CRF450L Ride Review: Coming from a WR250R

Комедия

Video and review of my brand new 2019 CRF450L. I talk about what's great and what's not, and how it compares to my current bike, a 2012 WR250R.

If you're thinking about getting one of these, and especially if you're riding a WR250R or similar bike today, hopefully this video helps you decide.
UPDATE:
I posted a maintenance interval video as well, comparing the service intervals for the new CRF450L to other bikes in the segment:

You really need to spend 5 minutes every hour tweaking your suspension for your weight, area and terrain every hour of riding for the first week or two of riding. Back a flat head screwdriver and small hammer to adjust sag, and a little flat head for rebound and compression and just tweak it as you go. There’s ton of info on forums too. I PROMISE it will make you so much happier

Very thorough and comprehensive review. I’m sick I sold my plated XR650R. Owned it from 2002-2016. Never a hiccup. Rode it off road and set up as a sumo, probably put 20,000+ miles on it. Bullet proof. Was hoping the 2019 CRF450L might fill the hole in my garage but from what I’m reading and seeing online, I don’t think it’ll do. Very good and useful review.

I really appreciate the video I think you do a good job about comparing but something I wanted to bring to your mind that you never brought up was the possibility of the bike needing it’s break in period for everything to kind of work it’s way to perfection. I know my first bike was a Honda and the throttle felt the same so maybe after some break in that will smooth out. Regardless I’m still very interested in bike! Thanks for the video great review and content

Having a klr and a 450x this will be my future bike. Love both of my bikes but the klr is to heavy and the 450x, well here in CA almost imposible to plate and maintenance would be just to much. I can deal with what honda asís for the 450L, cause in return ill get what I want. I do a lot of Baja riding and this is the bike for it. Thank again, you really helped a lot.

My riding buddy just got a 2002 CRF450R that is plated in California. Someone told him the cut-off for a CA plate on the bike was 2004. The plate was on non-op and it had an expired green sticker. Getting the plate renewed was no problem but he did have to pay late penalties on the expired green sticker. He can put the green sticker on non-op when it comes up for renewal so he won't have to keep paying the unnecessary fee. The gear spacing is pretty close the to get much highway speed out of the "R." It seems to top out around 65 mph.

You can plate a green sticker bike in CA. A guy that works at the DMV told me that. I showed the VIN for a 2015 WR250F, he looked at it and said that I could plate it. I have no desire to do so because I only ride dirt now.

Nice Review! I was in R&D to buy a DRZ400, when they told me about the CRF450L. They said they had one on the loading dock waiting for pick-up I could look at. It was your bike! Later on that day I saw your video while researching the CRF450L and I recognized where you were riding and the pic of your bike for pick-up. Weird coincidence. After seeing yours I had to have one. I just bought mine last week (took some time to save) and love it. Thanks for the great reviews and it’s nice to see our local area. R&D told me I was CRF450L purchase #22.

Thanks for the balanced review, a relatively rare thing! Honda seems to be targeting KTM with this bike. Hence the low weight, high price, and racy maintenance regimen. The behavior of the engine at low throttle angles is surprising (for Honda) and unfortunate. But I'm 99% sure that the tuners will sort this (probably for $400 or so). BTW, your comparisons with the WR250R were particularly helpful in framing where this bike stands. Cheers.

Thanks for the video! This bike has received and is still receiving a load of negativity thrown it’s way. I love the look of this 450l and I was thinking of getting one but all the bad press scared me off. I ended up buying a used wr250x in mint shape and low mileage for $3500. However, I’m still really interested in the 450l primarily for the same reasons as yourself. I live in Canada (just outside Toronto) and plating an off road bike is impossible. I’d like a 450/500 that is street legal but my only options before were Ktm/husky/beta. The Honda really has me excited but all the mediocre reviews have been killing me! Lol. Hopefully this spring I’ll be able to catch a Honda ride day at one of the dealerships in my neck of the woods so I can test one out. If I’m satisfied with the power (that so many says is lacking) then I’ll reserve a 2020 model this fall as I’m thinking Honda will iron out some of the minor issues that you highlighted by then. Plus, some of the aftermarket options should be available by then including the uncorking aspect so we can get the real power out of it. Has your opinion of the bike changed since the making of this video?

I wound up with the new CRF250F. I looked, and rode one of these, and WOW, they are sweet...but, I'm almost 60 years old, and the 'recovery period' has really gotten stretched out from when I was a younger man. When I wreck, it takes a whole lot longer to get back in the saddle...so, if I had the power of this bike, there's a real good chance I'd get in way over my head. With that said...if/when I buy another dual sport, this will be on the short list. Great vid, thanks for the honest review.

Great review. If I didn’t already have a WR I’d most likely get the 450L but because of the jerky throttle and high price of the 450L I will keep my WR. The WR has the jerky throttle as well and that really sucks on an otherwise great ADV machine. People worry too much about the shorter maintenance interval on the 450L. Not many do RTW on these bikes. 🤓

Coming from a crf250L I really love this bike. I'm a very inexperienced rider with about 2300 miles under my belt. 40% off road. 60% on road. I do want to reduce the torque maybe a little larger rear sprocket. I have few problems with it though. Downshift revmatching it sometimes stalls out forcing me to hold the start button maybe causing a crash one day. And the smallest problem be stalling a few seconds after I start it for the first time of the day.other than that I really do enjoy this bike. I have about 250 miles on my crf450L

Going up in size on the rear sprocket is going to shift your power even more towards the bottom end. If you are wanting to lessen the low end and get a little more top end you'll want to go smaller on back or larger on front.

I’m a previous 2008 WR250R owner and I’ve just bought a 2023 CRF450RL, this video gave me some more confidence to ride my new bigger bike. I’m hoping Honda has done something to fix the off/on throttle and the stalling, I think the flame outs might be a thing of the past. Thanks for your informative video.

Thank you for the video. I had a crf250l that I liked but it was underpowered so then I bought a XR650L which is nice but bigger and much heavier. The 450 seems to fit the bill for me so I’m trying to sell my 650 to get into a 450. Your video was very helpful. Thank you.

Thanks for the review. I'm considering the bike. I also appreciate the overall on the other bikes. I was considering a drz. Have you rode a 650r or 650l? I know the 650l is a bit dated especially the suspension. They are affordable on the used market

Just glad that one of the Japanese bike companies finally brought out a modern good looking 450 streetable bike! I dont really agree with the price point, and the maintenance intervals. Those are the 2 main things that pushed me to KTM. But good review and awesome bike! Need more competition in order to keep this segment alive!

Great review and ride. I’ve been waiting for this bike to see what it’s all about since seeing the crf250l review. I have never rode a 250l but I’m a big guy like you haha and I think a 250 won’t do it for me. Basically I want this bike so I can ride to my off-road trails. I’m not a hardcore woods rider so the more lenient power and ride is perfect and the bike looks awesome and I’m sure it could last years. If I get 10 years out of this then the 11k price tag is ok by me. 1k a year for fun is great. I’m into atv riding too so I won’t be on the bike always but it’s sure nice to be able to jump on the road when you want to. Good review thanks 👍🍻🇨🇦

I know what you mean about the DRZ not feeling the best on rough single track trails like these, and I think that you're right about it just carrying the weight too high. I have a CRF250L, my brother a DRZ400S. They're around the same weight, but the CRF250L feels way lighter because the weight is down lower. Not to mention the DRZ doesn't have inverted front forks. It is still an amazing bike, but it is an old design. The 450L looks sweet too though.

And kudos to you for Not running intrusive pseudo-music soundtrack under your speaking. An exceptional video Audio. I have been considering this bike to replace both my '16 Ducati Hyperstrada and my '18 CRF250L Rally. Then I realized the CRF450L does not have ABS and has Short maintenance intervals as well as small tank and hard seat. Oh, well, Honda's bullet-proof XR650L could be The Sheet, especially with lighter exhaust and wheels. There are a bunch out there and I can modify the say to make it rideable.

I usually don't care for narrated videos. I'm actually not sure why I like this video. But I do. I stuck with you for a half hour, liked and subscribed. Weird ;). Thanks for the review, Man! It is a good one. I like your style. Do you still have your Yamaha? Is that true what people are posting, oil every 600 miles, and valve checks every 1800 on the Honda 450? Basically an HRC Rally motor by the sound of it. I have a few (well, loads, if I could afford them all) bikes on my radar. I am in Europe, so the KLR is a non existent/difficult option. So what is tickling my fancy are: CRF250L and modify it quite extensively. Husqvarna TE630 and modify it quite extensively. Or wait for the KTM 390 ADV and modify it perhaps a little less extensively. I know what everybody is thinking, and yes, I have considered that/those bike(s) as well, and yes I want those too). My needs are different from yours though. I do trips of 2 weeks or more a couple times year, across the continent. Anyways, thanks again for the good video/review.

Very thorough review, thank you very much! I'm still on my first bike (DRZ400SM), which I bought 10 months ago. For street it's great, highway is okay, and I can see how it wouldn't be ideal off road with the weight. The 450L appealed to me until I heard about maintenance. I don't know why Honda didn't just bore/stroke and program the 250L. I like the relatively low maintenance intervals of the DRZ. I think the best part of the 450L is that it may give a kick in the pants to Suzuki, Yamaha and Kawasaki to get a 450/500 fuel injected 6-speed dual sport out there. My one suggestion is to dial up your recording volume slightly. Other videos are much easier to hear at the same volume level that I have set. Nonetheless, great review! Hope you've found more joy in the bike in the last two weeks!

I also have WR250R and love it. At times, thinking that I have overgrown the bike. If I finally convince myself, I will probably get KTM 690 Enduro R just for the ABS option because I ride 80% city and 20% off road.
