Hi Anna! New subscriber, and I love your detailed explanations!! I am going to try making my own mix, but wondered how much of the worm castings you use. Am I correct in thinking that the 4 main ingredients would each be about 25%? And then the worm castings…more like a 5-10% addition to the mix? Thank you for your content! 😊

Thank you so much for your kind words! So for this average moisture mixture (good for most native flowers, veggies plants, etc) I'm breaking my soil blend down into a 75% well-draining mix that contains coco coir and sand - then a 25% mix containing garden soil and a few scoops of the worm castings. It's hard to give exact measurements because your mix will depend on ultimately how much soil you need. For reference in this video - that is a 20 gallon tote that was filled about halfway once my mix was complete. I used about 4 cups of the wiggle worm castings in that large mix. So overall the worm castings are a very small proportion! They hold onto a lot of moisture and are pretty heavy, so you don't want to overload your mix with them for seedlings. If you're adding worm castings to a raised garden bed or containers that will have larger plants in them, then you can use more! Worm castings are a fantastic fertilizer!

Why don't you use perlite or vermiculite for the seed mix?

I have used vermiculite in the past, but mostly on personal projects! Since we’re growing for our nursery, we try to keep costs down as much as we can. Coco coir and sand are excellent for drainage and we’re able to get our seedling to where they need to be before we upplant them! Perlite I’m not a huge fan of because the chunks are quite large for some of the more delicate seedlings we grow.

For the sake of simplicity, let's just say we'll measure in 'bags' of equal size. 75% of my mix is comprised of coco coir and sand, a little more coco coir than sand so let's say 4 bags of coco coir and 1 bag of sand, mixed with 1 bag of garden soil. The worm castings are the smallest part of this mixture, and a little bit goes a long ways! In a full batch I'd use maybe 2 handfuls. Your mixture will be primarily coco coir, with a little bit of sand and garden soil mixed in, then topped with a handful of worm castings. You want the end consistency to be very light and fluffy! If you feel like it ended up too dense, then add more coco coir.
