to change. If you or loved ones are in an abusive relationship help get them out of it. Many people's lifes are lost in these types of relationships.

So many say why didn’t they just leave etc… much easier said than done!! Especially when you’re already in love with or love the person who becomes abusive verbally or physically! People always are on their best behavior in the beginning of any relationship- otherwise who in their right mind would choose someone so callus and evil. Unless you’ve walked a day in their shoes you’ll never no how hard and confusing a toxic abusive relationship is. 😢

Tina Turner. Nina Simone. Natalie Woods. Nicole Simpson. Reeva Steenkamp. Being beautiful or successful or good, doesn't stop someone hurting you, if they have a problem ,inside themselves.... @@MsBornSecond she obviously knew what she did was illegal and she knew the consequences of her actions/involvement would result in her punishment. Sometimes when people are in desperate situations, they resort to desperate measures. It's the whole, "every action has a reaction philosophy". When you try to put yourself into her position and you realize that she felt as though she literally had no other options, it comes down to a matter of "it's either him or me", you'd be surprised of what you'd be capable of too, I'm sure. She decided to spend time with her sister, undoubtedly knowing in the back of her mind that it could be the last time for her to do so outside of a visit in prison. I'd want to spend time with my sister too (who by the way, also, was a victim of domestic violence. Perhaps this is why I feel the way I do). I do have sons and my sons have been taught from an extremely young age that you NEVER EVER, under any circumstances, put your hands on a girl/woman. I stumbled over this movie some 25 years after I first saw it. I had forgotten its name but I immediately recognized it. It made a big impact on me. When I first saw it I was around 23 and now I'm almost 50. What's strange is that I don't remember it being this gruesome at all. I took it much better as a kid. This is perhaps the most raw portrayal of spousal abuse I've seen. But it's good I guess. It should make you feel repulsed and I am. "Sleeping with the enemy" comes off as a comedy next to this.

Can I just say to anyone man or woman out there, the first time a person speaks to you without respect, belittles your opinions, beliefs or feelings, raises their voice to you, or even worse, strikes, slaps, pushes, shoves you. GET OUT!!! STAY AWAY!! DON'T EVER FORGET AND DON'T EVER FORGET!!! You have one life. Just a relatively short time on this earth. Please don't let someone take any of those years, months, even days away from you!! The saying that 'PEOPLE NEVER CHANGE!' is so very true! Save your Life and Save your future! Before you know it, it's too late. We don't have long so don't waste a moment of your precious time on undeserving individuals! Expect to be treated the way you treat others. Also it's devastating for children who are caught in the fallout.

Are you kidding!!! Raises their voice? You must be expecting perfection! You must have never been married! I never heard of a married couple who haven't raised their voice at each other at some time! Lol. That's just being human. And also during the course of a normal marriage their may be a few times that your opinions or feelings are not very respected. Real life is not a romance novel. People make mistakes and can be disrespectful or thoughtless sometimes. A good spouse forgives and realizes that they are not perfect either. But I agree that no one should put up with it when it gets physical. Or if the verbal and psychological abuse is constant with no remorse. That might be a different story.

@@Dion-rz3fz that is exactly what J was talking about, it seems you took the comment to heart, he wasn't talking about disagreements with a reasonable person could have a conversation and reach an agreement together as a couple. The movie did a great job of explaining the abuse that goes on between men and women, where a man murders his wife, he gets 2 to 6 years, yet when it's the other way around, the wife gets the book thrown at her, that man never loved or respected anyone but himself and the fact he can hide behind a badge makes it all the worse. It seems in my opinion it seems you haven't respected your marriage like you should otherwise you would have realized J's comment was talking about the movie, not your marriage.

Then he says you should GET OUT! STAY AWAY! DONT EVER FORGET! My point was that it seems "over the top" to react that way, because I have never known anyone in a marriage for any length of time that didn't at some time do each of these things. The physical abuse is different, and I said that in my comment. But I stand by what I said. A spouse is going to eventually speak to you without respect at some point, or raise their voice, and that is no excuse to "Get out, stay away, never forget!" No one would EVER stay together if that happened.

It means you were brought up the correct way. I was a victim of abuse from infancy, and I've had to retrain myself as an adult to stop accepting abuse. It's not so much that I am a doormat that I learnt not to fight back and to just take the blows: as a child, you do not stand any chance of successfully defending yourself against an adult, let alone several adults, so you just walk on eggshells, trying to be perfect (I would fantasize about becoming invisible - definitely no 'Mummy, look at me!' on my part), and when the shit hits the fan, you just pray that it will be over soon. I was so scared of my 'family' that I started to have suicidal thoughts when I was only 8-9. I would actively research the best ways to commit suicide too (I came from a background of officers in the army and the navy, including vets of several wars, and of medical doctors and magistrates, so I had a bit of knowledge about how to commit a homicide and how to commit suicide). I started fantasising about killing my family of origin when I was in my late teens. I tried to run away for the first time when I was 4, and started preparing my flight for good when I was 12 (getting undeclared jobs and trying to save money). I made several attempts to leave when I was between 18 and 25 but couldn't find work and accommodation, or even open a bank account. I got lots and lots of offers of help from pimps though. Thankfully I had been sexually abused from the age of 3 and had developed vaginismus, so prostitution, or 'finding a rich man that will pay all your bills', as other people put it, was not an option for me. As a result, I was homeless on and off from the age of 21, but it's still better than living with my family, especially if you have a tent to spend the night in and somewhere to shower (gym membership). I have attracted wife beaters all my life: they can see I am scared of violence, and they think it means I will be submissive and docile. A sex slave and a punching bag (and the perfect housemaid/cook: I can relate to Donna preparing a meal for her husband's return from work, as this is how my 'family' expected me to serve them. I didn't eat with them...) Several female colleagues have tried to set me up with men who were wife beaters (divorced, separated, restraining orders banning them from coming near their former wife/girlfriend). The last time, I told that lady (who was happily married, to a guy who was very macho but didn't beat her up, and disapproved of me being single and childless) that the guy was a wife beater. She said , speaking of hersefl and her husband, who was a friend of the guy: 'We know, but you told me you were used to being beaten up as a chld, so we thought you could take it, you are ideal for this type of guy'. That was the end of our 'friendship'. Her husband and his friend (the guy who was a wife beater, divorced at least twice) started bad mouthing me, saying I must be working in prostitution etc. and I ended up resigning.

If a man his a woman, she should haul-off and knock him into the afterlife with whatever heavy, portable object she can find at the time. You see the residuals battered women have to go thru. If women would FIGHT-BACK more, the laws would change. The old adage of the squeaky wheel getting the most oil fits here. Women need to sound off on these bastards that continue to batter them. I teach women self-defense. Just because they are small doesn't mean they aren't capable of knocking your block off if provoked! I teach them how to survive - I teach them to fight dirty! I feel bad for a guy who runs into one of my proteges - they are gonna get something they never knew was possible! But - things do not have to escalate as far as violence - IF - the woman would walk away after the first example of brutality. Ladies...don't stand for it. The saddest part that they will deceive you at the beginning of the relationship they will BOMBING love you. When a man or woman seem to perfect, be very careful. My suggestion is, do not move fast in any relationship. Pase it. Eventually the reality of their true self comes out. You do not want it to be too late. They always give you signs but because they con you to think they are perfect you ignore them. This happens more often that people think. GOOD MOVIE

Yeah, it is terrible. It really is self-defense. They want to live and their life is under threat and she is the weaker vessel that just wants to survive. When a man kills, it would be rare if it were self-defense, so they get away with murder. Different strokes for different sexes. It is the old story of if a guy has a problem, it must be the wife's fault. It folks you go to church with will blame you. They should keep their mouth shut since they didn't want to reprove, rebuke and hopefully exhort the man for his troubles, when they had the opportunity. For example it is absurd to blame the spouse that a person has become an alcoholic. There sins are there sins. They choose to do wrong and the wife doesn't do that for them nor do all of the women drive them to it. It is just that there is a lot of sick puppies out there (male or female), and they will charm you until the vows are said. It is an act and they are all a lie.

Unfortunately she hired someone to have him killed. Not that the guy didn’t deserve it; But, the law always sides with their own. My advice, develop a strong martial arts background and learn how to shoot. Do not rely on anyone else to do it for you. It’s best to have the training in case you run into a pos like this. I and I’m sure many others have read or viewed cases like this one. Unfortunately, the abused one gets strung up by the law. You see Women getting life in prison for finally snapping on trash like this guy. Bottom line, if a Man hits you, get the hell out. If he comes after you? Use your skills. He steps foot in your home all bets are off!

There is no justice for women caught in the same circumstances: not by society's attitude and distorted perception of marriage and women's place in it, not by education in schools, not by the police, not by the judicial system and the heinous injustice of different verdicts for women and men - for the same offense. There is a lot to learn from this very good film about the distorted perception of manhood: I'm old now, but I'll never forget the boy of 9-10 years old in my class at the elementary-school, who gathered one day all the boys and made them vow not to hit, never ever, girls. He showed on this initiative what true masculinity is, and at that early age! And, as a result of wrong perceptions - the horrible personality's changes caused by taking steroids (or getting drunk and other drugs' addiction, for that matter) should be taken seriously. Never trust no one that said he or she loves you no matter the cause, because is not true. I never found loved in no one, only on Jesus Christ.

I think I wasn't ever super close to any of them so it should have been less surprising. I did patch up things with my mom and helped her so many times when she got older and feeble, needing my help. I left my parrots and my job on hold, sometimes my college work to make sure she was okay. I am glad I did it as it proved I am not a bad person. The worst was her dementia and she turned against me and said I did these awful things. My family should have known it was her dementia that caused her paranoia. My goodness they knew me for 50 yrs plus and should have supported me but didn't. I'm lost now and not sure I'll recover. I wish you well. You went through your own hell too. I'm glad you have Jesus to lean on. Please believe in yourself too and live life to the fullest. We should be respectful and loving to ourselves so don't forget that.
