Crewe Railway Station - 2nd April 2016

Paid a visit to Crewe to get various tours and other action going on in the day. The day was patchy, but steady in terms of action. Highlights of the day included the three Class 86's that made visits during the day. Below is what happened during the whole day:
- First time I have seen West Coast Railways since their ban was lifted. 57601 leads 57316 into Platform 12 whilst working 1Z49 London Euston to Fort William 'The Winter West Highland Statesman Day 1'. 57601 was originally intended to lead the tour out, but due to an unknown reason, 57316 is seen running around onto the front. It then left 23 minutes late.
- 45699 'Galatea' is seen arriving into Platform 12 working 5Z60 Carnforth Steamtown to Crewe.
- 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan' is seen arriving and departing Platform 6 working 1Z86 London Euston to Carlisle 'The Cumbrian Mountain Express'.
- Close-up details of 45699 Galatea in Platform 12.
- 37667 seen departing the UDL working 0Z37 Derby R.T.C. (Network Rail) to Crewe Gresty Bridge (Drs).
- 45699 Galatea moving into the Down Refuge Sidings, ready for the 1Z61 London Euston to Chester 'The Cathedrals Express' to arrive in Platform 12.
- West Coast Railways 47245/47580 arrive into Platform 12 working the 1Z61 London Euston to Chester 'The Cathedrals Express'.
- DB Cargo 66161/67030/90037 is seen departing Platform 10 working Arpley Sidings to Crewe T.M.D. (E).
- 45699 'Galatea' is seen heading onto the rear of 1Z61 London Euston to Chester 'The Cathedrals Express'.
- Colas Rail 60021 is seen passing Platform 1 working Carlisle N.Y. to Toton Centre.
- 45699 'Galatea' is seen departing Platform 12 working 1Z61 London Euston to Carlisle 'The Cathedrals Express'.
- 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan' is seen arriving into Crewe working 0Z87 Carnforth D&U.G.L. to Crewe. At the same time, 47245 is seen departing Platform 12 working 0Z63 to Chester.
- 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan' is seen in Platform 8 as it stables for the afternoon. Les Ross himself can also be seen.
- 86609 can also be seen in Platform 8 and departing working an internal move from Crewe Basford Hall to Crewe C.S.
- CS 86101 'Sir William A Stainer FRS' is seen arriving and departing Platform 12 working 1Z85 London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street Footex Charter.
- DRS 68009 'Titan' is seen arriving and departing Platform 7 working Wembley LMD to Crewe Gresty Bridge (Drs).
- 390 040 'Virgin Radio Star' is seen departing Platform 5 working 1H69 London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly.
- Freightliner 70005 passing unusually through Platform 6 working 4Z44 Daventry Int Rft Recep Fl to Coatbridge F.L.T. This normally passes through Basford Hall on a Saturday.
- GBRF 66703 leads Virgin Mk2 stock and a dead 86101 working 5Z87 Liverpool Lime Street to Crewe Down Refuge Sidings. In this, we see the locos swap places and 86101 running around its load. We then seeing it departing to the down refuge siding.
- West Coast Railways 47245 leads 47580 working the 1Z63 Chester to London Euston 'Cathedrals Express' return.

Great stuff there, it's almost like it's good ol' early 2000s with the 86s hauling MkI and MkII stock. Especially with '101 there with the Virgin mkIIs, in a similar fashion to when they did Birmingham to Glasgow runs...The rest is great. I didn't have as much luck as others have especially you here. I went back in February during the bustle of the G&SW diverts and there wasn't much rarities at all safe from the odd DRS 57 and an Arriva 67. I suppose the only major oddity was the GatEx 387/2 on test. Want to go back sometime if I can find a good advance deal again!

Thanks, this particular day was a great day for both heritage and current traction working together. Crewe is really hit and miss to be honest. Some days can be simply fantastic, other days can be crap to be honest. I'd pop Stafford in the future, much better for a full day.

Brilliant video; I didn't realise that 86s were still in use. The steam engine's silence reminds me of how annoying it is in old films when they chuff INTO a station!

Thanks, only a handful left for passenger working. The Freightliner ones are still in full force earning their keep.

"Galatea's" shed plate (Built Crewe 1936) says it all. Quality, style, longevity, Stanier, Crewe!

+Paul Cartlidge Yes, and since the end of January the ticket barriers are in use....you might be lucky some days when they leave the gates open, but were closed the last time I was in Crewe ten weeks ago.

+Paul Cartlidge Thanks Paul, as BlackCombeRunnerKarl says, barriers are installed and in use each day every day. Although early morning, late evening they may not be.

The railway station is the best part of Crewe, the town outside of it is a complete waste of space

Apart from the railway museum; I liked the demonstration signal box & Crewe was one of the first museums I remember visiting with hands-on exhibits. Good collection of diesel & electric locos but short of covered accommodation. If it wasn't for HS2 then the disused part of the station would make a good railway museum extension...
