Crete: Why is Food in Crete Island of Greece so Tasty and Healthy?

Food in Crete Island (Greece) is so fresh and varied that you'll want to try many traditional dishes before you leave this beautiful island. Its ancient roots are not forgotten here and food is still prepared as their ancestors did.
The land in Crete is extremely fertile and the locals prefer growing their own vegetables, animals and herbs. They use crop rotation and enrich the soil organically. Also, they refrain from feeding concentrated foods to their animals.
They love consuming everything fresh and rarely buy imported food. There are still many taverns, especially in the villages, passed from generation to generation, where tourists can try the original cooking style in Crete.
I was overwhelmed by the taste of this island's dishes, by the variety of both vegetarian and meat dishes and by the warmth of the people. I admire their respect for nature and old traditions!
It was Crete that inspired the researches to find out more about their diet, as Cretans are healthier and live longer lives. They discovered that the freshness of the products they consume, together with the varied types of foods they prepare, make Cretan food so healthy and beneficial.
These studies opened the way for the Mediterranean diet, which includes now dishes from all Mediterranean countries.
At the end of the video, there are some tips that I have for your first visit to Crete ;)
Enjoy your visit to this beautiful island! There are sooooo many amazing dishes to try and beautiful places to visit in Crete.

    Have now lived 6 years in Crete and it was the right move! When I asked a friend why his taverna has the best lamb I ever tasted, he pointed to the hills and said "Because the lamb grew up right over there!" Their sweets also are never "too sweet" but always perfectly understated, and they always bring a free bougatsa and fruit dessert with a few shots of raki (Cretan moonshine). Visit once and you'll be "homesick" for the rest of your life.

    What is the cost of living in Crete in dollars per month?

  • @37Dionysos

    @37Dionysos

    Жыл бұрын

    @@jonjr9 You need a Resident Permit which can take a year to apply for (plus show you can support yourself). That can run $500-1000/year. Sufficient health insurance is no more than $500/year. Live away from the city, eat simply, use public transpo, and $1500/month is living pretty well.

    Hello If you look at a map of Crete for a place called Agios Nikolaos, choose a village in that area and if you can afford a holiday first come and look at villages in that area. This is what we did, then went back home sold up and moved@@trekkietrek1774 Good Luck.

    For just an island, Crete has the most diverse and spectacular scenery anywhere, from white beaches, to crystal clear torquoise water, to rugged mountains and lush semi-tropical greenery. As for the food, well... forget gourmet chef food (and mediocre, tourist places along the beaches) and feast on what yaya and her family love to cook, a little more inland It's simply amazing, with the best olive oil and fruit in the world. It has everything: a rich history and culture all its own, unique scenery and character a-plenty. I love the place and will be back. Luckily I'm ony 100 minutes' flight away. Yassas!!!

    Hi, we go to Crete for the first time, after visiting other parts of Greece already. We want small studio, where I can do breakfast, but we want local tavernas. We have 4,5 years old boy. We will fly in and rent a car and probably move few times. We have around 3 weeks. I would appreciate to get tips for places far away from mass turism, where we will meet the local market, there will be some kids and kid friendly beach, something quiter .... Many thanks :) Tips for places to rent (especially close to the sea) are most welcome :)

    Traditional greek diet consisted of lamb, goat, pork, fish, cheese and other milk products, food was fried in lard and then little bit of veggies, seasonally.. olive oil has been used as a food item after second world war. If you really want to know what the greeks eat check Mary Ruddock's vids about Ikaria, real mediterranean diet

    We do not refer to ourselves "first as Cretans, and seconsly as Greeks". We refer to ourselves as proud to be Cretans amongst all the rest of Greeks. And that happens because we are the most traditional ones, the most authentic, the most vigilant, the most war-ready and we have a disproportionate history of struggles and triumphs (from successfully defending Constantinople even after the City had fallen to defeating the elite Nazi paratroopers in WWII) in the name of the nation.
