Crews begin removing first pieces of collapsed Baltimore bridge

As crews continued the complicated and meticulous operation of removing the steel and concrete from the fallen Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, some near the site took time on Easter Sunday to reflect on the six workers presumed to have plunged to their deaths.
As cranes periodically swung into place and workers measured and cut the steel to prepare to lift sections of twisted steel, Rev. Ako Walker held a Mass in Spanish at Sacred Heart of Jesus, about 5 miles up the Patapsco River from the collapse.
“Yes we can rebuild a bridge, but we have to look at the way in which migrant workers are treated and how best we can improve their situation as they come to the United States of America,” Walker said of the men who were from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador and were patching potholes.
The bridge fell early Tuesday as the crew of the cargo ship Dali lost power and control. They called in a mayday, which allowed just enough time for police to stop vehicles from getting on the bridge, but not enough time to get a crew of eight workers off the structure.
Two workers survived, two bodies were found in a submerged pickup and four more men are presumed dead. Weather conditions and the tangled debris underwater have made it too dangerous for divers to search for their bodies.

More often than not, the most obvious answer is the correct one. This ship has crashed into things in the past, and you don't believe this could happen? Why would this "attack" happen at 1:30 in the morning? Why a small port like Baltimore, this will be cleaned up in a few weeks? Your problem is that you haven't even read a news story about it.

But if you're right and it wasn't a accident what would be the reason to take it down? At most it would hold up the ships for 2 or 3 weeks. I've been thinking about it and I'm at a loss as to why someone would want to take out the bridge. Any ideas?

Most ports have what are called ship pilots. The pilots board the ship and steer it into and out of the port. These are people who are familiar with the waterway. A pilot was on that ship and was steering it. The problem was that the ship lost power and without power the ability to steer it was lost.

Unfortunately, they might not ever be made to pay. I saw a video that talked about a law that was passed in 1859 that limits the liability of shipping companies to the cost of the ship and the cost of the cargo. In order to make them liable for more, the plaintiffs have to prove that the management of the shipping company knew of mechanical issues and did nothing about it. I saw several news reports that the shipping company has already filed a motion with the court to limit their liability. They already know the ship had mechanical issues. The questions are, was it something they had previous issues with and did management know about it and do nothing to try to fix it? From the video I saw it didn't sound like it was enough for the captain to know. It sounded like the company management would have to be negligent.

Two pilots, no tugboat. It was clearly a blackout during a critical phase of manoeuvring. How do you hold the captain accountable? If it was an American captain, the bridge would be the perpetrator. Actually, the most critical supports of the bridge were not protected against an occurrence like this. Typical negligence of the builders and American oversight committee. Never heard of HAZID of course, or Worst Case Scenario.
