I don’t understand how a bridge cleanup & rebuild could cost Billions of dollars. People are milking the system at every level.

Well, I’m sure everyone out there will be happy to hear your cost saving advice. No doubt you could do some volunteer diving or retrieve some of the hazardous cargo. Do you have experience with a cutting torch? In the dark? Under water?

It will be back up in a year. Its just a small part of the bridge. Order the steel beams and get a few big cranes to hold the beams as you bolt them together. Only problem I see is if you have to replace the concrete footing. Also you have lay concrete and asphalt on the driving surface, so that might delay a few months.

The whole bridge is collapsed with your thinking they can just go to Home Depot and Lowe’s in the morning and get some temporary day workers to build a new one

Pretty unlikely that they will build another truss bridge. It will likely be a cable stayed bridge. Given the I-35 bridge took just over a year to rebuild with its footings on land I would not expect to see this built in less time. Probably 1.5-3 years is reasonable. The channel will be open in a few weeks though.

There is no way that bridge will be rebuilt in 1 year. They will get that port open in a week or so. Just watched a new bridge over the Ohio be built on the upper. It took 3 years.

One big question, we all heard you on about, or when the Port and Harbour of Baltimore improved its facilities for Very Large and ultra Large international Commercial Shipping Vessels, plus exporting and importing companies too! However, the Port of Baltimore Authorities, or City Baltimore Transport Administration, or Local County Transport Administration, or the State of Maryland Transport Administration, let alone Federal Transport Administration of the US Government too. Actually carried out any upgrades and improvements, or modifications, or even installed, or look at installing these it seems? Any of the possible different Heavyweight and Fixed Marine Defensive Measures, for the protection of this near 50 year old and very important East Baltimore Road Toll Bridge? Which carries a major interstate Highway, which not only goes around Baltimore itself, though more importantly carries over 30,000 vehicles and many or most are freight lorries a day and night, that is 7 days a week and 52 weeks a year! Either travelling North or South along the Eastern Seaboard Interstate highway and road network of the USA too, why were not reinforced concrete dolphins installed? Or thick marine reinforced crash barriers built into the water channel bottom and coming metres out of the water with navigation warning lighting systems on etc? Or even the construction of major built-up rock islands, that is around the bridge foundations and bridge support piers or support columns too! Or rock breakwaters were built out form each shoreline, that is on either side of this bridge out to the Main Shipping Channel, both upstream and downstream too. With these rock and reinforced concrete breakwaters, then in-filled and making them into extended shoreline areas, which could be used for sightsee, sports and leisure use, or light business use too? Or just increasing the height of and grading a upward sloping bottom to the underwater shallow areas, by just using tonnes of dredged River and Channel Bottom Mud and Silt, then dumping this mud and silt plus grading upto in a sloping angle to the shorelines banks on either too That is on either side of the bridge itself, also on either side of the Main Shipping Channel to shoreline as well, in the process creating a giant shipping run-off grounding breaking areas, that runaway ships and vessels could run aground on and into! Sal and of these heavyweight fixed Marine Defensives Measures, would have prevented the collision totally in the first place. Or at worst situation reduce the force of this Large (10,000 to 15,000 TUE’s, or 20ft or 6m shipping containers carried) Container Ship, impact on the bridge to a what would have been survivable impact collision, or a major repairable collision amount of damage? Equally the the Port of Baltimore Authorities, or City Baltimore Transport Administration, or Local County Transport Administration, or the State of Maryland Transport Administration, let alone Federal Transport Administration of the US Government too. Could have put in place regulations and rules, all Large Commercial Shipping Vessels of between 25,000 to 50,000 Gross Tonnages must be escorted, towed and guided by a pair of tugboats, With at all time an One-Minute at most Alert Emergency Fast Response Fire Rescue Salvage Tugboat, is on standing by patrol (24-hours, 7-days a week, 52-weeks a year) either within the Port and Harbour area, or along the Main Shipping Channel or both that is at all times too! While ALL Large Commecial Shipping Vessels are either entering and leaving the Port and Harbour area of Baltimore, or travelling under all bridges crossing the Main Shipping Channel to and from Baltimore too! However with regards newer Very Large Commercial Shipping Vessels of between 50,000 to 100,000 Gross Tonnages, then they must be escorted, towed and guided by a pairs of tugboats ahead of the vessel’s and by a pairs of tugboats astern of the vessel’s, plus another tugboat of escorting in case of an emergency too. Lastly Ultra Large Commercial Shipping Vessels of between 100,000 to over 200,000 Gross Tonnages, then they must be escorted, towed and guided by a pairs of tugboats ahead of the vessel’s and by a pairs of tugboats astern of the vessel’s, plus another pair of escorting tugboats in case of an emergency too. In closing Sal, why is not the likes of NTSB or Federal Marine Transport Authorities in the past or now, or State and National Politicians in the past, or even now too? Not openly call for an Emergency Federal and State Reviews of the United States Marine Civilian and Naval Infrastructure be carried out As soon As Possible? Also how well they are United States Marine Civilian and Naval Infrastructure, actually defended around the USA, that is against all types of Natural or Manmade Marine Accidents or Disasters from happening. Let alone from attacks carried out, by International Terrorist Groups attacking Marine Civilian and Naval Infrastructure, or attacks from Enemy Rogue Nations on USA Marine Civilian and Naval Infrastructure too? Because of what has happen in Baltimore in the last few day, with the whole port and Harbour of Baltimore, plus the bridge and Interstate Highway now going to be closed down for weeks or months, even out of action for years to some degree. American and European Politicians and Transport Administration Officials alike, have to realise their joint overseas foreign enemies, will be taking very close interest. That is on what has happened in Baltimore, also how quick the US is to respond and bouncy back, plus how the US recovery’s from this Container Ship and Bridge Marine Accident and Disaster too. Is the Port up and running in less than 28 days or within a couple of months, with Commercial Shipping Vessels and Naval or Naval Auxiliary Vessels, allowed to leave port or enter port normally? Or will it be three to four or five or even six months, before Port is up and running normally at full capacity, or still only quarter or half and/or three-quarters capability too? Or Commercial Shipping Vessels and Naval or Naval Auxiliary Vessels, will not being using Baltimore Port and Harbour facilities that is normally? Actually until a NEW Road Toll Bridge is built and up and open to traffic, so re-linking the Eastern Seaboard Interstate Highway network, with the City and port of Baltimore too? Which could be 3 to 5 years you suggest Sal, could Baltimore be not up and working at 100 percent, until say the 2028 Presidential Election come round again? Especially depending, on if Trump and the Republican Party was return to the White House, instead of President Biden and the Democrats are Re-elected in November 2024, in just over eight months. Because it will be interesting to see what development happen in Baltimore, in the next 7 months how these may affect the US Presidential Election in November 2024. If President Biden and the Democrats can delivers on President Biden public promises to Baltimore, with Hundreds of Millions of Federal Aid Money, assistance, help and support. Especially from the USCG, US Navy and US Army Corps of Engineers, or will we all see Trump and his Republican Party supporters, plus very much Republican Party Politicians at City, County and State levels in Maryland plus on Captial Hill in Washington DC too. Trying to delay Baltimore receiving all these Hundreds of Millions of Federal Aid Money, plus Federal assistance, help and support coming from the USCG, US Navy and US Army Corps of Engineers too. As part of Trump and the Republican Re-Election Campaign, for Trump to be President in 2025, then afterwards Trump will deliver all this Hundreds or thousands of Millions of Federal Aid Money to Baltimore so Trump look good! Though When Trump was President, what did then President Trump or his Republican Administration, do about the protection of United States Marine Civilian and Naval Infrastructure around the USA, ANYTHING AT ALL?

There are already two of them across the Patapsco. Problem is that you can't carry hazmats through tunnels. With the bridge out, that cargo must be driven all the way around the city. That would still be an issue if they turned this into a third tunnel. Even with that, they still did consider digging a tunnel instead of a bridge in the 70's. The bridge ended up being considerably cheaper. They will almost certainly build a bridge that will be bigger, better, and more protected than the one that came down.
