  • @JohnTYoung

    Congrats Martin. It kinds=a comes down to Power / Traction / and Torque. It's really as simple as that. Power gets you peak horsepower so when you do your Dyno Shootout you can win it. 1 spreads it out a bit and 5 keeps it up high in the revs. Traction attempts so limit slip by comparing RPMs and Speed. Torque adjusts the power to pull and to pull down low.. I am almost always in 1 for the highway, 2 for slow technical, or 4 for when I'm riding in ADV mode loaded down with luggage. I have a handlebar mounted switch to go back and forth between 1 and another map. They do make a difference but it is not like night and day, in my experience. Map 1 is about the best overall map to just set and forget.

    The reason why the Vortex gets rid of the snappy throttle response because it is an entirely new computer for your bike. The stock ecu basically cuts off fuel injection when off throttle. So when you reapply throttle it snaps back do hard because it starts injecting fuel again. The bike basically shuts off if you will. Their reasoning... emissions, thsts it. They needed to pass emissions regulations and thats how they did it. The vortex ecu does not cut off fuel injection do its like the race models essentially where its smooth on and off throttle. Dynojet doesn't do this because you don't replace the computer as a whole, you just add a custom map for air/fuel mixture.

    John, why did you choose the CRF450L rather than the KTM 500 EXC? Both are capable of functioning as light dual sport platforms and the price difference is a wash (at least where I live) once you add the Tokyomods Vortex ECU and either a Yoshimura or FMF exhaust system to the Honda.

  • @JohnTYoung

    @JohnTYoung

    I believe Honda builds a longer lasting, better engineered bike. When Honda built this CRF450L they didn't just add some part to the X model. There are some subtle differences; like the steering angle tuned for a better street/high speed ride, heavy duty sub-frame, real headlight, etc. The KTM is still the king of Dual Purpose bikes in the dirt, but if the dirt is 300 miles away I think the Honda's road manors will make getting to the dirt an enjoyable part of the trip.

I"m not too concerned about having the fastest bike, I just want linear power delivery and for the bike not to stall when stopping or lugging along in 1st gear. 3) Basically, I guess what I am asking is what would you recommend as the bare bones modes to just make it a better (not necessarily faster) overall bike. There's always a DynoJet Power Commander V, but honestly, the Vortex is easily worth double the money of the PCV. As for running the Vortex with a stock pipe I don't know of anyone who's done it. There is surely someone out there, but they aren't talking. Besides, the Vortex / FMF-Yosh pipe setup cures everything that's iffy about this bike except the maintenance schedule. Vortex fixes stalling (other than this is a four stroke and you can not lug it like a 2 stroke), idle, 3rd gear stalling, choppy throttle, etc... Unless you own a dyno or are a professional tuner, 555. Even the pros using the L for races don't adjust the Vortex too far from baseline. But feel free to mess around with the settings, you can always turn them back.

    Hi John only just managed to ride the bike after a house move. Set on 5 5 5 and power map 4. Can’t notice a difference in power and it feels choked up still like it has more to give and isn’t being allowed! Everything on KZread shows it making a massive difference but bike is still struggling to go over 70mph and I’m 15 stone. Do you think I should put it on a dyno? Bike has covered 650miles. Thanks In advance!
