"An extraordinary piece of work indeed" - one can only agree with Mr Hermanus about that. Exceptional in all departments, and not a single weak link. Sets a standard far superior to any other period drama series, and compels the viewer to go back and back yet again to catch more details, and all within a true historical context and mood. So impressive that the production took time and trouble and actually toured England and Scotland for the authentic settings, and also took such great care with costume and set design. The detail is quite remarkable, from false noses to wired collars to horse's tack! A superb and brave script (reminiscent of Howard Barker) wonderful mood music, clever lighting in difficult conditions, and both horses and shirts I would happily take home! I am also deeply impressed with the casting: from youngsters at the start of their careers really making a mark with very little in the way of lines, especially the Villiers children, to some of the UK's finest character actors relishing and eating their lines, to the triumvirate heading the show. Tony Curran is an actor I have admired for a long time, and he is superb playing such a complex and volatile king, giving him an understandable psychology and making him relatable. Julianne Moore takes on a completely new type of character and hits both the mood and the English accent, from strategic vomiting to poisoning prunes. Toe curlingly good. For an actor who almost did not get his first and starring acting role because he was considered too good looking, Nicholas Galitzine may have been first considered to play George for his looks and charisma, but put all that away it's own box to prove his real worth as a skilled and subtle actor. I can't think of anyone else of his age (and appearance) who could have pulled off such an arc of character travel with such maturity subtlety and skill. Quite rightly, and finally, on the verge of super stardom. Not to mention charm, humour and diplomacy in an exhausting round of interviews both in thee UK and the USA. And another thing to mention; such a perfect plethora of behind the scenes clips which show the heart and hard work that went into making this series, where everyone involved pulled together with humour and skill, (often despite the weather and broken ankles) revealed inner workings and delighted everyone viewing them to prove that creating period drama is neither dull nor stuffy, but is a lot of hard work, attention to detail....but none of it works properly without good will, good hearts and a clear vision. Thank you everyone! You deserve all the kudos and awards going.
