Today, I’m so excited to show you the historic mining town of Creede, Colorado! It’s located along the Silver Thread Scenic Byway in southwest Colorado. I’ve already posted videos about the Silver Thread Scenic Byway and the Creede Underground Mining Museum if you’re interested.
So, let me give you some brief history about the town itself…
From 1889 to 1893 the town of Creede bustled with mining fever. By 1892, Creede’s mines produced $1,000,000 worth of ore every month. In these few years, Creede gave birth to an independent, rambunctious culture. It was a strange mixture of bunco artists, saloon keepers, pickpockets, dance hall girls, professional gamblers - and even some church going families.
By 1893 the boom went bust. Passage of the Silver Act in 1893 caused silver prices to tumble from $1.29 per ounce to just $0.50 per ounce. Gradually, with a few more minor boom and bust cycles, Creede’s population declined to its present size.

Then, we’ve got the beautiful Creede Repertory Theatre. They have 230 seats and were founded in 1966. They’re a nationally recognized theatre who serves over 20,000 patrons during the summer season.

I wanted to talk a little bit about rock hounding in Creede. They actually do a Rock & Mineral Show the first weekend in August. In addition, on Saturday they host the Snowshoe Shuffle, which is a 5K run.
Just north of town, you can find some really great rocks. While I was there, I actually found a beautiful amethyst stone. Apparently, you can also find rare Sowbelly Agate, Amethyst, Turquoise, Galena, Pink Rhodonite, Native Silver, Copper, Pyrate, and many more minerals. Some of the minerals are good enough quality to turn into jewelry, while other rocks are large enough for lapidary purposes.

The Bachelor Loop Historic Tour is a 17-mile self-guided driving tour (down a gravel road) through the historic mining district above Creede. This tour takes you across mine locations from the 1890s and abandoned ghost towns that once rivaled Creede in size.
