Cricut vs. Silhouette vs. Brother: Cutting Machines Compared!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Buying an electronic cutting machine can open up a whole world of creative possibilities, but they are expensive, and you definitely shouldn’t rush into buying one without considering what you need the machine for. Felicia breaks down all the features and limitations of the most popular electronic cutting machines: Cricut Maker 3, Silhouette Cameo 4, and the Brother Scan N'Cut. This will help you decide which cutting machine is best for you.
Felicia goes through basics like how many materials they can cut, which machine is the quickest, and which is the easiest to use. We’ll also consider cost, accessories, as well as the software that you’ll need to use to accompany each model. This video should give you a good grounding in what your options are for each different machine and help you come to a decision around which machine you should buy. Did this video answer all your questions? If you have any more, let us know in the comment section and we’ll try to answer them.

Now I have a use for one, it was a hard decision (not knowing what they all did/didn’t did) which one to actually invest in. Great video for these specific models of the selected popular brands. There are far more cutting machines brands available to choose from as well as more models within these brands. Look up specific model reviews for features you want within your budget. Look for clearance sales as well or even some used older models to get started. My all time favorite is Scan n cut higher end model. I like this model for sewing machine applique compatibility and quilting. I also like that there is no on going cost of use after the purchase unless you want advanced kits or blades. They all have 3rd party tools you can purchase as well for additional features.

As far as I know a specific Scan n cut model is compatible with a Brother Embroidery machine. Both made and sold by the same company. As for Paff, you would need to ask an authorized Paff sewing machine dealer if they have compatible file types and connections to the Brother Scan n cut or if there is conversion software available for that purpose. There seem to be work arounds to everything.

I would like to know which one cuts the best, doesn't leave marks on the sheets, which makes the least cutting errors and which one has the best processor please The cricut software can read and make the cut lines on his own or you have to do it manually?

  • @FamilyUnit

    @FamilyUnit

    8 ай бұрын

None of these machines leave marks on the sheets and I've been successful with all of them having very little to no cutting errors. Print then cut on the Cricut machine does sometimes need to be calibrated, but for the most part that is stable. Cricut and Silhouette machines can do print then cut and this means you send your designs to your printer and allow the machines to do the cutting - no manual cutting at all. From a software perspective, I believe Cricut's is the easist to use but Silhouette's is the most powerful. Hope this helps.

Hey, nice video. As a primary school teacher I do a lot of cardboard cutouts and wanted to have a plotter. I tried the Cameo 4 and was hugely disappointed. Not only was it unbearable load (moved it to another room after 1h of testing) and it also wasnt really able to cut the cardboard reliably. With 10 passes and really slow cutting speed I was able to cut my cardboard. I mainly use the backs of the paper blocks they use in school. Can you recommend the Brother Scan n Cut for this? Would it be able to scan and cut out stuff that was laminated? And which Model would you suggest? Some are quite expensive (585€ SDX1250 for example) compared to the Cameo 4 (250€). Thanks in advance, you seem to answer everything

Question: The cruit work space you can make the design , send it to the cutter, load and cut the design. It looks like for bother is extra steps since you SEND it to the machine then load the mat then cut it. its not as quick as the criucut since you have to send it to the machine. Is this correct or can you make the brother machine cut from your computer like the cricut without the need of going to the machine?

I purchased a cricut maker for my Granddaughter two years ago, she was busy and only used it maybe 30 times and it stopped working. She has been unable to find any resource to fix it. I purchased it at Michael’s and the warranty period was up by the time it failed. Do you know a) is there somewhere she can take it to get it fixed, and b) is there support for the other machines? I am a retiree and a quilter, and am suffering from arthritis. It’s getting harder to cut the pieces I need accurately. I bought an Accuquilt system a couple of years ago, but I’m finding it wastes too much fabric and the plates are very expensive.

I also bought the Cricut Maker 3 and I regret it very much. The cut is not precise and I lose a lot of material. I sent it back to fix it, I'll receive it next week, I'll see if it will change. And in addition the software is a disaster with the Ipad always losing connection or the wheel that spins non-stop 🙄

Cricut design space is THE shittiest piece of creative software I've ever came across. Cricut is simply treating their system as a design store. It is time they realized that desktop cutter is a tool. That means first and foremost, you have to be able to load the file and adjust all the technical parameters of a job - tool, pressure, speed, passes count, order of paths, etc. Whatever is built on top of that is just secondary. Cricut maker 3 was actually my first desktop cutter, and I loved the build quality, tools, feel, technology, etc., but their ideas about community relationship just made me return all I ever bought with Cricut logo on it. Whoever tried to ever make alternative software to work with their machines and replace the design space, always got sued and destroyed. Cricut simply won't even try to tend to the needs of their comunity, if anyone else tries, gets sued, and at the time I bought the machine, Cricut was even considering making the Design space subscription based... So in short, they thought it is a good idea to force their users to use their shitty software, and on top of that to pay for it. I absolutely hate to return whatever I bought, but Cricut pissed me off so much, I've never ever returned anything that quickly. I eventually replaced it with Silhouette Cameo 4, which is an inferior machine but with superior software, which makes it in the end much more usable than Cricut. If cricut kept their lawyers in their pants and let the community make the software it needs, they could've absolutely dominated the market of hobby desktop cutting machines.

Thank you! I’ve used silhouette since 2016 & I am on my 3rd machine. I have the longer Silhouette 4 and the design software. What I have had trouble with lately is the frequent upgrades. I do other crafts so I may go long periods without using it. But lately I have been using it more. It seems like in the past three weeks I have had to go through updates three times. That is time consuming, and sometimes prevents me from pinning the Silhouette on my computer. Lately, a lot of people told me that the Cricut is more user friendly. I have been thinking about switching. Having computer issues sometimes makes me want the brother. But after watching your video, I think I’ll just keep my silhouette and switch from design software to the business. They have come out with the silhouette five, but I don’t know if it’s just pre-order now. I’m not purchasing. I have to admit, I did not know about the cutter on the back of machine.

I’d never buy a cricket my niece had one and her roller wheels broke and they told her will give you $50 off a brand new one…… number one no right to Repair number two fills up the landfill number three why would she invest in a year and a half-year-old machine again? I gave her a scan cut. This is the best machine she ever got…… Brother scan and cut is the only machine to have. It also scans so you can use every scrap even the smallest pieces. There’s no waste.

I feel like if someone was just starting today on trying to determine which machine is the best one they would be shocked that it takes 20 minutes to do that but I don't even know if 20 minutes is sufficient. company has like such a bizarre problem with how they promote their stuff. cricut it's just a fail from the outset for me because it's just a subscription trap and there's no reason for that. whatever price cut they have on the action machine itself is made up for in the fact that you have to subscribe to their bullshit. But then it's very confusing which is the better brand between the other two. no idea what brother is doing with any of its advertising or its tutorials like nothing answers any of the questions anyone is asking even in a video called what is the difference between the different models they don't ever tell you what the difference between the models is so just floored by how stupid it is it's just beyond. But the machine looks amazing and like the scanning feature is ridiculous. needs an entire model name for one that literally is no different except it's Disney is beyond me once again but oh well But then Cameo seems like basically the same thing minus the scanner. another conclusion I think I'm coming too you don't need a subscription for the latter too therefore they are better and brother gets you a scanner if you get the best model

  • @FamilyUnit

They each offer advantages and disadvantages. All have a paid version of their software but all can be used free with limited use. I did upgrade to Cricut Access and Silhouette Business Edition but never did with Brother. I like Silhouette's software because it's easy to save designs out as SVGs to use elsewhere. You can't do that with Brother and not easily with Cricut.

Would have been great to see a REAL comparison! Every time the guy mentioned a topic to compare, the woman was babbling about how great Cricut is. It is not! Cricut is an overpriced entry machine. Yeah we get that you got your first Cricut years ago... which hardly makes for a true and unbiased person to be comparing. Design Space is by far the most expensive and limiting software of the 3. Purchasing a design, you may or may not be able to access that design if you quit paying for the Access subscription...so effectively you are not actually purchasing a design, you are purchasing it to use WITH the subscription. Since Provocraft/Cricut went public last year, they have moved Customer Service totally to India and render the serial # inoperable if you call with an issue - even though they are not replacing the machine. Would have been nice to see an HONEST & unbiased, realistic review of the machines...this was another Cricut commercial & youTube is full of them! Not clever or funny...just same old, same old.

  • @FamilyUnit

Well aren't you a little ball of sunshine! Cricut is the most expensive and they appear to be moving the entire company to India but they are the most established and still the easiest for a beginner to learn due to the software and the sheer amount of instructional videos on KZread, including ours. We are not and never have been and never will be sponsored by Cricut. In reality, we have moved onto laser cutting and engraving and rarely do vinyl anymore. We look forward to your hours and countless thousands of dollars of investment and hours of education and research to compare these machines head to head to head. Betting that won't happen. In the meantime, keep your passive aggressive thoughts to yourself and find someone else to bully because we won't take it here.
