You've made it to the motherboard with an EMP designed to take out all power sources within 1,000 miles, you keep making your way through the cybernetics knowing you will probably die trying. You make it to the center, a hub for all knowledge learned. You set up the EMP and get it ready for immediate detention, deep down you know that thi- You feel a sharp internal burning. Something has gone through your suit. You've been hit. There is nowhere to go. Nothing to do. The only thing you see is an endless hoard of humanities mistakes. It is the end. The only thing you can hope for, is that someone else succeeds where you failed.

@@AjTheChillGuy no? The last stand trope in games and movies is usually considered a "last stand" because of there being no logical hope of surviving, wether one character in a small army does or doesn't survive really doesn't matter in this sense since it's still a last stand.

This for me is the theme for a sympathetic boss, maybe the protagonist's best friend, that you have to kill not because they've gone evil or you have, but because it has to be done anyway. Like a curse/prophecy type situation, you both know they have to die but they're not going down without fighting tooth and nail first

Love how the first final boss remix is attributed to its literal meaning, the hero has beaten everyone except they still have to defeat themselves, and this one is now given an alternate meaning, the hero's mentor being the final challenge.
