Credit Cards 101: How to build your credit score ASAP and leverage your money

This is one of the most important videos I’ve made so far: how to get a credit card, why you should care, what factors increase your credit score, and how that can ultimately help make you money. I got my first credit card at 21 years old, after banks turned me down for a loan on real estate - this is from my experiences building my own credit.
Your credit score shows banks how responsible you are with your money. The scores range from about 300-850, with the best rates being available to those who have a score above 740. It shows banks how likely you are to potentially default on a loan and they adjust their interest rate according to their risk.
They calculate your credit score based off several factors:
-Length of credit history - the longer you’ve had it, the higher the score
-How much credit you have available to you - the more money you have available, the higher the score
-How much of it you actually use - the less money you use, the higher the score - this is called utilization rate
-On time payments - if you’ve never had a late payment and always pay on time, the higher the score
-The diversity of loans you’ve had - if you have variety of credit cards, auto loans, home loans, the higher your score.
-Total inquiries - this means that every time you apply for a loan or credit card, it’s marked. The more times you apply, the higher risk you’re seen, since people who apply for a lot of credit in a short amount of time might be desperate for money, so this temporarily lowers your score. But lets not worry about this since for most people just starting, it won’t make a difference.
Credit card misconceptions:
-You do NOT need to pay interest to increase your credit score. Pay it off in full, you do not need to keep a small balance each month.
-It does NOT hurt you to check your own credit score. I use CreditKarma regularly to keep track of my score and where it’s at.
-It’s also false that having too many cards will decrease your score - the opposite is true. The more credit you have available, generally your debt-to-credit ratio will be a lot lower, which will increase your score.
-Do NOT close out a credit card, especially if it’s an old account. When you close a credit card, it also closes all that credit history - which is a huge component of a good score. Keep your credit cards open even if you don’t use them, or if you pay an annual fee, see if they can downgrade the card to a free account.
-NOT all debt is bad. There can be good debt - like a mortgage, or an auto loan where your money is better off invested somewhere else - or bad debt, which is that expensive Hawaiian vacation for $7000 that you couldn’t afford but you did it anyway because you put it on a credit card. Debt is a great way to leverage your money and have it work for you, earning MORE money in your investments than you pay off in interest.
Now keep in mind, a credit card is something to use responsibly. Just put a normal amount on the cards each month as you would cash or a debit card, and pay it off in full. That’s it. It’s really, really simple. Eventually you can take advantage of great credit card rewards that’ll get you free trips and perks. Look up credit card churning for more information.

A good tip for just starting out with credit cards is to only buy gas with it. That’s what I did. It’s not like you can go and accidentally spend too much money on gas. You need gas, and you always buy what you need. You can’t really go over budget unless you decide to take a road trip.

I understand what you're getting at, but this kind of thinking is a bit flawed. Schools are supposed to teach you as much about the natural world as they can in a relatively short amount of time. Unfortunately, we've started looking at school like it's just a full time babysitter. If you don't know how to manage money, build credit, or do other basic life skills; the focus shouldn't be on blaming schools. It should be on asking your parents why they weren't helping to guide you along the way.

Just to clarify when Graham says a late payment will stay on your credit report for 7-10 years keep in mind this will happen once you are 30 days or more past due. If you make the payment before that 30th day you can save yourself from that 7-10 year blemish.

The best advice on buying a car is buy it in full with cash. That men and you can truly afford it. Also, a financed car will require full coverage insurance which can be triple what you’d pay for a fully paid off car.

It is important to keep in mind that AVERAGE length of credit affects your credit score a decent amount. That's why it is important to get a card early. But every time that you open a new card, you lower the average amount of time you've had a card. I'm currently struggling with that because I opened a card a few years ago (my first one), then a year later got another. That cut my average length in half. As you have more cards for longer it makes a smaller difference, but early on it hits hard.

Just want to say keep up the great content. You have a dope channel and you're not trying to sell bullshit $500 courses like some other people haha I respect that. I was In a similar situation. Started late on my credit. Parents didn't teach me about building credit, schools didn't teach it either. I gradually started building up credit by learning on my own. First with a secured debit card through my credit union, $300 limit. Then I started getting additional cards a year later and a few weeks ago just got approved for Chase Sapphire $17K limit to help with traveling. Another tip for everybody - you can raise your limit just by asking. I forgot what book I read this in but it worked. My income has increased, simply asked the company and they raised it from a 3K to a 7k spending limit. doesn't work all the time but always worth a shot.

  • @GrahamStephan

A few raised automatically without me asking (Bank of America, for instance). Some of them I've kept at the original limits (I still have a Wells Fargo card at $300). Others have been high limits from the get go, and a few I've had them re-run my report after a year to increase the credit line.

My pops started me early by giving me a credit card which he pays for(to pay for things like gas and food). Since the credit card has my name on it I've been racking up credit for the past 2 years and recently I was at an auto dealer cosigning my first car purchase and I found out my credit score was 750. I just turned 18 so this is something young people out there should consider talking to their parents about...

The key difference is that your father was KNOWLEDGEABLE, more than the average parent. Most don't even know how credit works. Many them are EXTREMELY lucky it didn't take much to buy a home or car back in the day. In today's day, if you're credit is fudged, you'll get screwed every way possible.

My mom did something like this for me. When i was younger she opened a mcu account for and started putting credit in my name and paying it off. Further down the line, at 19 I decided to apply for my first credit card and got approved. I found out the my credit score was 715 and the credit company gave me a $1250 limit. So parents start your kids credit history early and they will reap the benefits.

Hey, Graham, exceptional video, man! I'm curious what you feel would be a wise move for someone who did have credit cards and built average or even negative credit history on those accounts? Say after several years of owning multiple cards someone had a credit score in the 600s or lower... You mentioned closing an account gets rid of history as well... so should the account and history be kept? closed out and start fresh with all new cards and accounts? Or wait 7 years and do the best with the situation? Thanks for your insight, man. I realize between different outlets you get about 100+ questions a day. Plenty to tend to. I appreciate any perspective on this topic and thanks again for continuing to make videos and sharing what you've learned... It's not just informative... it's inspiring. I just began reading "Your Money or Your Life" today for the first time. Much love to you, man! -Zach

  • @GrahamStephan

    @GrahamStephan

    7 жыл бұрын

Hey Zach! I'd keep those accounts open since it adds to your average length of credit history. Closing them would still have the negative tradelines on the account, and ALSO reduce your credit history. Best way at that point would be to continue paying off the cards on time and eventually your score will begin to raise!

If you are paying in full monthly then pay on the due date since you are not being charged interest but if you have a balance pay it as soon as you can or as often as you can until it's paid off so you will be charged less interest.

I'm so sorry that happened to you, I hope your parents understand the gravity of the situation. This is why you never put something in your name if your parents can get it on their own (there's usually a good reason for that). It'll take time but yes, you can eventually fix it. Your late payments will stay with you but you can make the most out of it by continuing to pay your bills on time and working to satisfy any collections on your accounts.
