“But you did being me joy, such terrible, terrible joy” really shows you how much Pinocchio brought back a man who had lost his shining sun and all he could ever want is to bring it back one more time.

This definitely was the best remake of Pinocchio. Aesthetically beautiful and well written and wonderfully casted. Both original and nostalgic at the same time.

This movie ended up being my favorite Pinocchio adaptation, I love it so much. Literally the only things I would have loved to see is this movie having its own take on Honest John (fun and silly character in the OG Disney Pinocchio and even the Live Action version to some degree) and the climax (the Dogfish sea monster finale is still good, but I felt like the tension with the furious Monstro is just really hard to beat story climax-wise). Still, this movie is 100% amazing and easily is now within my Top 10 favorite movies of all time. 🌟

@@Sm4sher-Vader I think the character of the count was an amalgamation of honest John and Stromboli. But I agree I would’ve loved to see honest John and Stromboli as two distinct characters.

i think my favorite thing about this incarnation of the fairy (besides her impeccable design and tilda swinton’s vocal performance) is the implication that she herself is a child, or at least childish. like, she sees the ultimate consequences of her decision to give pinocchio life (which death chides her for and calls her a fool) and here she openly apologizes. she even does so childishly (“i only meant…”) the film doesn’t give her any real authority or try to justify her actions, nor does the character herself. until the cricket steps up, she believes she did the wrong thing and i think that humanizes her. i don’t know why but that detail makes the story feel more human too

Yes! This is a really good analysis! It also really works with the original book, since when Pinocchio first meets the Fairy, she's just a child like him, and their initial relationship is fraternal. It's with the Fairy's aging that Pinocchio realizes how he's gonna be a boy of wood forever, while everyone else in his life grows up and moves on. This is what inspires him to become human, and I always felt a bit sad that most adaptations don't show this. Here we also don't see tge Wood Sprite growing, but in comparison to her much more mature sister Death, we are reminded of her child-like nature!

@@cramerfloro5936 and your analysis led me to reconsider the scene in which she appears. though the cricket sees her true visage as ethereal and intimidating, he sees her many eyes as a curious nuisance. i think they way they peer down at pinocchio shows that childish impudence as well

@@cramerfloro5936Love this analysis, really illuminated this part of the story for me! I like to think we see her grow by learning to follow/respect the rules her sister chides her for ignoring. She initially gave Pinocchio life so he could replace Carlo in Geppetto’s life, but finally accepts that death means “real boys don’t come back”. Carlo could never be replaced, and after becoming a real boy to save his father, neither can Pinocchio. But by this point they’ve all grown to love him for who he is, not who he was meant to replace. By enforcing the deal they made, Cricket creates a rule she has to follow, and she sounds relieved to do so ^^

Yeah, you wanna know it’s really interesting. The guy who plays Geppetto is actually the guy who played our pissed off janitor from Harry Potter, Mr. filch, and finally one of our most villainous characters of Game of Thrones Lord Walder Frey. But I love this much better than watching that disgraceful live action remake. However, as for the cricket, I like the Jiminy cricket version in Puss in boots last wish, which was so much better.

Someone already said it, but I think Pinocchio's death here should've been his final one, as soon as the cricket used his wish to make him a real boy again. Thusly, as heartbreaking as it may seem, taking the final step of turning him into a real human being, at last understanding the "terribly joyful life" everyone he met was touched by.

was anyone else really distributed by the story changes in this movie. It was dark, dealing with abusive situations of fathers and sons, war, dictators, Hitler, sending children to war camp to fight for father land... I mean WTF, this thing went off the rails big time, and is being hailed as one of the best Pinocchio's ever ?? If I took my kids to see this in a theather I would walk out and demanded my money back. This was NOT a good movie, it completely went off the rails.
