    Disagree. Charge card and credit card will both require discipline to pay it off. You are acting as if the charge card will cost you tons of money if you don't pay it off on time. Per video - it only cost you a late fee in the $20 dollar range if you don't pay off your AMEX card.

    On my AMEX green, 5 years ago, I tested the limit on their website. The most I'd ever paid on a monthly bill was $2k. I tested $30k and it was approved. My credit score was 760 and my utilization was 9%. Income and assets (to be intentionally vague) each less than $200k.

    An interesting note. On the No Preset Spending Limit, I applied for a few cards last year, was carrying some high balances and my credit score dipped a bit. Around the holidays and I paid everything off shortly after however on my Gold Card, AMEX put a cap on my monthly limit at $2000. So I had a $2,000 spending limit on my Gold Card. I called to complain, they told me I could submit financial documents, which I did. They upped it to $25,000. So now I have a $25K SL on my Gold Card. Same functions, same points, same everything. I pay it in full each month. But I don't have to worry about that bizarre & mysterious "No Preset Spending Limit" crap, you really don't know what you can and can't purchase. That guessing game is ridiculous with the no preset spending limit, a spending limit on a charge card makes all the sense in the world and I'm glad I have it. Charge cards are awesome because it keeps you in check and it's nice to know I have a $25K limit on it. It also DOES NOT effect utilization on my credit reports. Win, win all around.

    I prefer credit cards over charge cards, honestly. If you have a high-income and good credit, you can have an insane credit limit. And this credit limit is pretty much there forever allowing you to spend as much as you want within that limit without worrying about your limit dropping. The way a charge card is structured forces you to spend and spend an average to keep your "spending limit" up. That's BS. I don't want my "spending limit" dropping because I'm not buying anything.

No matter what card I use I make sure I don't go more than 1200 a month and I pay every month in full. Will Amex lower my spending limits on my Gold Amex because I'm not a spender or charging a lot on the card?

    If you can only get a charge card from Amex, that adds a big inconvenience factor. A lot of businesses don't accept Amex. In my understanding, credit utilization is calculated by averaging the balance of every day of the month, so if you use the card to earn points and then pay it back within the day, it shouldn't impact credit utilization by much. Credit card companies give out credit like candy to kids, so the limit is kind of irrelevant. I don't know if this is the case with charge cards, but credit cards can also be topped up before hand and used like a debit card, so at the end of the day, it's the human factor that matters.

    If I don't pay a US credit card, after 1 one I only will have to pay 25% in interest? In Brazil is 360% per year (between 5% and 15% per month), that's why I use my credit cards like charge card, always paying in full and on time.

    Charge card because when you apply for credit you can only technically use 30% of the credit in order for it not to ding up your credit score versus a charge card that you will be responsible to pay each month because you will only spend as much as you can pay back in a matter of a month.

    I am wondering now. Don't you have private lines of credit in the US. We have them in Europe and the interest rate is a lot lower than what is charged on a credit card and they are normally free. So you can use them to work out liquidity problems instead of carrying an expensive balance on a credit card.

  • @gewalt8827

    @gewalt8827

    Yeah, I could have an open line of credit up to 5000€. 8.5% APR when I take out a loan from it and it costs nothing to keep open. In fact I'm probably gonna open it now that you made me think about it... Not to mention that even a regular personal loan only takes 48-72 hours to get approved by your bank here in Italy, so it's not really an issue. If I had a liquidity issue I'd just pay with my amex card and then catapult myself into my bank.

    Im not sure if that calculation is true for the spending limit, because the highest I have ever paid on my card is 2k, and yet I checked the other day (just for fun like you were warning about), and it would let me go all the way up to 125k

    Well like we said in the video, the way they calculate it isn’t public, perhaps there are other factors like income to consider for certain card members. But that has been the rough consensus amongst bloggers who write about credit cards.

    They affect your score equally if you pay on time every month. Only difference is with a credit card you can carry a balance. If the balance on your credit card exceeds 30% your score will start to drop. That won't happen with a charge card because you have to pay your charge card in full every month

    You can carry a balance. It's not like it's some sort of crime that you'll be prosecuted for. It's just that unlike with credit cards, if you're even a penny short, you'll get hit with a late payment fee and a late payment on your credit report as well as interest on the carried balance.

    Credit cards. If you have an emergency and can’t pay it in full one month then you are not under the gun. But should try to just pay them in full every month. Sometimes you even get the opportunity to get a 0% period and use the money for business or to take down another “good debt” balance down. There are many credit card useful strategies if you have the discipline. I have both.

    Question, was wondering I thought your credit score was calculated based on available credit and consumed credit. So it you have $10k available on credit cards but then spend $6k on a charge card does this not affect your credit score show you used 60% of your available credit? Or how does that work?

    great information this channel is awesome!👍👍👍 I was stunned when I was approved for my American Express Platinum Card late last year. Honestly, I'm considering downgrading As I don't seem to get any value out of the card itself. I don't travel very much and I failed to meet the minimum spend in the first 3 months. What does the great credit Shifu suggest?

    While I'm certainly not the Shifu, I do however have an 824 credit score and a decent grasp on cards. Most of the value you get from the Amex Platinum is from traveling... a lot. High point multipliers on travel, access to swanky airport lounges, incidental airline credits, etc. If you don't travel and/or spend a lot I would definitely downgrade to something like the new Gold card or even a card with no annual fee.

    Can you clarify something about the interest calculation on credit cards for me. I understand that if you pay off the entire balance each month there is no interest charged; however, I have read that if you make a partial payment, the interest charged for that billing period will be for the entire balance for that month and not the balance minus the amount paid. For example: There is a balance due of $ 1000 and a payment of $ 500 is made...leaving an unpaid balance of $ 500 on the card. However, when the bank calculates the interest due on the next statement, interest will be charged on $ 1000 for the entire period of the first month (despite $ 500 being paid) and calculate the interest on $ 500 for the next statement period until the balance is paid off? I hope I explained this correctly and is this the way banks calculate credit card interest payments?

  • @1126richardfan

    @1126richardfan

    6 жыл бұрын

    Credit card charge you interest based on the outstanding balance you have, let say $500 in your case. The interest calculation is on a daily basis, but not calculating once at the end of the month, as you say. So if you don't pay the outstanding balance off until month end, you will find the interest higher than the amount just calculated by ($500 x Monthly rate) because of the compound interest.
